The Times reporting on the smear campaign against academics run by 'Natacha Kennedy' of Goldsmiths. Given how movingly women academics have written here about the fear and intimidation they experience working in universities, how good to see the source of the bullying exposed. share token:

And a brilliant article by Janice Turner about dangerous trans rapists in women's jails:

So pleased that I took out a subscription to the Times.

New sexual harassment claims at Goldsmiths spark calls for inquiry
University at heart of harassment scandal last year paid almost £200,000 to students who made complaints, research reveals

Goldsmiths, University of London, which was at the centre of a high-profile sexual harassment scandal last year, is under pressure to hold a full independent inquiry after it emerged that the institution is facing fresh allegations.

The new complaints have come to light as a result of Guardian investigations, which have also revealed that Goldsmiths paid £192,146 in compensation to students who have brought complaints of sexual harassment, assault or rape against members of staff in the last six years.

The university recently launched a 10-point sexual harassment strategy and announced the creation of a 12-month management post to improve the reporting and addressing of sexual harassment at Goldsmiths.

It wants to become an example of good practice in higher education, but critics say there needs first to be a root-and-branch investigation into the culture at the university to understand what went wrong.

The new allegations date back to the late 1980s and early 1990s and focus on staff in one department. One woman, who was in a vulnerable state following a family tragedy, described how as an undergraduate she was “groomed” by a member of staff with whom she subsequently had a brief relationship.

“What I needed was care and support but what I got was an unethical misuse of power and a very unhappy route straight into his bed,” she told the Guardian

"bed,” she told the Guardian.

“I’m disgusted by what he did to me, when I was so young and emotionally fragile, when I was so clearly traumatised, and under his care. It was a very distressing, confusing episode in my life.”

"I felt terribly sad to know it’s still a big issue and young women are still being subjected to such disgusting misuse of power, and sometimes criminal behaviour. If I hadn’t seen the articles I don’t think I would ever have spoken up about what happened to me at Goldsmiths,” she said.

What a...

... Coincidence....

Backlash against freshers' week chicken shop tour as students claim it is racist and 'exotifies local culture'

Student Che Scott-Heron Newton, the daughter of late American jazz poet Gil Scott-Heron, led the criticism, calling the chicken shop tour a “gross exotification of local working-class culture”.

“My main point is that I felt that a poorer area of London’s culture was being mocked by this tour,” she told The Daily Telegraph.

She said that she had complained to university staff about the event. In a letter to her lecturer, she wrote: “Today I became aware that the student union is offering 'chicken shop tours' and I can honestly say that this is one of the most pretentious messes that I have ever seen in my entire life.

Gosh this is ODD.

A reputation for sexism, classism and racism.

Who'd have thought.

All seemingly excused in the name of being woke.

Doesn’t seem to say the word ‘lesbian’ at all, yet they have three different trans officer positions.

Still, I’m sure Mx Pinafore will be championing the lesbian course as soon as Mx Pinafore enrols.

Goldsmith's Student Union Statement:

"Yesterday, Monday 10th September, a member of the LGBTQ+ Society with access to their Twitter account posted tweets containing offensive material. We condemn the abhorrent content of the tweets and they are in complete opposition to the views and values of the Students’ Union.

The Society have broken multiple Union policies and procedures, including failing to adhere to our code of conduct, and we have issued multiple requests for the group to delete the tweets. As such, the Society have been suspended and disaffiliated from the Students’ Union, pending investigation.

Societies are autonomous groups that operate with support of the Students’ Union, governed by our policies and procedures, but their views and behaviour is led by independent groups of students.

Following this, we will ensure that there is other support in place for LGBTQ+ students, including those starting at Goldsmiths later this month, by building networks and facilitating events led by our LGBTQ+ staff and students."

This is quite a long twitter thread, but well worth the read

twitter.com/CraigWorman/status/1039451486919553024?s=19

Student politics at Goldsmiths. A hopefully short and insightful thread.

I started the Liberal Society at Goldsmiths after realising there were far more people right of centre than I previously thought. I had never known some people in my classes believed in the same things.

These people had never mentioned what they believed in before out of fear of social rejection.

