Why is the feminism board fair game?

  • When asked what posters like about Mumsnet, they mention the fact that they don't like or hide the feminism board or say it should be removed, although that wasn't the question.
  • There are always threads asking how to hide a board, without fail many posters join to say yes I hate the feminism board too.
  • Posters make threads or post on existing threads telling us what we can/can't discuss on here.

There's lots I think that's pointless, boring or inane on MN but I just don't click on those threads or topics. I don't post on the threads and tell people how boring I think they are or that they should talk about something else.

Does it happen for any other board?

I think the reason this happens to the feminism board is that whilst Feminism encompasses a wide range of important women’s issues, a disproportionate number of threads is about transgenderism.

Add to that those threads are quite narrow minded - people who join them with an open mind (and questions) are often accused of being “trolls” or “goady”. (I guess you do get some goady folk on there so I understand the suspicion, but still! Not very nice for the people who are genuine). This really puts people off the Feminism board, I think.

Happens quite often for Baby Names.

AssassinatedBeauty · 02/10/2018 21:23

I don't get the need to broadcast how much they hate a particular section, sometimes even in that section towards particular posters. Just don't open the bloody threads, hide the section without announcing it, or post stuff that you'd rather be talking about. Why make such a bloody fuss about it?!

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 02/10/2018 21:23

there is something about FWR that makes some people very cross...

but i'm afraid i don;t know what it is

Serfisafleur · 02/10/2018 21:26

When asked directly by Mumsnet most posters actually use MN specifically for the feminism boards, rather than trying to hide it.

NopeNi · 02/10/2018 21:27

A lot of people don't like feminism, nothing new there.

They also don't like the uncomfortable tackling of self-ID either - questioning trans issues is a bit like heresy.

Even if you do engage on these things, if you come to Mumsnet for light relief after an exhausting day, you don't necessarily want those sorts of threads either.

JillyArmeeen · 02/10/2018 21:27

There was a thread in aibu yesterday asking how to hide a topic.
Feminism threads are showing up too much in active.
One poster said it was "so off-putting"
Ignorance is bliss I suppose.

7Days · 02/10/2018 21:28

I find it annoying too but I have seen it happen to other topics. Whenever there's a big flurry of activity on any board it can happen. The doghouse, the royals, Christmas when it's not Christmas are ones I can remember.

I still laugh when I think of a big drama about how all feminists are meanies and anyway we should all be equalists. (There was more to it than that but that was the gist from the non regulars.)

The Human Rights board was set up for all the passionate equalists - didn't seem to get a lot of traffic, it seems people prefer to carp about other people doing stuff wrong than do anything themselves.
So I take it all with a punch of salt.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 02/10/2018 21:28

Because we are incredibly subversive and dangerous Smile

NopeNi · 02/10/2018 21:28

When I was young, I thought it was expected to hate it all. I assumed men did and wanted to impress them, I put it down a lot.

I was sooooooo cool. Grin

Needmoresleep · 02/10/2018 21:29

You haven’t spent time on other boards! AIBU is brutal, and some of the educational ones are pretty much certain to make most people feel inferior.

In comparison, most people here seem constructive and intelligent.

VickyEadie · 02/10/2018 21:30

it does crack me up when some MN posters complain that there's 'too much trans stuff' on FWR. It's like complaining that a gay forum has 'too much about issues affecting gay people' on it.

If we don't oppose this dismantling of women's rights and the very definition of 'woman', there will be no FWR, mateys.

PositivelyPERF · 02/10/2018 21:32

Because some women are too internally misogynistic cool to be a feminist, so feel confused and threatened by feminists.

GoldenWonderwall · 02/10/2018 21:39

People have been moaning about the feminism boards since before self id was a twinkling in someone’s eye. Before then it was nasty feminists saying you can’t be a sahm or you can’t shave your legs or you can’t have sex with your husband. I believe before my time there was a load of shit went down targeting certain posters and people are still talking about it ten years later!

If I was being uncharitable I might think it’s because people don’t like clever women who don’t show appropriate deference. Perhaps it’s just some people are massively uninformed, who knows?

Molokonono · 02/10/2018 21:42

Some women just give no shits about other women and girls until it affects them I guess.

Who knew that rapists in female prisons would be such a 'first world problem'...

Oh hang on...

AyeRobot · 02/10/2018 21:43

I chuckle every other month or so, 7Days, about the tumbleweed on the Human Rights board. I think perhaps that the equalists were more interested in maintaining the status quo, which I'm sure is a surprise to many of us.

There's a lot to lose for many if they think about feministy stuff to much. Or perhaps feminists are mostly wrong. Or something.

Persifleur · 02/10/2018 21:52

BernardBlacks

I can't imagine what upsets them either.
Grin

HappyGowerGirl · 02/10/2018 21:55

@Molo that is total bullshit. Of course women getting raped in prisons is horrific, but ultimately women getting raped by transgender women in prison is a TINY proportion of all the injustices faced by women all over the world. Not saying it’s not important, but it is a TINY proportion. Yet about 75% of the threads in Feminism are about this.

Many mumsnetters who are also feminists no longer feel at home on the Feminism board because it no longer represents their views, and when they post on the board to discuss their views they are instantly dismissed as trolls/goady. The Feminism board does feminism a disservice by alienating women.

AssassinatedBeauty · 02/10/2018 21:56

When you start threads about more important feminist topics you're dismissed as goady, @HappyGowerGirl?

PipGoesPop · 02/10/2018 21:57

AIBU. Particularly the instamum threads.

The Doghouse or Pets Corner or whatever it is. Dogs are the bollocks and humans suck V dogs are cunts 4eva

AngryAttackKittens · 02/10/2018 21:58

Before then it was nasty feminists saying you can’t be a sahm or you can’t shave your legs or you can’t have sex with your husband.

The name of the site is "Mumsnet". How do they think the feminist mums got pregnant? I mean, a few will have used other means, but I'm guessing the majority got pregnant the old fashioned way.

Persifleur · 02/10/2018 21:58

/snark - I'm assuming BernardBlacks was posting in the same spirit but these days you just can't tell. I'm not on broadband atm so hard to check
Confused

AyeRobot · 02/10/2018 22:01

I would suggest that threads started from a feminist perspective on other topics have an almost zero chance of being dismissed as goady. Why would they be? Centering women is what we do!

As I always say, FWR is not a magazine, it's user generated content. Produce the content you want to talk about - the format is here for you to do just that.

GoldenWonderwall · 02/10/2018 22:05

I believe feminists become pregnant through sheer force of will. I feel very very sorry for their poor sons because they are being brought up by man haters who they will call them rapists before they even have their gender cruelly assigned at birth.

oatmealrats · 02/10/2018 22:09

Why wouldn't a movement and group of people who wish to destroy women's ability to define themselves as a class of females who are oppressed by males as class not be worth the amount of attention it gets here?

Feminism as anything meaningful is lost when males can become females overnight. If it was just a few random individuals pushing for this then it would probably be largely ignored, but instead they are a very well funded group who are actively pushing for legislation that forces us into the same legal category as men. Not to mention to regressive ideology of gender that goes against everything women fought for before us.

It is annoying that we have to spend so much time simply fighting for our right to legally define ourselves, but it must be done.
