Fully outed myself as GC at woke workplace

McDuffy · 17/07/2020 19:36

It might be stupid in this job climate but I'm reasonably senior and I've just commented on someone's intranet post on why they've put pronouns in their bio and why it's a nice thing to do with a (softened, for me) counter argument (three, actually).
I'm feeling a bit trembly but courage calls to courage. I don't add much original thought here but I learn so much (though I'm good for a Times share token Grin) so thanks for making me feel I'm not alone.

OP posts:
Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/07/2020 13:20

What is the point? What do you think is bigoted about not believing in gender identity ideology?

SmudgeButt · 18/07/2020 13:21

Well I'm probably fully asleep rather than even slightly woke. I have no idea what the OP is really on about. I might assume GC is Gender Conscious? but how does someone use pronouns about themselves in any communication unless they are referring to themselves in third person?

RedtreesRedtrees · 18/07/2020 13:21

“ If they tried to sack a female employee for raising issues about shared changing rooms, or about collecting stats properly, they wouldn't have a leg to stand on and would lose the resulting employment tribunal.”

I’ve acknowledged that up thread Hmm

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/07/2020 13:23

I might assume GC is Gender Conscious?

Gender critical ie someone who thinks gender is imposed by society as sex based stereotypes rather than innate feelings.

BaronessSlighterThanThou · 18/07/2020 13:24

How would it not be? Any one idea that you are particularly offended by? That women have rights to organise politically as an oppressed sex class, maybe? Or that female health issues are important? Or is it just that forcing people to mouth sexist words that they don't believe to pretend that they think men are women is totes inclusive and you don't see why anyone wouldn't?

Great questions eresh but as redtears won't answer the simplest question (what is a woman) I think you have no chance with these.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/07/2020 13:24

So:

I am a woman because I am female, my female body is the reason why I am a woman

As opposed to:

I am a woman because I feel like I am one, it doesn't matter what biological sex I am, I define my gender

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/07/2020 13:26

Probably not, Baroness. They seem quite coy in revealing what they personally believe.

BaronessSlighterThanThou · 18/07/2020 13:27

Oh my, that's too many questions!

His little head will explode!

(And he won't answer any of them.)

BaronessSlighterThanThou · 18/07/2020 13:29

In the meantime I'd really like to thank the member here who recommended The Durrels a few weeks ago.

We enjoyed that very much, cheers!

DianasLasso · 18/07/2020 13:31

@RedtreesRedtrees

“ If they tried to sack a female employee for raising issues about shared changing rooms, or about collecting stats properly, they wouldn't have a leg to stand on and would lose the resulting employment tribunal.”

I’ve acknowledged that up thread Hmm

And I'm still Hmm and Shock at the thought of someone who claims to employ 300 people saying they don't give a flying fuck for employment law.

It's a bit like those threads we get sometimes where someone happily admits that at interview they drop all the women of childbearing age.

Amazing that employers don't just view women with such utter contempt, but actually feel supremely comfortable airing their utter contempt on a public forum largely run by and for women.

McDuffy · 18/07/2020 13:33

I've never been called a bigot before!

I got called a cunt once by one of my mates but that was for singing a One Direction song at Twickenham Grin

OP posts:
MitziK · 18/07/2020 13:36

I've had to complete some NHS surveys for research recently.

They specifically ask what sex you were at birth.

It's a useful way of being able to get some actual data, rather than garbage in relation to medical matters. Perhaps firms could stay accurate and accommodate the feelings of people who transition by asking that and a second question of how they identify?

RedtreesRedtrees · 18/07/2020 13:37

Dianaslasso, I very much care about employment law and we comply with it. This is not contradictory to anything I’ve said.

SophocIestheFox · 18/07/2020 13:39

@RedtreesRedtrees

“Good leaders want mixed teams, not clones who are afraid to voice their opinions.”

I heartily agree, but if you think it’s relevant to GC then you’ve missed the point.

How so?
RedtreesRedtrees · 18/07/2020 13:40

OP I’m surprised, but now you’ve “fully outed yourself as GC at ‘woke’ workplace” you’ll probably get called it quite a lot.

SophocIestheFox · 18/07/2020 13:41

I got called a cunt once by one of my mates but that was for singing a One Direction song at Twickenham

Now you’ve crossed a line Shock

ErrolTheDragon · 18/07/2020 13:42

I appreciate that you believe that GC is an acceptable position to hold, but on that we will have to disagree.

So this poster thinks imposing gender stereotypes is a good idea?Confused

Many of us would prefer not to work with misogynists, but that's just tough, isn't it?Hmm

McDuffy · 18/07/2020 13:43

@RedtreesRedtrees

OP I’m surprised, but now you’ve “fully outed yourself as GC at ‘woke’ workplace” you’ll probably get called it quite a lot.
It doesn't have much meaning any more. A bit like transphobe, it's just flung out in an attempt to deflect when someone wants to shut down debate because they've got nothing left but insults.
OP posts:
DianasLasso · 18/07/2020 13:45

Cambridge dictionary definition of the word "bigot": a person who has strong, unreasonable beliefs and who does not like other people who have different beliefs or a different way of life

Anyone else suffering from irony overload here?

DickKerrLadies · 18/07/2020 13:45

Bigot is one of those words that appears to have been redefined.

It used to mean someone who was intolerant of the opinions of others.

Now it means someone who's opinions one is intolerant of and who's opinions can be dismissed without even considering them.

DickKerrLadies · 18/07/2020 13:46

Cross post with Dianas Smile

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 18/07/2020 13:46

It's funny because a bigot is someone who is 'intolerant to those holding different opinions', which kind of covers everyone on all sides when we talk about gender doesn't it.
Pro-gender identity people are definitely bigoted against others who are critical of gender, as redtrees is clearly displaying here.
We're all bigots together, some common ground at last!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 18/07/2020 13:48

😄

RedtreesRedtrees · 18/07/2020 13:50

Diana the key word there being ‘unreasonable’ otherwise everyone who disliked, for example, racists would be bigoted Hmm.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 18/07/2020 13:51

But why are sex based rights unreasonable?
