Brew

arranfan · 13/11/2018 17:17

BettyDuMonde - is it your daughter? I've been wondering about her.

arranfan · 13/11/2018 17:21

Sorry - that was intrusive.

hand held out to you

BettyDuMonde · 13/11/2018 17:21

Just been into my daughter’s infant school for a meeting with her teachers, the head and my daughter’s Macmillan nurse, to teach them about her illness.

Been holding it together in front of my DD so far but having to momentarily rejoin the outside world has made maintaining our bubble rather challenging.

You sound like such a strong mother, And that sounds like such a difficult conversation to have had. I deeply get the need to maintain the calm facade with your daughter but the shock of hearing yourself detail reality to others and see how they respond to it.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/11/2018 17:28

I can't begin to imagine. Thanks

silentcrow · 13/11/2018 17:31

Betty Flowers i hope school are brilliant for you.

BettyDuMonde · 13/11/2018 17:48

Thank you all ❤️

School are wonderful, the hospital is marvellous, we’ve landed in the lap of an expert consultant, and we honestly couldn’t pay for better care if we were billionaires.
The NHS is a very precious thing. We’re very lucky.

Still, all I want today is the impossible... a cuddle off me Mam.

Definitely not feeling grown up enough for this!

Lots going on at present with work etc. so I do what I always do when I want to clear my mind - I'm baking. Any requests? I'm trying out some of the recipes from Alice Medrich's gluten-free book Flavor Flours and all of the ones so far have been very well received.

It's too damp to do something with the smoker (or, more accurately, I lack appropriate cover) tho' I'm very much hankering after some smoked cheese, nuts, and butter.

I've got some straightforward pasties, pies, and assorted rolls if anyone fancies a variation on a late-ish Ploughman's and can supply their own cheese (I have plenty of chutney and pickles I can drop in).

A swift espresso and back to it. Enjoying the music and general chitchat.

arranfan · 17/11/2018 10:10

Might be able to get the smoker out today. I've got almonds, cashews, walnuts, and hazelnuts - the smoke options are alder, oak, cherry, cedar, and mesquite.

Any suggested combinations before I start loading the trays?

I'm cedar smoking some butter to go in fruit cakes for Christmas.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/11/2018 10:22

Flowers Betty - I've missed the backstory, but wishing you all the best in any case.

BettyDuMonde · 17/11/2018 10:29

Thanks everyone!

Spartacus it kicked off the night of Posie’s event in Manchester - I couldn’t use my ticket because my daughter (6) was in A&E with a virus that wouldn’t go away.

By Sunday night she was in intensive care - the virus had kicked off a life threatening autoimmune response, it’s called haemophagocytic lympohistiocytosis. It’s not cancer but the treatments are the same (inc chemo and bone marrow transplants). It’s fatal in around 40% of cases and is always fatal if untreated - lucky I didn’t decide to go to the talk and take her in in the morning instead! Shock

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/11/2018 10:33

Holy Fuck. I'm so sorry. Wishing your DD all the very best.

BettyDuMonde · 17/11/2018 10:36

We’re beyond lucky to have such a wonderful NHS! Recovery will be a long round but everyday is better than the one before 💙

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/11/2018 10:42

I'm so pleased that she is dong well.

When I toured the Houses of Parliament I touched the feet of the statue of Clement Atlee in gratitude. I mourn the post-war consensus.

As we stand round, imbibing our preferred libations, take a moment to read through this, and marvel at the beautiful, fragile, search for knowledge (Insight trip to Mars):

ErrolTheDragon · 21/11/2018 22:35

SmileI liked that!

arranfan · 26/11/2018 00:05

I must remember to tune in for the Minutes of Terror tomorrow for the trip to Mars.

In other news, really sorry that I missed the One Law for All event in London. There are so many issues affecting women at present.
