A Trans Woman Was Asked To Leave The Women's Changing Room At A PureGym

Exclusive: The woman was told that "no men are allowed" in the women's changing room after gym staff received a complaint from another member.

How long until the backlash forces a change in policy do you think?

I'll be perfectly honest, making everyone 'comfortable' isn't my basic motivating programming. I'm pretty meh about the comfort of quite a lot of people.

Being a feminist my main driver is the comfort of women. I'm such a gross old gynocentrist, I can't help it. All that conditioning to be kind and welcoming, and here I am on a feminist board, putting women's comfort first.

What the fuck is wrong with me?

KayM2 · 19/12/2018 23:43

Floral bunting; re your post above, which you seem to think shows I contradicted myself;

The quote from a post of mine that you re-posted refers to the fact that trans/transgender/ transsexual people, ie people who go in either direction, to male or to female, have always existed and will always be there, and in the other "spaces". I was including myself in that " we", as I am part of that broad group.

Personally, though, I have never used a female changing room or shower.(I have used the ladies loos for 20 years. )

I can see that it might appear that I am being inconsistent. It did not occur to me that the statement you quoted would be taken as an admission that I had used female changing rooms, etc. I havn't. I wouldn't use a female open changing room or shower even if I was able to use a gym, or sports facilities. I have a chronic back condition, and have had for 30 plus years. I can walk a mile or perhaps two, on a flat path, on a good day. No gyms for me.

I wish people would not look so hard for evidence of dishonesty that they think they detect it even when it is not there!

LangCleg · 19/12/2018 23:43

the differentiation between TS people as a transitioning, diagnosed and medicalised group versus a transgender ideology of self identity, acceptable sexual motivation

Who said there aren't distinct groups? This thread is about who women consented to being in their spaces and who they didn't. And who they consent to being in their spaces going forward. Women seem to be saying women only. So the distinction is irrelevant here. This is what you seem to be determined not to grasp.

MsMcWoodle · 19/12/2018 23:43

What vitriol? I don't care about your views though actually. I missed out on the niceness socialisation.
I just want an answer to my question.

Mxyzptlk · 19/12/2018 23:44

Women need to make it clear how uncomfortable they are with this TW stuff.

BeUpStanding · 19/12/2018 23:46

It was a while back now but just wanted to hi-five AAK for this valiant attempt to give well meaning advice:

This is as gently as I can put this...perhaps people who are a bit naive as to the various ways in which men prey on women may not be in the best position to comment on the safety concerns raised by making it easier for men to access women's spaces. Perhaps such a person might be well advised to talk less and listen more when women are discussing those concerns.

MsMcWoodle · 19/12/2018 23:46

My post was to someone upthread.

AngryAttackKittens · 19/12/2018 23:47

All that conditioning to be kind and welcoming, and here I am on a feminist board, putting women's comfort first.

Lovely, isn't it? It's funny to watch the flailing that happens when it slows starts to dawn on a male human that this particular woman/group of women is impervious to their various attempts at manipulating us into compliance.

cantgetridofthekids · 19/12/2018 23:47

How do you know they are not TS?

Granted it's an educated assumption but it's based on my experiences that people with gender dysphoria can't even bear to look at themselves let alone have anyone else see them. Additionally all the TS people I know would never want to change in an open area because the recognise it could make women uncomfortable.

The article reflects an attitude synonymous with modern ideology the "some women have penises, get over it" philosophy.

BeUpStanding · 19/12/2018 23:47

Oh, and yes I know all the words to FPOBA theme song Grin

Notmyrealname85 · 19/12/2018 23:47

amateur alert

Query - sex is biological and can have m/f and some intersex variants. Gender is a social construct.

Off topic, but does transgenderism not accidentally reinforce the gender binary then? If folks transition based on “feeling” a gender we’ve been taught?

cantgetridofthekids · 19/12/2018 23:48

Oh come on "manipulating" ? Not happening,

MsMcWoodle · 19/12/2018 23:50

Of to bed. Hoping that we have all this cleared up by the morning. Little reminder to people -
What do you want?

BeUpStanding · 19/12/2018 23:52

Notreal Yes, transgenderism absolutely and rigidly enforces societal gender norms. Whether it's accidental or not is another question. There are plenty of threads which discuss this, the Advanced Search function is pretty good.

This conversation on this thread is about single-sex spaces, specifically gym changing rooms. And Will Smith.

AlexanderHamilton · 19/12/2018 23:55

MsMc - I teach my son and my daughter to be considerate of peoples feelings and views but to have their own opinions. I hope I am a kind person and that I am raising kind children, male and female.

I’m not socially conditioned boy do I not let myself get walked over. I just think the world would be a better place with more empathy.

AngryAttackKittens · 20/12/2018 00:00

See you tomorrow, MsMc! Not that I hold out any hope of your getting an answer.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 20/12/2018 00:00

I’m not socially conditioned boy do I not let myself get walked over. I just think the world would be a better place with more empathy.

I can have all the empathy in the world, but it doesn't alter my need for sex segregation.

BubonicTheHedgehag · 20/12/2018 00:00

I don't want any male bodies in women's single-sex spaces. And lots of other women have said this too. Keep women's spaces dedicated to women only - exclusively the old-fashioned cunty type.

No to male bodies in women-only spaces.

No ifs or buts.

Just No.

AlexanderHamilton · 20/12/2018 00:01

I don’t think the transsexual contributors on the thread want to be in single sex spaces either do they?

cantgetridofthekids · 20/12/2018 00:03

*No to male bodies in women-only spaces.

No ifs or buts.*

Fact is and irrespective of yours or my opinion on the subject the EA 2010 says that in certain situations men are permitted to use women only spaces. Saying no requires section 7 of the EA to be repealed.

AngryAttackKittens · 20/12/2018 00:03

Nein. Non. Nyet. Multilingual MNers feel free to join in!

NewWomensMovement · 20/12/2018 00:12

Sex segregation and no compromise please.

The EA was sneaky - sold as streamlining but in fact taking away women's rights.

Gender is bullshit and meaningless and has no place in the word of the law.

BubonicTheHedgehag · 20/12/2018 00:17

Gender is bullshit and meaningless and has no place in the word of the law.

Yes, this. Agree totally.

cantgetridofthekids · 20/12/2018 00:22

The EA was sneaky - sold as streamlining but in fact taking away women's rights.
It's still law though! I think the biggest issue with the EA is that it was so loose in interpretation it's been able to be manipulated. It was written for ts people and gender reassignment not tg people and gender identity.

Gender is bullshit and meaningless and has no place in the word of the law.
When your sex and gender match it's an easy thing to say that gender is bullshit. However when by societies definition your gender does not match your sex then there is nothing bullshit about it. Gender Dysphoria is a significant life altering and debilitating condition that destroys lives. In a utopian future gender stereotype wouldn't exist and then gender would indeed be meaningless but right now gender stereotyping if anything is getting worse.
