Give women proper pockets

Is anyone else still amazed that those making womens clothes still don't think of such little practicalities as deep pockets, even for coins, keys, maybe phone etc? You can be lucky with winter coats, but at this time of year you need a handbag or rucksack for your items, pain in the butt when you watch DH and DS slip stuff in their trousers and off they go. Some would say wear mens jeans, yeh if they fitted our figure thank you. But no, women have to be curvy and gorgeous and not have bulging pockets, or accept impractical clothing as par for the course.

YY to pockets! Can't bear being encumbered with a bag.

Pockets only hold so much, though - phone, coins, keys, tissue.
Depends how much you carry round with you, but bags are sometimes needed as well.

I have seen baby clothing with pockets. What does a 6mo old need pockets for?!

(Of course, it was baby BOY clothes...)

SuperDandy · 05/06/2018 09:36

I love pockets I do. Gurt big lovely deep ones, big enough to fit an actual phone in.

My brother once spent all my money after I gave it to him to stick in his pocket at a club night. I still haven't forgiven him, and I've hunted out pockety clothes ever since.

Toast do good pockets. I've also seen them into the seams of dresses before when I really really wanted a dress but it didn't have any pockets.

Especially essential if you use crutches, making handbags tricky buggers.

And fake posters can fuck right off.

I read an interesting article not long ago in the history of pockets, and ho they disappeared from women's clothes at around the same time shorter sleeves came in, bring shaved armpits alongside. The loss of pockets was to do with the fashion houses seeking a sleeker silhouette for draping fabrics onto.

deydododat When you're just nipping to the shop you don't need much more than keys, coins and tissues. Maybe a credit card. Maybe a phone. And most men in the UK manage without carrying a bag, unless they're going to work - because they have pockets.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 05/06/2018 10:19

Of course, men manage, but they don't carry tampax and make-up (I don't use make-up at all, but many women do).
Just pointing out pockets and the answer to everything.

I've just bought some great exercise leggings from neonysweets that have big pockets. I'm a ultra walker and these are fab for holding phone , earphones etc. No need to take a rucksack for smaller walks / dog walks now.

Pockets make a huge difference

IamXXHearMeRoar · 05/06/2018 11:18

As an added comment on the issue of men and pockets the recent trend for skinny jeans on men has resulted in some outrageous overstuffed pockets looks. Why don't men (who have the option of practical pocket choice) choose according to need?

I keep seeing guys walking along the street in ball crushingly tight troos at half mast, pants and crack sticking out and a wallet the size and shape of a cricket ball jammed into a pocket. Cannot be comfortable.

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 05/06/2018 11:49

I need phone, keys, mini wallet - if it's just me going out. Decent jeans pockets cover me, or coat pockets deep enough they won't fall out. I'd gleefully take inside pockets (carefully positioned like one of those gun holsters so they go along the side of my boob rather than trying to be at the front though).

The trouble is if I go out with the kids, then I carry more things.

Of course pre-kids, it was still a pain, because the moment DP (or any of the DPs before now that I think about it) realised I had a bag, they instantly offloaded their keys/wallet/phone into my bag for me to carry!

AngryAttackKittens · 05/06/2018 11:58

That's just not on. Works the other way round for me, DH carries keys, my phone if needed, etc in his enormous man pockets so I don't need a bag if we're just nipping out for coffee, etc.

SalveGrumio · 05/06/2018 12:15

All I have in my bag is wallet, keys, phone, work pass. All of which could fit in a pocket.

Tenko · 05/06/2018 12:18

Having just read the Marian Keyes web chat I feel I must share this.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/06/2018 13:24

I generally need: cash / debit card, lipstick, keys, phone - all eminently pocketable

deydododatdodontdeydo · 05/06/2018 15:18

It's a good job that women's clothes with pockets are freely available then Confused

OutsideContextProblem · 05/06/2018 15:30

They’re really not deydoo. I went to an art thing recently where bags and outside coats were not allowed. I have a huge wardrobe but the only way for me and my DD to carry keys, debit cards, tampons and (crucially) 2 smart phones without them falling out or being pickpocketed was for me to borrow one of DH’s work jackets and roll the sleeves up.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/06/2018 15:39

I'd say 10% of my clothes have pockets. I'd say 90% of DP's do

gallicgirl · 05/06/2018 15:41

Patriarchy, innit?

Anyone with boy/girl children will also know that females get thinner flimsier fabrics, shorter slimmer t-shirts, even girls knickers are poorer quality than boys knickers.

Not all of us can afford brands that accommodate fancy features like pockets and non-see through fabrics.

MrsDilber · 05/06/2018 15:44

Good point, I need pockets all the time.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/06/2018 15:50

Oh goodness me that's so true. Sturdy elastic and thick material on boys' pans. Whispy material and thin elastic on girls'. Even from toddler age

deydododatdodontdeydo · 05/06/2018 15:52

I'm honestly not sure if I own any clothes without pockets, except my running lycra.
And I hate shopping, I'm in and out the shops as quickly as possible, I don't shop around.
And I live in a crap town without major retailers.
