Oxford students going after Jenni Murray (again)

The History Society’s has invited her to talk on the topic of “Powerful British Women in History and Society”

The Student Union LGBTQ+ and the Womens Campaign (Sad) are calling for her to be no platformed for wrong-think and wrong-speak. She does not believe that transwomen are ‘real women'...and has "uncritically encouraged her readers to question whether trans women and girls should be allowed to use single-sex spaces such as changing rooms and bathrooms, whether trans girls should be allowed to join Girlguiding."

As we know from the Women Ask Questions survey 60% of the UK public agree with Murray, another 25% don't know and only 15% are on board the TWAW bus.

This presumably extends to most lecturers and guest speakers at Oxford . But they keep going after Jenni Murray Hmm.

Yes. I came across this thinking a few months ago and remember the exact feelings!

merrymouse · 08/11/2018 08:37

“actual trans people"

‘Actual’? Who are the trans people who aren’t actually trans people?

Don’t you need an A* English GCSE to go to Oxford?

LurkingWaspi · 08/11/2018 08:40

I keep thinking of adults abused in childhood, whom I have been involved with, and their various stories. Including being brought up in cults/sects.

This is the same stuff.

KatVonGulag · 08/11/2018 09:17

She is amazing. The twitter quote suits a purpose to make the TRAs look like the foolish cowardly dicks they truly are.
Shame on them.

I'm FUMIN

Ereshkigal · 08/11/2018 09:21

I love that first sentence - it just lets the crazy speak for itself.

Absolutely.

AbsintheFriends · 08/11/2018 09:23

On a lighter note, this must be the moment when a lot of mothers of Oxford TRAs finally lose sympathy for their little darlings.

Blue hair? Very nice dear. Being called 'they'? Whatever you say. Calling national treasure Dame Jenni Murray a dangerous T**F witch? JUST NO

PenguindreamsofDraco · 08/11/2018 09:35

I struggle to relate any part of this to my experience of Oxford in the 90s. We were either drunk, studying or having sex. My old tutor must be wincing at having to teach such a lot of mindless fools.

On the plus side, I have just ordered JM's book, which I would not otherwise have heard about, so cheers students.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/11/2018 09:38

Don’t you need an A* English GCSE to go to Oxford?

I wouldn't have thought so (certainly don't for some STEM subjects at Cambridge) . Though I doubt it's the students whose stars were more on the science side who are leading this idiocy in the main.

Worth remembering that the slideshow shown at NUS Women's 18 conference in a workshop run by two trans students was connected to MN intern Emma Healey and subsequent data breach.
The NUS officers were Eden Ladleye & Rowan Davies.
Davies (non-binary transwoman) was an Oxford post-grad and on the NUS Women's Committee also nominated Jess Bradley for Trans Officer.

During discussion about the slideshow on thread below, Davies appealed to cis friends, EH asserted that she would get her friends at MN to take it down.

Here's my favourite thing from the twitter thread linked to above.

MsBeaujangles · 08/11/2018 12:07

This is the story that has brought the crazy in to a work related Twitter account I manage. Before today, not a single trans story has surfaced and this one has prompted a wave of incredulity.
I do wonder how long they can hold on to their belief that it is a only a small, niche group of ageing women who take issue with the TRA agenda!

NeurotrashWarrior · 08/11/2018 12:24

I skim read this title yesterday and my sleep addled brain literally replaced Jenni Murray with Germaine Greer. Just had time to re read and am just so Shock and Angry that these students are so precious, entitled and silly.

But, reading this thread, I'm not so surprised it happened now. It feels like there's a small cohort of people driving this agenda across the universities.

LurkingWaspi · 08/11/2018 12:26

"She is amazing. The twitter quote suits a purpose to make the TRAs look like the foolish cowardly dicks they truly are. "
Righto! Got the picture now, thanks KatVonGulag

Rowan and all, you have me on a steep learning curve here. I'm doing my best to keep up. Grin

Nauticant That is brilliant!

Every hour is Woman's Hour on here, thanks MN Smile

BertrandRussell · 08/11/2018 13:27

And please can we stop retweetibg and praising the "hot chocolate and baked goods" line? Murray is an articulate , insightful, intelligent women with plenty to say. Not a bloody cake baking grandma.

Freespeecher · 08/11/2018 13:39

I like the hc & bc line as it shows how nuts things have got when they're going after someone as mainstream and comfortingly familiar as Jenny Murray.

“I like the hc & bc line as it shows how nuts things have got when they're going after someone as mainstream and comfortingly familiar as Jenny Murray.”

I know that was the intention, and it’s a good line. But Murray is a proper outspoken feminist- we shouldn’t diminish her.

LurkingWaspi · 08/11/2018 13:43

Dr. Christian,
No surprise there, similar agenda as Ade ££££££ and STATUS.

WomaninBoots · 08/11/2018 13:45

Dr Christian.

Smug bastard.

AbsintheFriends · 08/11/2018 13:54

I hate the way they're using her pulling out as some kind of evidence of guilt or shame on her part. In reality I'm sure she just doesn't want to spend her Saturday travelling to an event where she's going to be faced with tedious little gobshites in balaclavas shouting over her. She doesn't have to deal with that shit. She's a strong, superbly successful woman who doesn't need student union gigs to boost book sales - why would she go ahead with the engagement when the Q&A format means she's obviously not going to be allowed to speak about her book?

MoltenLasagne · 08/11/2018 14:03

Agree Absinthe - I wish she'd release a statement along the lines of "I have better things to do than deal with you load of shits. If the sensible ones amongst you are pissed off that those idiots have lost you an interesting speaker I suggest you handle it between yourselves."

hipsterfun · 08/11/2018 14:03

Sorry, cross posted Bertrand
I agree re the hot choc and baked goods.

As an older woman, I squirmed a bit on that one.
Jenni is an articulate, bold, and intelligent woman. I imagine she can be quite fearsome. Not a cuddly stereotype Gran. She doesn't sit there reading " A Book at Bedtime" to us over the wireless.

I agree, Bert and Waspi, it does feel ageist/sexist, and diminishing, cuddly-fying JM like that, though it probably wasn’t intended that way.

Someone I used to work with once worked with JM. Don’t mess, basically Wink

Destinysdaughter · 08/11/2018 14:08

Some great comments under that Times article, I especially liked this one:

I look forward to hearing that Oxford's Biology department has been shut down for acknowledging reality.