I hoped to provide a broad church society for anyone right of centre to debate and befriend other like minded people.

I had over 70 people sign up in freshers week.

With around 50 actual members signed up we started organising events. I found this to be extremely difficult as the you have to essentially proof your speaker will not offend people. This is at the discretion of the university who can reject anyone they want.

I started to understand why people had hidden their beliefs. I was branded a Nazi by people once my friends and our events were heckled.

I hosted an event with @bswud from @ASI at the time on bias in the Labour market. This event was attended by our 30 lib members and 7 people from the Palestinian soc and feminist soc who branded the talk, our members and the speaker racist due to comments made by AS in 1700's.

After the talk they heckled my members at the pub (which I had to host it at because we couldn't get a university room) and said that I was a Nazi, calling me out on social media.

These same girls went to all of my lecturers to demand I be prevent from speaking as it violated their safe space. Luckily I was surprised to be defended by some fantastic lecturers who were defenders of free speech. They pointed out that I merely held liberal values.

My society slowly died as young first years students, understandably, did not like being called Nazis and racists. For clarification, the society had people of all backgrounds, genders, faiths and ethnicity.

In sum, Goldsmiths students are rotten to the core. The student body is fashionably extremists and few have any real conviction in their beliefs. This is why I was not shocked by the news today. This is a genuine reflection of the opinions held by the wider student body.

The news today is symptomatic the Goldsmiths SU being run by self declared communists for over 4 years. It's sad but also not limited to Goldsmiths. Its all across the UoL.

On a side note, these people would harass me and my members at the pub and at parties. sadly, some first year members decided to leave the uni after being socially blacklisted and scared of talking in lectures.

Our members were classical liberals, believing in free movement, free trade and low taxes but these things make you a Nazi at Goldsmiths.
END

Sunset, well done to you. Even back in the 80s when we invited Thatcher ministers to our society at university there were large numbers of students trying to stop the talks going ahead. I want people at university including my twins who are current there (not at Goldsmiths) to express any views they want and be allowed to speak and that students should not be pushed into one "group think".

It is a similar issue to that you get in any groups including on MN and other places that there will be one view pushed and if you have a different one it becomes hard to express for fear of criticism or worse.

One reason I don't use twitter or facebook is one tiny comment can be held against you out of context and you can lose a career.

GayStar News article with quote from Claire Graham:
(extracts)
"That’s when intersex advocate and prolific Twitter user, @Mrkhtake2, whose real name is Claire Graham, stepped in. The Society had not included her on its list when she replied to it and received an unexpected response.

‘It was a bit tongue in cheek, but I replied to them saying “you sound a bit fascist”,’ Graham told Gay Star News. The Society quickly replied with: ‘Nah, we’ll just arrange to send you to the gulag.’ A smiley faced emoticon completed the tweet. (continues)

"It was unpleasant, it was the incredulity that they would argue against being labelled fascist,’ Graham said.

Graham argued their tweet ‘shows a mindset that’s problematic’."

"Graham said the Society’s ‘problematic’ views came at a time of intense national political debate about LGBTI people. The debate around gender self-recognition and proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act has put the community under great ‘scrutiny’.

‘It doesn’t do any of us any favors, it plays into fears and stereotypes that people have (of the LGBTI community),’ she said.

Furthermore, as an intersex advocate and someone with an intersex condition, Graham does not want groups like the Goldsmiths LGBTQ+ Society representing her.

‘In the LGBTI community, we (intersex people) don’t have a loud voice and I prefer it if I wasn’t represented by those opinions,’ she said."

‘I have trans friends who are horrified by what’s happening,’ she said.

@FlippinFumin

I wonder what would happen at Goldsmith's if a student wrote a gender critical paper? Would they be disiplined

I would not have passed my degree there, my whole dissertation was gender critical.

It is a serious question though, what about feminism? What about questioning the idea of patriarchy, surely this would be taught and criticised not only in feminism but in politics and the social sciences? Has the whole of the university gone mad? What on earth do they teach? Or is it only gender studies and you have to agree that anyone is a woman if they say they are and you are given a first?
