I am a long time lurker but infrequent poster here but I needed to bring this to everyone's attention.
I have found out that Mumsnet HQ have banned the fabulous LangCleg simply for repeatedly pointing out the repeated times coercive control has been used by the moderators to stop women talking.
I understand it started with a conversation when a post was deleted because she allegedly used a sweeping generalisation but they couldn't or wouldn't confirm the generalisation and when she challenged them they decided to ban her on the basis of previous comments.

So it now seems pointing out coercive control is now grounds for being banned, thus proving that coercive control is being used.

I for one would like @MumsnetHQ to provide an explanation here as this is really not on

(also taking bets on how long before the thread is deleted)

Great post @MrsToddsShortcut

Bloody Hell MNHQ have you lost your mind? LangCleg is one of the best, most knowledgeable posters on MN, which is why she has been targeted! AND YOU FELL FOR IT.
For fucks sake get a grip.

pombear · 21/01/2020 20:27

Just popping these back up at the head of the thread, for those who may be joining it later (thanks SciFi for links)

These are the people who are rejoicing in Lang's ban - a poster who championed safeguarding:-

Manipulative males taking joy in the silencing of women.

Yay! Go Mumsnet, go!

SwimmingCait · 21/01/2020 20:31

Delurking

I am so sad about this. If Lang's conduct warranted a ban, it is utterly impossible to navigate the guidelines safely with even the best intentions. I wish MNHQ could understand the HUGE frustration in not only being held to higher standards than for other areas of the site but being held to rules which are either ambiguous or unwritten. It prevents me from actively involving myself in the discussions because getting it wrong would mean I could not pop up every now and again to ask a question.

Until recently I have been a school governor and Lang's posts helped me to have a better understanding of safeguarding and to do a better job of asking the right questions to keep ALL the children in the school safer. It is a huge loss to me and no doubt to other people like me.

Angry men: we want this woman to shut up.

Mumsnet: okay, we'll ban her.

Datun · 21/01/2020 20:31

The lurkers were always as important as the ones who stuck their heads out against it. And the lurkers were always far more numerous than you realised.

Absolutely. I'm quite surprised at the number of women who have not even registered, but still read. Not everyone wants to talk, not everyone wants to comment.

It doesn't stop them thinking.

pombear · 21/01/2020 20:31

(For the benefit of the banhammer monitors - I was referring to no specific people in my last post!) Anyone who would like to report me for linking my comment 'manipulative males' to any singular person is, themselves, transphobic, for assuming I was talking about a specific person!

Slow clap for Dudesnet

RuffleCrow · 21/01/2020 20:34

Should we all just quit and find somewhere better to hang out? I'm mainly here out of habit anyway.

TheChampagneGalop · 21/01/2020 20:35

*Angry men: we want this woman to shut up.

Mumsnet: okay, we'll ban her.*

MN will never be able to appease them by banning members.

A reminder that there are angry men who aren't satisfied until all of MN has shut down. A reminder that Justine got swatted by MRAs.

Fuck me

This is ridiculous.

I wonder at what level of MNHQ this decision was taken.

DiscoJanet · 21/01/2020 20:38

Wtaf?! This is all really sinister.

pombear · 21/01/2020 20:38

No Ruffle that's exactly what RedHoodGirl would like you to do.

There are a lot of eyes on this forum.

That's why some people dislike it so much and are targeting posters left right and centre.

We'll keep on talking. Like hydra or gremlins, cut us off, and more appear Grin that's what infuriates them! And they don't understand that each drop of poison water they think they're dropping on us is just creating more!

www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/controlling-or-coercive-behaviour-intimate-or-family-relationship
Here in the US the Justice Department under Trump redefined Domestic Violence to remove coercive control and emotional abuse one year ago with predictable results.
Seeing the tactics of abusers used society wide in Canada, the US, and the UK, in an attempt to control women, Gays, Lesbians, and Bisexuals, has been reminding me lately that some people read the law as a how to rather than a warning that this may be what is being done to you.

Uncompromisingwoman · 21/01/2020 20:39

Very depressing to lose such an informed and wise poster. But - as so many others have said - her knowledge and expertise is why she was targeted by those desperate to stop women ensuring that children are kept safe. Sadly I think MNHQ have been played by these people.

Amongst so many powerful comments on this thread, the post by MrsToddsShortcut at 20:09:29 is worth reading again and again.

stillathing · 21/01/2020 20:39

5. We won’t allow aggressive or rude behaviour towards our moderation team

What constitutes aggressive & rude? I've never seen Lang be either. I'd describe her as succinct and persistent.

I have regular safeguarding training for my work. I am taught that I need to be able to question the management. I need to know how to raise concerns both to them and about them. Because if a person, status or group of people become above question, above suspicion, then that right there is a safeguarding risk.

I don't doubt MNHQ have a hard job. It's great they don't censor women as much as, say, twitter. But when an intelligent poster raises serious concerns, why take it personally? Why not engage?

DuchessEliza · 21/01/2020 20:40

@Mumsnet you should be ashamed of yourselves. You’ve banned a woman for speaking clearly about safeguarding. Because some people find that threatening.

You’re a business. Who do you think has greater control over household budgets, women who care about safeguarding, or the people who are gloating on Twitter about culling Lang? Who, ultimately, is going to matter more to your advertisers?

We need to stay here, because they want us to go. They’re panicking because the tide is turning.

pombear · 21/01/2020 20:41

Here you go...one Lang down, five more pop in the Mumsnet box. Soz JP!

Oh @mnhq look at the triumphant tweets celebrating her ban-

It seems like you are banning a poster to please a noisy minority who targeted her for her voice.

Please remember why we are here and what mumsnet is supposed to be...

DiscoJanet · 21/01/2020 20:42

Do all those people crowing on Twitter really think that censoring women people actually stops us thinking, considering, reasoning, and coming to our own conclusions about reality?
