Very pro the "woke" agenda and trans womens rights, whilst coercing indigenous females into having sterilisation
www.cbc.ca/radio/thecurrent/indigenous-women-kept-from-seeing-their-newborn-babies-until-agreeing-to-sterilization-says-lawyer-1.4902693

I'm properly shocked by this article. How can a civilised country even countenance this?

Rachel McKinnon.
Mixed sex prisons where they're having to hand out the morning after pill.
Shutting down women's rape crisis centres.
Shutting down lesbian book shops.
Anymore, anyone?
Canada couldn't really get much worse.

All of these things (and more) are happening in the US, Aus, UK, NZ, etc. to various degrees.

The native story is a big deal and deserves attention.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 27/11/2019 08:57

I don't think there's any context that would make the system bullying women into sterilization acceptable to me.

exLtEveDallas · 27/11/2019 08:57

start spouting falsehoods and lies on a public forum

What falsehoods and lies are there?

HulksPurplePanties · 27/11/2019 08:58

From what I understand, the coil and other contraception's, are suggested. Suggesting sterilization is only in extreme cases.

The men aren't usually the ones in the hospital giving birth, or the ones that come in contact with Child Services regularly. They've already fucked off, which is an entirely different issue.

HulksPurplePanties · 27/11/2019 08:59

What falsehoods and lies are there?

The Canada has a poor track record with women's rights.
The Pickton targeted First Nations Women.

HulksPurplePanties · 27/11/2019 09:04

For what it's worth, the only women I know who was suggested sterilization as an option pimped out her 2 year old son and had 3 children taken from her, all of whom were fetal heroin/crack/alcohol, and all of them severely abused.

She didn't do it and subsequently the children who followed were taken immediately at birth. She has never cleaned up...pretty sure she's dead now...

exLtEveDallas · 27/11/2019 09:06

I don’t think it is lies. In my opinion Canada does have a poor track record regarding women’s rights. That is not a lie. In its rush to give TRAs whatever they ask for, they have thrown women under the bus. Transpeople do deserve ‘rights’ - their own rights. Not the rights of women.

In a truly open and liberal world there would be a third service, a third space with associated rights. Everyone could be happy...and women wouldn’t be subjected to baseball bats and hockey sticks in trans colours being wielded to cause alarm.

Who is a bigot and how? Note that I haven’t called anyone any names but that a TRA cannot help themselves Smile

happydappy2 · 27/11/2019 09:16

There is one person on this thread being bizarrely aggressive....so will not engage with their posts.

OP this story is shocking, clearly no woman should be asked to agree to being sterilised whilst in labour.

Canada clearly has a problem with protecting women’s rights and supporting free speech.

Hmm Biscuit?

HulksPurplePanties · 27/11/2019 09:26

A Biscuit?

Well, I guess that shows exactly how much you actually care about the First Nations people.

breakfastpizza · 27/11/2019 09:27

Again - this is happening all over. The Canadian gov't does indeed deserve critique on this issue, but it's factually (and embarrassingly) incorrect to extrapolate from it that Canada 'has a poor track record on women's rights'.

BadgertheBodger · 27/11/2019 10:12

Does it somehow compute that Canada does not have a poor women’s rights record because other countries have worse women’s rights records? Is that what you’re arguing? I’m confused.

I am British and happy to call out my government, your government, space aliens, whoever. If they don’t do well with women’s rights, I’d like to understand the reasons.

BadgertheBodger · 27/11/2019 10:13

Oh, and then try and do something about it whether or not other people think I’m a bigot or whatever.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 27/11/2019 11:46

high levels of patriotism on this thread

twinned with weird levels of aggression

MockersFactCheckMN · 27/11/2019 12:14

The treatment of indiginous peoples everywhere is nothing to shout about.

Here is an Australian statue honouring the aboriginal women used for pearl-diving. Often very young, they were kept naked and made pregnant because it was thought this gave them a greater lung capacity.

There seems to be something very wrong in canada
midcenturylegs · 27/11/2019 12:30

Early white settlers (and tbh there are still so many horrible racists here/there) in Oz were awful. They sent Aborigines to islands (aka "leper colonies"). Kept people fenced up. Stole women's children. Disgusting. And all in very recent times. Women bore the worst of it, but I think this was more about colonialism / white supremacy.

MockersFactCheckMN · 27/11/2019 12:56

Australian Aboriginals were not counted in the census before 1971. They were sort of wildlife rather than population.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 27/11/2019 12:59

But yes, sorry Canadian patriots, it does look to me like Canada is gleefully shitting on women while congratulating itself on how progressive it is

WatchingTheMoon · 27/11/2019 13:06

Oh Canada is a mess. Every white Canadian I know goes on about how progressive it is while every Asian Canadian I know says very different.

Exactly the same with women's rights, it looks progressive but a lot of it is just bs.

Not saying the UK is much better, mind.

Inebriati · 27/11/2019 13:11

What the fuck am I seeing on this thread? There is a terrible problem for women's rights in Canada. Canada is not a feminist country.

First Nations women are poorer than any other group, more likely to be pushed into prostitution, and as a result more likely to lose their kids to child welfare.
They then get pushed into being sterilized.

Also, thousands of First Nations women have been murdered.

''The 1,200-page document reportedly blames the disproportionate violence faced by indigenous women on deep-rooted colonialism and state inaction.''
www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-48481958

'''And that’s bad news for women whose high rates of poverty remain unaddressed.
Women on their own are the poorest of the poor, especially women raising children in lone-parent families, who are almost five times more likely to be poor than those in two-parent families. Yet their plight has been virtually ignored by the policy-makers. ''

''The roots of women’s poverty can be found in the way they are treated when they are in paid employment, and the situation in which they find themselves if they are not. Women who work full-time year-round earn only 71% of the average earnings of men working full-time.''
www.policyalternatives.ca/publications/commentary/canadian-women-their-own-are-poorest-poor

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 27/11/2019 13:16

cases like that, it's not unusual for social services to suggest that the women be sterilized. It's the bullying that is unusual.

I want to be 100% clear that here in the UK this would be absolutely unacceptable behaviour from SS. Just FAOD.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 27/11/2019 13:19

And I don't think any of us would for a second suggest that the UK doesn't have issues with women's rights in general or with the way social services or the NHS treats women in particular, so it's very odd that the person quoted seems to think that social services habitually urging sterilization on women is no big deal unless they cross some specific line where it becomes too bullying.
