I love this. Particularly her point about cognitive dissonance.

Good Lord this is spectacular. This woman is fearless and brilliant!

ChattyLion · 12/09/2018 18:33

If transwomen have a GRC, one is legally compelled to refer to them as a woman but because its illegal to ask if someone has a GRC or to see it, we are legally compelled either way. Yeah, something not right about that. If you want a blue badge (ie additional adjustments), you have to demonstrate that you have a disability & are entitled. I don’t see this as being any different.

Good point Boatyard and I agree with you.

I think this must be why at my workplace we have our completely unadapted female toilets being used by colleagues-with-male-bodies, who have identified themselves as eligible for the Ladies toilets and shower.

But such is the chilling effect that I have not challenged it with HR because I fear a bullying complaint given it it is already happening.

I just don’t think it’s fair or workable to legally offer anyone a special legal status when the new status can’t be validated or demonstrated by the person who gets the special status, to the people who need to accommodate it. Sad

I just wanted to say I loved the rant!

I’d love her to have a chat with Girl Guides.

Apropos of another thread this morning, I actually checked section 22 of the GRA, and I don't think you are legally compelled to refer to a transwoman as a woman. Repeatedly doing so for the purposes of upsetting them might count as harrassment, you certainly wouldn't be allowed to discriminate against them (and quite rightly too) in terms of employment (where that employment isn't eligible for a single sex exemption under the terms of the equality act).

But it would be perfectly legal to say "person ABC who was caught with his cock out on public transport/who has raped several women with his cock/ who has a history of defending violent pornography against women, is in fact a man, despite identifying as a woman ." Obviously I can't put names in place of ABC on this website, because it's against the rules of this particular website - but it is not illegal to say or write these things.

ScribblyGum · 12/09/2018 18:54

Amazing. Just watched the entire thing with dd1 (14) and had a good chat afterwards. Thank you Posie.

LadybirdsAreBirds · 12/09/2018 19:35

Back from my ban to say Brava Posie!

LadybirdsAreBirds · 12/09/2018 19:38

I think it's so shocking to realise how acquiescent to men most of us are. I only realised recently how ingrained was my desire to not upset them, to not make myself unpopular, and even to deep, deep, deep down, believe that they know better than me. No more. Absolutely no more

LadybirdsAreBirds · 12/09/2018 19:39

Soryr, many, not most women

PersistenceIsNotFutile · 12/09/2018 19:43

Glad to see you back in the fray, Lady.

LadybirdsAreBirds · 12/09/2018 19:45

Thank you. Have been stickering in the meantime

BabyItsAWildWorld · 12/09/2018 20:36

Great work Posie.
We all definitelty need to Not Care, and Stop Being Nice.

BeUpStanding · 12/09/2018 20:44

Am on p6, so apologies for harping back, but I have to respond to this:

I've been on MN about 13 years and hardly a week goes by without a thread about lazy SAHMs being no better than prostitutes.

What MN are you reading?! In the nine years I've been here I have never seen this, and I only took up residence in FWR about a year ago.

user1510568216 · 12/09/2018 20:47

That was EPIC!

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 12/09/2018 21:14

Back from my ban

christ, how many of us got banned last Tuesday?

nauticant · 12/09/2018 21:35

^^

Hahaha. That really made me smile.

AyeMrobot · 12/09/2018 21:41

That made the first phase of a cold a little easier at 4am today!

Clever woman, Posie. The criticisms here are missing the point that she is shifting the Overton window (she admits that!) by saying stuff because she can so that others can say stuff that's not quite so out there. So, thank you Posie. You're doing brilliantly.

HobNobcentral · 12/09/2018 21:52

Fucking brilliant!!!

bzzbeebzz · 12/09/2018 21:56

Surely we should just start using the men’s in these situations.

bzzbeebzz · 12/09/2018 21:56

Nothing will change until men start to feel the impact.

PerverseConverse · 12/09/2018 22:20

Why aren't we hearing about women saying they are men and wanting to use men's spaces? I'm new to this so may have missed all the stories, articles, threads about this but I can't remember ever reading anything saying that men must accept women who identify as men being in their toilets, changing rooms etc.

silentcrow · 12/09/2018 22:52

I am one of those precariously employed women who can't make waves in the way I'd like to. I would be the easiest person in the world to find an excuse to get rid of to ease the staff budget.

But there's still stuff I can do. I'm at the point now where I think I have to address my insufferable MP, and my union. I filled in the consultation. I made my own damn stickers even though I rarely get chance to use them - they're in my bag if I get chance. I booked a ticket for FiLiA. I've offered admin services to several of the women's groups and done work for them, and I've realised I have an expertise one of them is looking for, so I'll be offering that too. I've donated to fundraisers and charities that deserve it. I've sown seeds of GC to anyone I can, particularly my daughter, and I will challenge her school if necessary. And all the while I'm gathering arguments just in case this hell unleashes at work, so I can stand and be eloquent even if it costs me that job in the end. I can't poke that bear unless it pokes me first - but I can be doing lots of subversive work in the background. We can play that game just as well as TRAs, even without the money.

For those of you in the precarious boat with me, you can still do loads behind the scenes to support those who can speak. I salute and support those of who can raise your voices. We can do this together; we need both rabble-rousers Grin and whisperers.

Sorry if the clicky link doesn't work. I'm on an old iPad that only works when it feels like it.
The world is going mad. I fear for our children.

BeUpStanding · 12/09/2018 23:25

Posting on here counts for something too... If you lurk, come out of the shadows. The more women that post on here, the louder we are.

LoveCompost · 12/09/2018 23:31

Love the little voice she used when having a conversation with the handmaiden

Mum4MrA · 12/09/2018 23:52

Thank you Posie for your insight into this madness. You deserve to be back on mumsnet. Very inspirational 💐💐
