Ha! We had a deal that regardless of what was happening with me DH had to stay with the baby in hospital once born, as it was she wasnt separated from us at all. I had the others at home so a baby swap would have required real effort Grin

I've mentioned my anthropologist prof friend before, and she's really interesting on the subject of paternity tests. One of the big breakthroughs in anthropology over the last ten, twenty years or so has been the rise of DNA analysis, not just for modern societies but historically too.

The remarkable thing is that by tracing y chromosomes and mitochondrial DNA through the generations, it's now possible to get accurate measurements of what's known as "false paternity", and the percentage is remarkably stable and remarkably low both across cultures and across historical periods (IIRC it's round about the 5% level). Jeremy Kyle behaviour is relatively low. But far more men think they're being cuckolded than actually are, if the number of men getting paternity tests is anything to go by. So, once again, the problem turns out not to be women's behaviour, but men's misogyny and insecurity - and fascinatingly in this instance science allows us to measure it in action.

FermatsTheorem · 23/06/2018 23:46

Corrigendum: a quick Google throws up as first peer reviewed article one which puts the rate of false paternity at 1.9% so even lower than I remembered.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/06/2018 23:53

How have I lived this long without ever having encountered the word 'Corrigendum' before? I had to look it up, and then find out usage versus erratum. Something new every day.

LighthouseSouth · 24/06/2018 00:42

@FermatsTheorem

I am so not surprised by that rate.

ISaySteadyOn · 24/06/2018 06:49

Misogyny gets everywhere doesn't it? That idea that women can't be trusted. Is that why female 'No's are never listened to?

Waddlelikeapenguin · 24/06/2018 09:24

Fermats

Brilliant & very interesting that the rate is so consistent Smile
I wonder if the rate varies across class/status at all - all the worry about royal lines etc.

LighthouseSouth · 24/06/2018 10:44

every excuse that comes up for male behaviour isn't really an excuse or reason of any kind.

I can't make the comment I'd like to make next as I'd like to stay with you all lovely folk on MN Grin

Sciencelogic · 24/06/2018 11:04

Fermats
That is interesting.
The fact that it seems to be stable across cultures and history makes a really important thing to remember and quote.
It's funny how important facts like these are kept quiet and brushed under the carpet.
Actually, funny is not right the word is it? More like tragic.

Sciencelogic · 24/06/2018 11:11

Corrigendum = Coronation Street writers having a vote on a gender identity scandal storyline.

ClownStar · 25/06/2018 16:06

Bit bloody hot out there, I'd quite like a massive glass of chilled white wine but that would be foolish at 4pm so I'm making do with lime and soda.

And also telling everyone that FiLiA tickets are now on sale: www.filia.org.uk
I know there was an enthusiastic MN contingent last year!

ErrolTheDragon · 25/06/2018 17:32

No ice cream and I CBA to go and get any ... but i had frozen sliced banana, which blended with a little bit of Greek yogurt, a teaspoonful of cocoa and a few almonds was pretty good yet virtuous. 😇

LighthouseSouth · 25/06/2018 17:36

I have a bizarre craving for crisps Confused

Errol, that sounds like something worth trying!

Melamin · 25/06/2018 19:45

Crisps are always good Grin

Unfortunately rather dry and salty - need a lot of liquid.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 25/06/2018 19:49

Crisps - you must have been sweating & need the electrolytes or you just like crisps
Have just eaten strawberries Smile drinking gallons of water it's far far far too hot for me.

LighthouseSouth · 25/06/2018 22:17

Not a fan of salty stuff
I once heard that wanting crisps is a sign of a restless brain and that makes sense to me.

Ooh I am so sick of the football. Horns honking every night. Grr.

LighthouseSouth · 26/06/2018 11:21

well, there are certainly some characters around these days. Confused

Melamin · 26/06/2018 11:30

Is that football related Confused
or the general numptiness on the board?

LighthouseSouth · 26/06/2018 11:30

oh sorry I should have made that clear

it's the board this morning.

Melamin · 26/06/2018 14:26

Yes, they are tiresome.

I have just had a tunnocks teacake and feel sick. Sad I have avoided eating any for a whole week and though I would enjoy it.

LighthouseSouth · 26/06/2018 14:42

oh dear
maybe it's a temporary feeling?

I've lost the plot on the government proposals on self ID - I've seen next week floated as a date for something but not sure what it is? Might have confused myself with the upskirting bill.

Then we will be busy dealing with Dump. What a time to be alive!!!!

Waddlelikeapenguin · 28/06/2018 01:25

Noooo Melamin
Have you tried eating them in different ways? I prefer biscuit then marshmallow then chocolate Grin

LighthouseSouth · 28/06/2018 14:17

I have officially reached the point where I have no idea what anyone is trying is to say.

Melamin · 28/06/2018 14:31

I just eat them the right way up, so the marshmallow gets stuck on my nose. Grin

It is like wading through treacle, just to find something to read, at the moment. Yesterday was bad.

Good news - we are approaching 12345 on the petition Wink

ScarletBegonias · 28/06/2018 15:00

Hello, all. May I join you? You can admire my new #ManFriday I Am Sportacus tee shirt!

Is everybody finding that MN is running terribly slowly today? I thought it was me at first but I'm not having any other internet problems and MN is barely functioning on iPad, iPhone or pc. And there seem to be double posts in several threads, maybe because people think their post hasn't worked and try it again.

Maybe it's the heat. I hope the MN server isn't under attack - although it wouldn't surprise me.

Still. Gives us a chance to sit and ponder.
