This tweet is not going as well as she perhaps expected: twitter.com/sally_hines/status/1064473613049442304

I must admit I previously thought Leeds was a pretty prestigious institution

SophoclesTheFox · 20/11/2018 08:39

Dammit, I lost the twitter thread! I don't tweet, so as I was trying to save it for posterity, I consigned it to oblivion.

As feminists we’ve got to move away from a politics which is based around perceptions of realness

I'd say some people have been accelerating rapidly away from realness for quite some time, eh Sally Grin

Dragon3 · 20/11/2018 08:41

I think trans men are often ignored. They are not seen to be such a threat by feminism as trans women are.

And why would that be, Sally? Maybe because transmen pose no more threat to women than any other female?

Thank you again, Orchid.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 20/11/2018 08:43

Bloody modern academia.
If she has a million pound research grant she will be pretty much untouchable no matter how shonky her stuff. Meanwhile colleagues who do old fashioned stuff like rigorous thinking and using actual evidence but don't work in such trendy fields will be struggling to get money as gender bollocks will have eaten it all up.

Didn't know her dad was Barry Hines but it's not surprising as he was originally a teacher and lots of academics come from that background ime. If you want to work in higher education but aren't that clever, picking a woolly topic that is flavour-of-the-month is absolutely the way to go.

Datun · 20/11/2018 08:49

It's this way of talking that is so revealing. It's not about 'feminism not seeing them as such a threat', they're not such a threat.

They're just not. And as KS Says, it's borne out by statistics.

R0wantrees · 20/11/2018 09:03

I wonder if Sally Hines backed off from this.
My understanding of trans-ideology (especially within universities) is that is is considered that transmen have aquired privilege by being male and can be / are accused of transmisogyny if they assert their experience etc.

MsMcWoodle · 20/11/2018 09:21

The page seems to have gone. Has she deleted her tweet to get rid of it?

Bowlofbabelfish · 20/11/2018 09:30

Personally, I’m quite a fan of reality.

If you find reality difficult or upsetting, sally, then that’s very sad for you. But reality remains as it is and it’s you who has to adjust. Reality doesn’t give a fuck about our opinions.

fufulina · 20/11/2018 09:32

She has deleted the tweet! FFS. There were some cracking responses on there. Especially Jack Appleby.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 20/11/2018 09:37

J – yes well again, we’ve got to make this conversation relevant to our listeners and many of our listeners have had tough lives for one reason or another and that they may now – still – be facilitating the lives of others. Possibly they’ve done nothing but that for the last 50 years. And it’s hardly surprising that some of those women are feeling that their hard won rights are somewhat vulnerable at the moment Sally to the progress of some other – for example – transwomen.

This is the point at which I thought Jane Garvey was spitting feathers - her listeners are the ones who are indeed "faciliating the lives of others" - something I presume transwomen have never had to. The caring responsibilities, reproduction, the wifework - that's not their experience of womenhood, is it?

fufulina · 20/11/2018 09:38

OMG this. Yes.

TimeLady · 20/11/2018 09:39

Only three tweets on the WH page as far as I can see

faciliating the lives of others"

I wonder... if Jane Garvey is a mumsnetter and has read this thread...

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3082251-Men-whose-lives-are-facilitated-by-women-how-did-this-happen

When men are queing up to become carers for the elderly, having their careers torpedoed by going part time, and doing the bulk of the housework, drudgery and arse wiping I’ll believe they truly want to be women .

I absolutely adore that quote from JG. It gave me the feeling for the first time in years that Woman's Hour is listening to and speaking for us Thanks

That was awesome. She was seething.

Looks like she's deleted her original tweet: "Page does not exist"

BertrandRussell · 20/11/2018 09:51

I’m not very active on Twitter, but I got more likes than I have ever had before (still not very many) simply asking Hines what she wanted to say that she felt she didn’t get across.

Needmoresleep · 20/11/2018 09:52

No idea how to do screenshots. However as I was reading the whole twitter link with my jaw dropped, I found this rather shocking post just beyond the Womans Hour' comments. I dont know how Twitter works, as the same post did not appear on Anonytrace's account.

Perhaps you should take a long hard look at this bag of shit. She is Equality
Director at the GMC, the very person who will cover up anything that happens to
you as trans, including sexual assault , soon we will have mug shots of them all
and what they have done on the internet pic.twitter.com/x24qfAreEv

The link is to a picture of a woman, presumably the GMCs Equality Director.

The nine others, out of interest, though I assume they may not have asked to be tagged, are:

Twitter feels soooo different these days.

KatVonGulag · 20/11/2018 09:53

orchid thank you! A great read.

Here's the original Sally Hines tweet and my favourite response. All I got sorry. The overwhelming majority of responses were in a similar vein.

Worrying find there, Needmoresleep. Guilty of wrongthink, then, like so many others.

KatVonGulag · 20/11/2018 09:57

And talking of cowardly deletions. This rude person deleted this tweet solve screenshot so they could pretend they thought Jane Garvey was the te*f all along.
This is from the woman's hour twitter feed.

NotMeOhNo · 20/11/2018 10:09

God, she really is pushing the West=bad and East=enlightened feminist paradise isn't she?

BettyDuMonde · 20/11/2018 10:13

Damn. Missed it.

hackmum · 20/11/2018 10:16

Kat - it's kind of hilarious they thought it was Jenni Murray, as Jenni has such a distinctive voice. It's almost as if they've never listened to Woman's Hour before.

Also, as we all know - but presumably they don't - Jenni has been banned from hosting programmes on this particular issue.
