Yay to double the loos - cos queueing for the ladies in the interval is a right faff
But, what, no actual ladies loos? - NO ACTUAL WOMEN ONLY LOOS
twitter.com/oldvictheatre/status/1179336786537005057 - thread
"The Old Vic @oldvictheatre
Our loos now offer ‘self-selection’ rather than being labelled male or female. This takes a descriptive, rather than prescriptive, approach following advice from surveys conducted with focus groups."

Old Vic Loos
CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 04/10/2019 19:18

welcoming and comfortable for those who visit us, and that is fundamentally opposed to prejudice or intimidation. We are therefore incredibly appreciative of the wider comments on our new loos and have carefully listened to all viewpoints (before and since) to ensure that the right provision is offered.

it's always this weird sort of statement isn't it.
You can imagine all the places that have had Stonewall type training chanting this at once.

OrchidInTheSun · 04/10/2019 19:31

with opinion evenly split on this deeply personal topic

I'd be interested to see how many of the patrons actually were keen on the PYO toilet and how many were blue haired goldsmiths students who've never been the Old Vic in their lives.

The Old Vic has lied to all the women who donated, all the women who fronted their ad campaign and all their female customers.

Michelleoftheresistance · 04/10/2019 19:37

Evenly split?

oh well. only half the customers lost then.

The female half...

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 04/10/2019 20:06

Perhaps angry female patrons who contributed to the crowdfunder and are now feeling both cheated and ignored could show their disgruntlement by bringing bottles of urine with them on future visits to the Old Vic, to be emptied discretely in corridors and under seats at the end of performances.
Let the stench of stale urine be a fitting subliminal message for a theatre that treats two thirds of its customers with casual contempt.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 04/10/2019 20:07

The begging cap went out and very clearly asked for money for women’s loos. I wonder if they k ew then they were fibbing or if that came later?

Gingerkittykat · 04/10/2019 21:55

I listened to Jeremy Vine earlier and turned the air blue in the car.

What needs to happen is women need to start using the gender neutral with urinals. The men will soon start complaining about their privacy and dignity and the people listening to the complaints are more likely to take them seriously.

Ereshkigal · 04/10/2019 22:16

YY. And followed by:

Trans Women Are Women
Trans Men Are Men
Non Binary Is Valid

Waterl00 · 04/10/2019 22:37

We can all be liberal luvvie when the liberal luvvie mood takes us, however the point here is we are making A POINT. Which is:

Expecting women to accomodate cross dressing males is to impose sexual harrasment on us.

Which is: Not so liberal.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 05/10/2019 04:46

Opinion is "evenly split",eh.

First - I doubt it very much, all the polls I've seen are resolutely against.

But even if it was true that there's an even split: What is the predominant sex of those against? I suspect it is women, and thus, you have your answer as to whom this benefits.

BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail · 05/10/2019 08:53

Just heard this mentioned on Radcliffe and maconie on 6 music. Their music news reporter was doing an ‘isn’t it wonderful’ story about the Brit Awards scrapping gender (their word) categories. They took her to task pointing out that as the music industry is male dominated all this does it remove chances for women and many would see this as a retrograde step. The reporter got flummoxed and said that the Grammy’s had already done it and it’s about moderness etc. Then one of Radcliffe and maconie said yeah and the old Vic now has gender neutral toilets but some of them still have urinals and they both snorted.

So nice to hear it discussed, even briefly, on a mainstream channel (ie not the internet) and it not to be knee jerk progressiveness but to be the issues fairly pointed out.

It was about 8:40 this morning, give or take, if anyone wants to listen.

ethelredonagoodday · 05/10/2019 08:56

@BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail literally just started a post about RadMac discussing this! Interesting!

SunsetBeetch · 05/10/2019 09:26

This article and twitter exchange. Sheeeesh.

"The @oldvictheatre should be applauded for scrapping single-sex loos, says Amber Massie-Blomfield (@ambermb) – don’t let the Twitter storm compromise that decision t.co/qxJ57BSV8n t.co/1CvuWRlUzv

"I will be donating the fee for this article to @Genderintell."
twitter.com/ambermb/status/1180084632341090305?s=19

"I really appreciate this, but I also sincerely believe @TheStage should have asked a trans artist/worker/writer to write this article. There are so many brilliant trans ppl doing the work on the ground to make these changes and persisting over the years in unsupportive venues."
twitter.com/gillidactyl/status/1180212610924470274?s=19

"I’m sorry Griffyn I did think about this at the time and given v tight timelines decided to go ahead and write it, but I’ve been thinking about it today and I should have made more efforts to ‘pass the mike’. I will do so in future."
twitter.com/ambermb/status/1180232467577479168?s=19

(Some of the replies are funny though.)

SunsetBeetch · 05/10/2019 09:36

Oh and there's also this from the author:

"Amazing that @stonewalluk connected with me tonight to offer me support in negotiating the response to this toilet business... what a kind, thoughtful thing to do. Support them!"

twitter.com/ambermb/status/1180187105294725120?s=19

LangCleg · 05/10/2019 09:42

Dear Old Vic

Here's a poll on introducing gender neutral toilets from Talk Radio:

twitter.com/talkRADIO/status/1180132186302947329

As you'll see, even on Twitter where the Woke game everything, only 11% are in favour.

You are fuckwits.

Lang

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 05/10/2019 10:02

Just mentioned the urinals to a man... the penny dropped. Apparently men will run out screaming if women - and especially little girls - come in when they are using them. Duh.

Popchyk · 05/10/2019 10:02

"Amazing that @stonewalluk connected with me tonight to offer me support in negotiating the response to this toilet business... what a kind, thoughtful thing to do. Support them!"

You genuinely think that Stonewall is being kind and thoughtful to you, Amber?

Stonewall is manipulating you into doing their bidding (which is the promotion of men's sexual rights and the removal of women's rights). And you're grateful for it.

You honestly think they are helping you?

It demonstrates a staggering lack of basic intelligence.

HumberElla · 05/10/2019 10:15

Fucking Stonewall!?

So the new refurbished toilets were proposed specifically BECAUSE there was a need for more female provision. Women actors fundraised for it. The crowdfunder was framed around increasing provision specifically for women. Women funded them.

And Stonewall offer their support to OV when they scrap women’s toilets altogether!

Stonewall, you have pinned your flag to the mast very clearly. You are anti-women and will go out of your way to support those who exclude us. Even when it had nothing to do with you whatsoever.

Ereshkigal · 05/10/2019 10:21

You genuinely think that Stonewall is being kind and thoughtful to you, Amber?

Grin what a clueless fool.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 05/10/2019 11:15

Stonewall = men’s rights lobbyists (in bed with big business feeding them their woke cookies). Shame on them!

OddBoots · 05/10/2019 11:43

The first thing I like to do when having arrived at a theatre using London public transport it wash my hands, in future I will make a point of doing so in the section with urinals where signage says gender neutral.

MouthyHarpy · 05/10/2019 12:18

We need some brave soul in London to head out to The Old Vic and investigate for us

I think we need:
all women attending the Old Vic to use the lavatories with urinals, so that men get a better understanding of feeling invaded in a vulnerable situation.

Or,
women to make a complete boycott of attending the Old Vic. Given that the majority of theatre goers are women, they would start to feel it where it hurts - the Box Office.

And I say that as someone who works close to the industry.

MouthyHarpy · 05/10/2019 12:26

Which actress was lobbying for more ladies loos in theatres recently?

Frances Barber is a fantastic actor and very very vocal about women's rights and the incursions of MRAs/TRAs - at least on Twitter. Maybe someone could tag her (note to self: do it!)
