Give women proper pockets

Is anyone else still amazed that those making womens clothes still don't think of such little practicalities as deep pockets, even for coins, keys, maybe phone etc? You can be lucky with winter coats, but at this time of year you need a handbag or rucksack for your items, pain in the butt when you watch DH and DS slip stuff in their trousers and off they go. Some would say wear mens jeans, yeh if they fitted our figure thank you. But no, women have to be curvy and gorgeous and not have bulging pockets, or accept impractical clothing as par for the course.

I don't buy skirts, trousers, dresses, jackets or trousers that don't have pockets.
I've been caught out by clothes with shallow pockets that aren't quite big enough for my wallet and keys.

MimiLeBonk · 01/06/2018 18:05

Yes, yes, yes.........
I buy trousers on this basis - no pocket, no purchase.

Branleuse · 01/06/2018 18:13

I hate pockets in trousers and dresses. Completely ruins the line of them, and accentuates my already ample hips.

It also means I forget stuff in them and wreck my washing machine.

I prefer a bag

Waddlelikeapenguin · 01/06/2018 18:16

Bowlofbabelfish

One of my pet peeves. I demand pockets. I sew, and everything I make is pocketed to within an inch of its life.

This is me too!
Even kids clothes - my son's jacket has 5 pockets, my daughter's 2 Angry
I sew the rest Grin

IndominusRex · 01/06/2018 18:18

I fully support this campaign, sign me up. If only M&S realised that women's clothes with proper pockets (and no random frills) are THE way to save their business.

barnacharmer · 01/06/2018 18:19

I bought my 3 yr old jogging trousers, the pockets were bloody decorative. Of course, my dc is a girl so needs to learn her decorative place. I would never have thought to check jogging trousers FFS but I will now

Bowlofbabelfish · 01/06/2018 18:20

There are several Etsy sellers making dresses with pockets - and many indie pattern companies include them as well.

Wishmeluck2018 · 01/06/2018 18:21

I have been complaining (to my family) about this for a long time! Anything that look nice dont comes with real pockets although most have fakes!

Flooffloof · 01/06/2018 18:25

Yeah I am on board with this, it's a campaign right?
I do buy men's clothes, when I have to replace stuff, I look at the men's section first.
Btw I know it's summer now but when you buy plaid shirts go check the men's section first. They are better quality, bigger pockets and cheaper.
Ok they fasten the other way but that's not important.

PocketsForMe · 01/06/2018 18:33

Where do I sign?

I had pockets in my wedding dress

MikeUniformMike · 01/06/2018 18:33

And if anyone from M&S is reading - sleeves on dresses please.
I think their likeliest customers are looking for short, 3/4 or long sleeves but not those cap sleeves or sleeves with tabs for rolled sleeves.
In natural fabrics of decent quality and with no faffy details that make ironing a PITA.

Claudiawinksatmen · 01/06/2018 18:35

Yes! I resorted to dog treats in my bra the other morning as Next have decided to stop putting front pockets in their Jeggings this year. I am limited in where I can buy bottoms being tall - I can't bring myself to wear a dog walker type bum bag. Belt loops or rather the lack of is my other peeve, so many places seem to be leaving them off jeans and Jeggings this year.

FinallyHere · 01/06/2018 18:36

Absolutely, I agree, but then, its not just pockets, though, is it?

Look at shape of feet, then look at men's shoes. Roughly the shape of the feet. Look at women's feet, compared to shoes. And all the nonsense that is spoken by people selling women's shoes, they will stretch etc. Ufff.

Evening clothes. DH had a suit made for him (he is v wide across the shoulders and there were always wrinkles. Part of the consultation included what pockets to be made where, but also lovely features like a concealed buckle and strap either side of the waistband, which gives some three or four inches difference at the waist. On a cost per wear basis, it is one of the most reasonable outfits he has ever bought, still as good as new and 'fits' him decades later. I di get lots of wear from 'outfits' but four inches difference means i need a new frock.

As for routine maintenance, he showers and shaves, deo and he is good to go, occasionally sun creme and moisturiser. Compare that to wax, nails, pedicure, regular hair cut and colour...

I don't like to think of conspiracies, but the evidence is there.

DelphiniumBlue · 01/06/2018 18:46

So, BowlofBabelfish, if you retrofit (great word, Rabbits) pockets on a dress, do you need to use the same material as the dress? I have seen white pockets in haberdashery shops, but think they must show when the material gapes?

SardineReturns · 01/06/2018 18:49

The most awful thing is that kids clothes do this as well, lots of girls clothes even for young with fake bloody pockets! In school uniform as well!

And AND the girls stuff and women's stuff as well - trackie bottoms jogger bottoms - often seem to have FAKE drawstrings WTAF enraging.

DD1 v slender, thought OK can tie these, got home, the fuckers are fake! DH literally couldn't believe it, did not compute. I said, this is like the FUCKING POCKETS.

AngryAttackKittens · 01/06/2018 18:51

Pockets for everyone! Especially inside pockets on coats, not having those is ridiculous.

IndominusRex · 01/06/2018 18:55

Fully supporting sleeves on dresses also. I would particularly like to see sleeved and pocketed shift dresses and shirt dresses.

I normally buy men's jeans as am tall and proper pockets.

IndominusRex · 01/06/2018 18:56

YES to inside coat pockets

DelphiniumBlue · 01/06/2018 18:58

Yes, jeggings. None of mine have front pockets at all.

I think we should compile a list of shops which stock womens clothes with pockets.
Useful pockets, not just decorative ones, like on the Next dress I am wearing at the moment, where the pockets are so low down I have to bend to reach them, and are not secure enough to keep my phone in! However, I do see that Next a selling a dress this season described as " pocket dress" - maybe we should all get one to encourage them.!

AngryAttackKittens · 01/06/2018 18:58

On the sleeveless dresses issue, not only do women mostly want sleeves, M&S are designing primarily for the UK. How often in the British climate is sleeveless really the best option from a practical perspective?

Sleeves, clothes are meant to have them!

userabcname · 01/06/2018 19:04

I have "borrowed" (i.e. he is never getting it back) DH's denim jacket. It has such an incredible array of pockets. It can fit a full set of keys, phone and purse easily with tons of room to spare. I can't believe how we get fobbed off with pockets - my jacket has 2 shallow pockets (can fit keys but phone is precarious as it easily slips out and definitely not a purse) and 2 more that aren't really pockets, they are some kind of bizarre and useless decoration that really winds me up.

Another yes to inside pockets in jackets!

strawberrypenguin · 01/06/2018 19:16

Yes! I want proper pockets!

Sadly the fake drawstring is also used in men's clothes (or at least boys) I've lost track of the number of fake drawstring trousers I've got for my skinny boys. I check every tine now.

Popchyk · 01/06/2018 19:24

I hear ya.

And yes to the inside pockets.

We have two dogs and I do a lot of dog walking and, yes, my winter coat (a parka) has deep pockets so fine for poo bags, treats, phone, tissues, leads, everything.

In summer I prefer a sleeveless jacket but the pockets you could maybe get a handkerchief in. That's it. I am currently wearing my mum's old bodywarmer from the 80s that she was finally throwing out. It has a rip on the back because I caught it on some barbed wire. DH calls it my 'market trader fallen on hard times' look. Fecker.

But I dare not throw it out because, insubstantial though the pockets are, it is better than anything else that I've seen in the shops.

Any recommendations for a sleeveless jacket with decent pockets? Budget maybe 100 quid or so and I honestly couldn't care less what it looks like.
