A friendly place for feminist or general chit chat. Welcome all!

Smokey fire, smokey whisky and being able to chat freely and put the world to rights.

PermissionToSpeakSir · 09/06/2018 00:01

Yes indeed - does the Bluestocking have a beer garden?

R0wantrees · 09/06/2018 00:02

It's my first time here... not sure.
I like being outside with a whisky.

PermissionToSpeakSir · 09/06/2018 00:03

I've been feeling a bit like that myself today - normally I am happy with my own thoughts but I am in the mood for campfire, company and convo...

R0wantrees · 09/06/2018 00:05

Sometimes being inside all day can feel very restictive. Outside with space, good company, conversation and whisky is an excellent combination (happy for others to drink their preferred tipple of course)

Waddlelikeapenguin · 09/06/2018 00:05

Beer garden with braziers so i can toast my marshmallows and actual comfortable chairs.

Ooh & no bastard midges!

PermissionToSpeakSir · 09/06/2018 00:05

I saw an old friend who has been living in America for a few years recently and I was surprised that she knew all about Maria Mac, Posie, Venice Allen - I felt very proud of us Brits.

R0wantrees · 09/06/2018 00:06

I took the dog for a long walk... he's good company but the conversation is limited.

PermissionToSpeakSir · 09/06/2018 00:06

Midges are a bastard. The downside of perfect everything is that insects love it too.

PermissionToSpeakSir · 09/06/2018 00:07

ha ha

R0wantrees · 09/06/2018 00:07

I didn't used to notice the midges... now I feel like I might get bitten. (Isn't there an Avon thing for this?)

PermissionToSpeakSir · 09/06/2018 00:08

yes avon moisturiser i think.

R0wantrees · 09/06/2018 00:09

Surely it doesn't work for all types of midges? (I think I boycotted Avon c 1985)

BertrandRussell · 09/06/2018 00:10

I find I just can't force my brain to think about or read anything about Germaine Greer at the moment. I have a horrible feeling my heart will actually break if I do......

LighthouseSouth · 09/06/2018 00:11

I had no idea there were so many odd things happening
I'm relying on MN for company tomorrow as I have a bunch of life admin to do and DH is working....I've delayed it too long so I need to get it done and then we can enjoy the rest of the weekend.
Right, bed time...boo hiss.

PermissionToSpeakSir · 09/06/2018 00:11

I am not sure to be fair. By the way Rowan, do you have any idea why rowan trees might be referred to as 'bonny' in folk songs? Its a bit of a punt, but with your moniker I thought you might know why they are thought of as special.

R0wantrees · 09/06/2018 00:11

Its difficult to know what's best if you don't know if the midges are midges or horseflies or maybe just an allergy...

LighthouseSouth · 09/06/2018 00:11

X post Bertrand
Me too. Pun intended.

BertrandRussell · 09/06/2018 00:12

It was Avon Skin-so-Soft, but they've changed the formula and it doesn't work any more. They probably discovered they put DDT in it by mistake.

R0wantrees · 09/06/2018 00:14

O well, I can indeed tell you a lot about Rowantrees... maybe more than you care to know!
Traditionally they were planted in homesteads to ward off evil spirits. In some places, a barnch of Rowan was made into a loop and hung over the crib of newborns... I have gifted many Rowantrees!

PermissionToSpeakSir · 09/06/2018 00:14

Bert don't worry about Greer - she's always hated feminist activists and group actions - she is an academic and intellectual. She is probably getting the heeby-geebies with all the #MeToo stuff - she probably wants to drag feminism back into more dry academic analysis where she can feel at more of a remove.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/06/2018 00:15

Avon Skin so Soft. Oddly enough, I've got a spray bottle of it on my bedside table, bought last time we went to Mull but unused. As I've got the window open and the lights still on I may as well try it. Hm... it's described as a 'dry oil spray'... feels quite nice on forearms, quite strongly scented which is probably why it works - citronella and limonite.

R0wantrees · 09/06/2018 00:15

I like gifting trees... its a nice way to shop.

PermissionToSpeakSir · 09/06/2018 00:17

That is lovely - I am actually interested in the whole thing about Rowan Trees, why they were seen as special - aren't they quite spindly? A bit like elderflower bushes?

R0wantrees · 09/06/2018 00:17

I think the thing about Greer is that she doesn't easily reduce her book into a smaller interview-type size. Definitely not twitter-friendly.
