Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Vast Majority of Feminists & Trans

I was reading through Huda Elmi's, one of the JC9's blog today and her accompanying tweets. I can't link to it, as a new user.

She says in a tweet that the vast majority of feminists don't wish to exclude trans or erode their rights. Her implication is, I think that that the vast majority of feminists are cool with the impending GRA,

I'm going to be honest and say, I don't know the difference between a radical feminist and a common, all garden feminist. As far as I know, I am in the latter camp and don't see myself as being especially radical but I am not happy about the GRA.

Anyway the question I really want to ask is, is it true that the vast majority of feminists don't have concerns about the GRA? I am assuming, from her tweet that she means that if you aren't happy about the GRA, it then you must desire the erosion of trans rights? I was just wondering if there is any evidence that as a feminist, I am in the minority with my beliefs.

The stats are probably those from the public attitudes survey discussed in this thread and may not be reliable because it was a couple of years ago now (things move swiftly in these debates, such as they are), the wording of the questions may not have captured the full, stunning and brave range of trans identity and expression as we know it today, and it only asked about toilets and not about any of the much more difficult and contentious situations where women might find themselves in states of undress or otherwise vulnerable.

I don't know who Huda Elmi is or what JC9 is. I saw these stats discussed recently on Sky News as part of the programme in which they interviewed Jess Bradley, the national NUS trans officer who has been suspended over allegations she ran a a blog full of pictures of her exposing her penis in public and at work, as well as paedophile cartoons, school-themed exhibitionist porn and incest rape porn. Jess Bradley was invited to give oral evidence to Maria Miller's trans equality inquiry and is heavily referenced in the resulting report, so this news story caught my eye.

Trans allies really seem to like prick news, so here's their latest survey. They tried to spin it as an anti-tory story because only 13% of tory voters are in favour of self-ID, but only 18% are in favour across all political parties, showing this is a cross-party issue and that most of the population are not in favour of self-ID.

This thread is worth a look too, especially for lurkers.

The GRA is the gender recognition act. A law that past that enables people to change sex, legally. (Not biologically, as that is impossible).

The criteria is you must be over 18, have lived as the opposite sex for two years, and have a diagnosis of gender dysphoria.

You will then be given a GRC, a gender recognition certificate.

Currently there is a push to eliminate the criteria to make it purely an administrative process. Ie filling out a form on the Internet.

No diagnosis, no looking like the opposite sex.

(FYI there is no need to have any kind of medical treatment in order to qualify for a gender recognition certificate.)

I'd say that radical feminism is definitely more extreme from my observations.

If you are the kind of bloke that has to insult women, in particular a known feminist, of course women having an opinion will be 'extreme'.

thebewilderness · 05/08/2018 22:22

Most people including Feminists are opposed to Self ID.
Commercial feminists and MRAs who identify as feminists appear to be in favor because it has the potential to strip women of their rights depending on how the amend the badly written law.

Coincidentally I have read another thread just started on here that 72% of women are cool with shared spaces, so maybe this is where it is coming from.

Yes this is an amazing coincidence.

To OP. The vast majority of feminists in my experience are welcoming of trans people just like they are with other people in society or everyday life. The term radical/extreme feminist in my view is a slur to silence the voices who question the erosion of safe places for women and children such as safe shelters for domestic abuse victims and other areas that should be for women and young children ,. Especially now that the self ID hand grenade has been lobbed in. I'm trans but also have female relatives and like them I do worry about sex offenders and kinksters abusing this to get access to women in vulnerable positions. probably badly written but that's Sunday Rioja for you.

VickyEadie · 05/08/2018 22:33

Correct, CertainHalfDesertedStreets

I'm thinking of having a couple of Jaffa cakes...(I had a salad for my dinner and no carbs, which I sort of regret now).

littlbrowndog · 05/08/2018 22:34

😎 longtime

littlbrowndog · 05/08/2018 22:35

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 05/08/2018 22:36

I had a bagel with scrambled eggs and then I was still hungry so I had a cinnamon raisin bagel. I have, if anything, overdone the carbs somewhat...

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 05/08/2018 22:37

BUT. IME there is no such thing as 'a couple' of jaffa cakes.

littlbrowndog · 05/08/2018 22:37

Oh ffs stop,with the food

VickyEadie · 05/08/2018 22:38

It's all very well them saying you shouldn't eat carbs, but I'm feckin' starving now.

Jaffa cakes - my tip is keep them in the fridge as they're much nicer. Also - the best ones are from Aldi.

VickyEadie · 05/08/2018 22:39

BUT. IME there is no such thing as 'a couple' of jaffa cakes.

When I was travelling back to university (a long time ago) my mum always gave me a packet in my 'here's a bag of food otherwise you might starve to death' bag. I cheerfully scoffed the whole packet on the train.

CholloDeNombre · 05/08/2018 22:44

It's too late to eat
I've already brushed my teeth
I'll regret it in the morning

I would wager it is very true that the vast majority of feminists do not wish to erase trans peoples rights, nor exclude them. Why would they? Just fmeinists, by nature, will centre women and girls, rather than male people, so I udnerstand why it comes across as basiclly..saying no to male people and yes to female ones, is anti-trans.

I would love to know which rights 'terfs' are accsed of trying to erase, actually. A bit DARVO really as transactivists DO actually fight for the removal of rights of female people.

Self-ID appears to be a universally unpopular concept, surprisingly.
