Hmm Permission I think you might be.

I've seen Greer speak a few times.

She is uncompromising, she takes no prisoners.

But in a good way.

But maybe that's just old women.

R0wantrees · 09/06/2018 01:05

I'm not sure she is reactive. I watched a lecture she gave (thanks to someone sharing it here) she said she respected those who disagreed with her, & she was happy to listen to people who disagreed, what she objected to was not being heard.
It resonated... especially at the moment.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 09/06/2018 01:07

Oh dear, so funny, see how I deliberately failed to strike through there? (Seriously, how the fuck do you strike through?) Almost trying too hard to ‘look’ incompetent......

R0wantrees · 09/06/2018 01:10

Seems like a very cunning bluff (double bluff?) Judas

I've now had one more whisky than is good for me though!

PermissionToSpeakSir · 09/06/2018 01:16

Its been lovely chatting and I am turning in now. Have a lovely time at the sea Rowan.

Night.

R0wantrees · 09/06/2018 01:18

Thank you, I will for sure. Going to head for bed too,

ILikeyourHairyHands · 09/06/2018 01:23

I am still here.

Despite the stormy seas.

R0wantrees · 09/06/2018 01:25

There's a need, I think, to listen better to 'old women' ILike?

BettyFloop · 09/06/2018 01:37

I've just got in...am I on my own here now?

PermissionToSpeakSir · 09/06/2018 01:49

Sorry - in bed now and took a peek as I plugged my phone in.

I agree about listening to older women. I love Greer's take no prisoners position, but I disagree with her when she is being judgemental in areas she hasn't thought through or doesnt know much about- eg - arguing it's time for everything to be unisex as though wanting single sex space is immature or old fashioned. It's pretty dismissive. But perhaps thats just her way - taking a strong position, hoping to be contradicted robustly so she can form a more nuanced opinion.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 09/06/2018 01:59

Well yes.

There is a thing about not being listened to, because you are older

I don't know much, but I know that nuance and actual life is how it is.

PermissionToSpeakSir · 09/06/2018 02:11

I think society is really in the shit because of not listening to older people (not just older women- but of course their silencing is off the scale).

I was chatting about it with my mum today. Everything is becoming poor quality shit because deep, practical knowledge isn't valued.

It's natural for young people to think they know it all, but it is unnatural for this to not be counter-balanced by experienced older people correcting/taking the piss out of them. The media balance it tipped way too far over to the young.

LighthouseSouth · 09/06/2018 11:40

It's 1130 and I haven't done anything I'm meant to do
Can someone please yell at me to stop procrastinating?

PermissionToSpeakSir · 09/06/2018 11:58

Stop procrastinating fgs!

(Feels a bit rich me saying that if you knew the state of me right now but hth!)

LighthouseSouth · 09/06/2018 13:08

Thank you Permission
90 mins done
20 min break now
That thing about only listening to the young....I remember hearing that when I was in my 20s.
I see there's a programme about GG tonight on bbc2. I didn't know she was going down the "everything unisex" road either. Depressing.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 09/06/2018 13:28

Oh dear, so funny, see how I deliberately failed to strike through there? (Seriously, how the fuck do you strike through?) Almost trying too hard to ‘look’ incompetent……

I wonder if it's some peculiar initiation ceremony but it's terribly isolating and I'm of that geek profession.

RE GG - I suppose I will have make the time to listen to the hour talk she gave at Hay - I get what she's saying but in that, she seems to dismiss and minimise the very real harm women experience - that literally takes their lives away. It's great if women can get on with their lives and learn to live with the injustice - however many can't.

I don't believe the justice system is fit for purpose so no point in trying to prosecute, however we should be pressing for a new justice process for crimes against women and children.

Snowball please (just joking).
Glass of Sancerre...

My neighbour left a bottle of rose on my doorstep as a gift after I helped her get a pigeon out if her flat. She was in a right flap.

I may crack it open soon as I'm supposed to be writing 30 reports.

LighthouseSouth · 09/06/2018 14:55

More work done
Snowball, have to look that up. Only know Del Trotter liked them.
We had a pigeon, it seemed very relaxed but was oblivious to the wide open window behind it.
I know I shouldn't judge by the comments of others but the more I hear about GG the more worried I am.

School reports after some booze Grin does that make every pupil fabulous?

Waddlelikeapenguin · 09/06/2018 17:35

PermissionToSpeakSir yes! I have been struggling to articulate why i find SM so dangerous for society but it's the lack of older generations that is key. Will this resolve when we're the oldest generation or is this point in history too rapidly advancing & it will be something else by then?

Much earlier someone wrote about GG as academic rather than activist & i think that's a big part of it. I still love her though!

Pigeons are on my no fly list as they like the clover when the grass gets long, poo copiously & then the kids walk in it in bare feet. Blurrgghhh.

So much thunder here it's making me very happy Smile

ISaySteadyOn · 10/06/2018 08:57

Just propping up my place at the bar. Don't mind me.

LighthouseSouth · 10/06/2018 12:42

@ISaySteadyOn

you propping up the bar at 8.57 reminds me of a trip to Vegas years ago
Grin

I remember a nice lady from the plane, we were chatting to her and she said she her plan was to hit the casino at 3 every day and we had no idea if that meant 3 in the morning or 3 at night.

the couple next door had a blazing row at dawn because they'd apparently won $7000 and the guy wanted to carry on so they lost most of it.

ISaySteadyOn · 10/06/2018 13:16

It's coffee in this mug, honest guv. Wink

LighthouseSouth · 10/06/2018 13:50

@ISaySteadyOn

I wouldn't mind if it wasn't coffee Grin

womanformallyknownaswoman · 10/06/2018 14:10

ok, I listened to GG for an hour at Hay - her problem analysis was fine - her proposed solutions sucked. And she couldn't justify them to the interviewer. My take is she judges every woman's rape experience on her own, which she hasn't debriefed in therapy by her account, as she's still unclear what happened. She defended what sounded like an abusive wedding telegram of her father's (6 more penetrations needed to secure the contract) and she seemed to be more concerned with defending the perpetrators than the victims of rape.

Very, very disappointing and frankly unwarranted and uninformed. She victim blamed by accusing women of supporting the "playing the victim" narrative and being scared of the penis. -It illustrated her lack of empathy and her entitlement to think she has the credentials to represent what rape victims need from the justice system.

LighthouseSouth · 10/06/2018 14:12

"6 more penetrations needed to secure the contract"

please could you explain what this means? I don't know what GG said at Hay.
