MNHQ want money from us

Perhaps now is the time to tell MNHQ what we want from them.

eg
Relaxation of the anti-women censorship rules.
Reinstating banned respected posters like LangCleg.

Hmm remember Emily swanning off with our info and sharing it. Then bagging a, decent job
And all the GC comments being deleted from Web chats
And not being allowed to call males men
Worth paying for?

Dyrne · 08/04/2020 17:50

Oh shit. I was going to subscribe because I am grateful to have a female-majority place to talk; even if the moderation of FWR is heavy the fact that it exists at all is amazing.

But I hadn’t thought about the data risk - I absolutely do not want to hand over my real name to MN when there’s been a history of data breaches and doxxing.

tallah · 08/04/2020 17:52

Meow hahahahahahaha

Theflushedzebra · 08/04/2020 17:58

I'm a bit conflicted.

On the one hand, I'm still very bitter about the banning of longstanding Mumsnet FWR posters for such crimes as describing biological sex accurately, and refusal to pander to chosen pronouns.

On the other - without a doubt, Mumsnet is a unique, predominantly female, space on the internet, that has not only allowed discussion on the sex and gender/trans rights/women's rights topic, but has always stood against misogyny, and done some incredible campaigning work on women's issues.

I'm inclined to stand with Mumsnet in their hour of need Thanks

But yes, some reassurance on data security would be good... I'm very deliberately anonymous on here, uses an anonymous Protonmail email and so on. Mumsnet don't have any of personal details at present.

SarahTancredi · 08/04/2020 18:03

Do we get a refund if banned for being accurate about biology ?

SoldiersinPetticoats · 08/04/2020 18:07

I would if I still had a job...

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/04/2020 18:09

I've used Stripe. An organization that gave Emma the intern access to the information about users that she leaked and the ability to easily cut and paste it cannot be trusted to handle Stripe data appropriately on an organizational level in terms of who has access to that date, especially given that they've never addressed the many questions about what steps have been taken to avoid something similar happening again.

popehilarious · 08/04/2020 18:10

I wonder if a general 'please donate!' whipround might have worked instead? No linking to usernames, just a funding plea. Other forums do this and get the cash they need in hours - obv MN is a totally different kettle of fish (and there would definitely be whining about 'what's in it for me'!) I wonder how much they need?

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 08/04/2020 18:12

I’ve been a mumsnetter for too long.
Often surprised to be ‘banned’ for saying something deemed ‘nasty’ yet never ‘patted on the back’ when I say something nice. That in itself would be considered abuse towards a child. I definitely will not pay.

Nappyvalley15 · 08/04/2020 18:23

i agree with pp in that they should have gone for fundraising just to get them through the current year which is going to be tough. voluntary donations are a good idea for a site like this which for all its faults has been useful. it has hosted a discussion that no-one else would even though they have made mistakes with moderation and banning. mn is also a great support to women at all stages of life. we need it to continue. maybe if we don't want to be subscribers those who can afford it should send cheques. think about who gains if mn goes under. not women.

BolloxtoGender · 08/04/2020 18:25

I’m prepared to pay just to hang out in Feminist Chat.

MarieQueenofScots · 08/04/2020 18:27

I won’t be subscribing. The manner of the request is ridiculously tone deaf.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/04/2020 18:33

I'd be much more likely to contribute to a fundraiser as the security concerns would be minimal.

FannyCann · 08/04/2020 18:38

Where is the request? I haven't seen anything.

StrangerDaysAhoy · 08/04/2020 18:39

I agree I would pay towards a FWR fundraiser.

R0wantrees · 08/04/2020 18:43

Where is the request? I haven't seen anything.

I’ve paid (monthly option). I think MN has hosted a discussion that no one else would and has been invaluable for as a platform organising women to speak up for our rights. It hasn’t been perfect and they’ve fallen on the side of the abuser several times but they’ve gone out on a limb and taken an advertiser revenue hit in consequence, so I’m willing to have their back now they need it.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 08/04/2020 18:45

Re. data, I think Justine said in the thread that the subscription is handled through a third party anyway.

CheriLittlebottom · 08/04/2020 18:49

Ah ha ha ha ha.

Pay £50 a year to be told I have to call a person with a penis "her"? That a man's feelings about being a woman are more important than a) reality and b) my feelings about what it is to be a woman, despite my actually being a woman?

No fucking chance.

Michelleoftheresistance · 08/04/2020 18:56

I would like to stand by MN, it's given me a lot not least the education of meeting you lot here which would be worth it by itself. But yes, am very concerned about security of data considering the history of breaches and the complete lack of ethics involved with MRA political lobbies.

Would very happily donate, but am not prepared to share bank details. Sad

GCAcademic · 08/04/2020 19:08

Re. data, I think Justine said in the thread that the subscription is handled through a third party anyway.

Someone else on the thread, whose company uses Stripe, said that it was possible for her to see the data of customers who made payments through it.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/04/2020 19:14

Whoever has access to the corporate Stripe account can see - name, billing address, bank or credit card details, IP address. Which given what we know about MN data handling will no doubt be directly linked to usernname.

WombOfOnesOwn · 08/04/2020 19:29

I suppose if I thought I was some sort of Most Wanted person by the trans authorities, I would care more deeply about my data privacy. I have always operated under the assumption that if someone really wants to find out about my very boring life, they could. But I think if somehow thousands of our names were leaked, it'd look a lot like good old fashioned witch hunting, and cast a negative light on the side making private data public to a lot of people who were fence-sitting before.

I think the trans movement in general is losing steam and will soon become regarded as a bit of a quaint relic of the 2010s. People are ready to move on to the next thing, and many are lowkey embarrassed at what the movement has become, even if they feel like they have to be "right on" in public when called upon. The idea that we're public enemy #1 and should hide in the shadows to the point of not even using our credit information online lest we be hacked, is either paranoia or giving power to the people we oppose.

FloralBunting · 08/04/2020 19:36

I'll take that under advisement, Womb. I certainly have a livelihood to preserve and would rather wait until Maya's appeal to decide whether or not I feel confident about putting it further on the line by financially supporting a website that already banned women at the behest of TRAs.

I'm funny like that.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 08/04/2020 19:38

TBH I’ve locked down social media and had the police involved due to the death, rape, etc. threats but I’m just bored now. No one can sustain that level of concern. Anyone who has an ounce of nouse can find out where I live and work. If they were going to come for me, it would have happened by now.
