Give women proper pockets

Is anyone else still amazed that those making womens clothes still don't think of such little practicalities as deep pockets, even for coins, keys, maybe phone etc? You can be lucky with winter coats, but at this time of year you need a handbag or rucksack for your items, pain in the butt when you watch DH and DS slip stuff in their trousers and off they go. Some would say wear mens jeans, yeh if they fitted our figure thank you. But no, women have to be curvy and gorgeous and not have bulging pockets, or accept impractical clothing as par for the course.

YES to pockets!
I have a few dresses from Oliver Bonas which have nice roomy pcckets. The hope of more bepocketed clothes keeps me going back there.

It really really bugs me with smart trousers. Like the primary teacher above, I found that when I was a junior doctor I really needed pockets. Some of this stuff will have been usurped by smartphones now, but here's what I generally needed to carry around:

Stethoscope
Pens (multiple)
Pen-torch
Tourniquet (now all disposable, but not then)
Pager (sometimes multiple)
Watch (not allowed on wrist as bare below elbows, but needed for timing things)
Locker keys
Local medication formulary (mini ringbound booklet thing)
Mini oxford handbook of medicine (the bible for oh-shit-I'm-not-sure-what-to-do moments)
Jobs list / patient list (A4 sheets, printed out and shredded at end of day)

My male colleagues could shove all this stuff in their trouser pockets

Female colleagues could not. Obviously carrying a little handbag around isn't feasible. My female colleagues and I ended up with some odd solutions that included having everything with a clip on it so it clipped to trouser waistbands like some sort of tool belt, wearing bumbags, and in my case I bought a plastic clipboard thing that was about an inch deep and opened up onto an A4 box. Suffice to say we did look less smart than the blokes, and I always felt a wee bit like a secretary dashing about with my bloody clipboard. One of the major pros of being rotated to a surgical job was that we all got to wear the exact same sets of scrubs, therefore there was pocket equality.

Sorry for the rant. That has clearly been gestating for a long time.
Pockets for all!!

I started typing Marimekko the other day and the first google suggestion that came up was "marimekko dress with pockets" Grin

You really would think a high street retailer would look at the simple things we want and oblige. But no, we have to put up with whatever they decide to dole out to us. I'm increasingly turning to the internet to meet my clothing needs.

Chandlersthirdnipple · 04/06/2018 13:58

I have just ordered a load of pockets to sew into my favourite pairs of trousers. I will be pocketed!

thurmanmerman · 04/06/2018 14:16

@FreddieMac I've just got to your post about Gap boys thankyou! I was reading through all the posts about buying mens' clothes internally wailing as I am rather small.

OlennasWimple · 04/06/2018 14:20

The single best thing about the ubiquity of mobile phones is that women's clothes more and more often have pockets.

IamXXHearMeRoar · 04/06/2018 14:24

I get stuff tailored, it doesn't cost that much and then you can have the pocket fit what you need. Most recent was a lovely £30 blazer from txmaxx, sleeves were a bit long so had those taken up and new nicer lining put in and inside pocket big enough for phone etc - cost about £20.

IamXXHearMeRoar · 04/06/2018 14:26

oh tailor always grumbles a bit about "ruining the line" sod that I'd rather a useful jacket personally.

J4nice · 04/06/2018 14:29

You are lucky if you get pockets, I got fake pockets when my clothes showed up they can't be used at all

OlennasWimple · 04/06/2018 14:31

If I get married again, I'm going for a dress with pockets (number 3). And I loved that Meghan's little bridesmaids had dresses with pockets Smile

Even the Handmaids in Gilead had decent pockets in the sleeves of their red gowns FFS!

IamXXHearMeRoar · 04/06/2018 14:33

Can someone link to boys/mens awesome pocket jeans with a good fit for a short arse size 14?

bunbunny · 04/06/2018 15:00

I recently bought a nice summer skirt from Sainsbury’s that had good pockets in. There were several different fabrics and I thought I might get another as it was comfortable, flattering and practical...

Went back a few days later and they had almost all gone - hopefully they will realise that pockets equal good sales! And figure that they will do more!!

deydododatdodontdeydo · 04/06/2018 15:09

I love pockets.
Luckily, I have never had an issue getting women's clothes with pockets in, like other posters.
I just buy jeans and outdoor trousers mostly. Never seen a difference in pocket size between the men's and women's.
All my coats and jackets have pockets, but they vary of course.
DH was irritated because his latest coat doesn't have inside pockets and his previous one did. Mine does, because I like to have them.
I don't wear dresses, so that helps, but I never have any problems getting trousers with pockets in.

NordicNobody · 04/06/2018 15:29

Yes! My 2 year old sons trousers have pockets, but mine don't! Wtf does he need pockets for?!

But then again, if they give us pockets how will they convince us we need overpriced handbags?

MikeUniformMike · 04/06/2018 15:38

Handbags will always sell because they are covetable. Your 2 yr old needs pockets because he is a little man.

OlennasWimple · 04/06/2018 16:13

Tell you what really does "ruin the line" of a decent jacket - having a handbag on one shoulder...

lightthedarkness · 04/06/2018 16:37

Yes! Where's the petition. I'll sign.
There used to be pockets - now they're all sewn up if they're there at all.

BitOutOfPractice · 04/06/2018 16:45

Yes please to pockets. Pockets are liberating!

I'd LOVE inside pockets on jackets. Not having one means I'm constantly shoving tickets / notes inside my bra which is uncomfortable and impractical

MikeUniformMike · 04/06/2018 16:47

A but a clutchbag or a handbag that just has a handle doesn't ruin the line of a jacket. Quite impractical sometimes though.

Bespin · 04/06/2018 16:49

There is a company that makes skirts with proper. Pockets they look very smart

fuzzyfozzy · 04/06/2018 16:51

Omg just thought the same today!
Checking dh pockets and thought how roomy they are. I can't even get a phone in mine

Picassospaintbrush · 04/06/2018 16:56

You are supposed to unpick the sewing in the sewn up ones? I always do. I thought that was just a temporary thing?

MikeUniformMike · 04/06/2018 17:17

I unpick them too. I've been caught out by clothes with fake pockets though.

Ekphrasis · 04/06/2018 18:58

There was a thread about these trousers recently

Persifleur · 04/06/2018 19:38

YY to pockets! Can't bear being encumbered with a bag. I second what pps have said about Lands' End - if you can forgive their egregious apostrophe and total lack of stylishness. Their stuff is well made. My LE waterproof jacket has two inside pockets, one with a zip! It's big enough for mobile, passport etc. And four outside pockets, two of tbem zipped. Barbour are more stylish - and pricey - but they usually have good pockets too. But fashion stuff... it is indeed like trying to find foot-shaped shoes.

FreddieMac · 05/06/2018 07:06

Lands end coats for kids also have an awesome inner fleece that goes over kids hands, like a mini glove. Fab
