Give women proper pockets

Is anyone else still amazed that those making womens clothes still don't think of such little practicalities as deep pockets, even for coins, keys, maybe phone etc? You can be lucky with winter coats, but at this time of year you need a handbag or rucksack for your items, pain in the butt when you watch DH and DS slip stuff in their trousers and off they go. Some would say wear mens jeans, yeh if they fitted our figure thank you. But no, women have to be curvy and gorgeous and not have bulging pockets, or accept impractical clothing as par for the course.

The only coat I have with inside pockets is from Lands End. If you have pockets, you can go out without a bag, which is very liberating.

AngryAttackKittens · 01/06/2018 19:36

Bags are also harder to carry over a heavy coat, so again, pockets in coats!

LassWiADelicateAir · 01/06/2018 19:42

Branleuse

I hate pockets in trousers and dresses. Completely ruins the line of them, and accentuates my already ample hips.

I like pockets but only for putting things like a tissue or my reading glasses in. I agree they spoil the line. I have several coats with quite deep pockets but try to avoid using them for anything more than gloves. I never carry phone, keys or money in them.

I prefer a bag me too. It makes me wince seeing people obviously carrying phones or wallets in jeans pockets. From the point of security I think bags like the cross- body Radley pocket-bags are far more secure.

Sign me up too. I've recently taken to putting my stuff in my partner's pockets, with an instruction for him to complain to women's clothes manufacturers if he doesn't like it.

MountainWitch · 01/06/2018 20:21

Oh yes pockets are a real feminist issue.

I have a couple of dresses from Toast with fabulous deep pockets but they tend to be oversize styled items and not to everyone's taste. And pricey (I only buy in sales or eBay)

Makes me cross that I can barely get a bank card into my jeans pockets and DH saunters off with huge set of keys, wallet, phone, pens...

In the dim past in the mid to late 70s when I wore jeans I bought Levi's men's jeans. "Women's jeans" weren't really a thing (or if they were they were horribly uncool things that mums wore). A man's waist 26 was the equivalent of a size 8. I couldn't get anything much in the pockets beyond my student ID card. I do recall carrying a cheque card in the back pocket and it snapped.

yep, I love a dress with pockets!

DD was asking for clothes with pockets for her treasures the other day, she's 4. Realised that the only shorts she had with pockets were actually designed for boys. Shorts designed for little girls don't have pockets, shorts for boys do.

I've managed to find a couple of school summer dresses with pockets for her, so far not found any winter school dresses with pockets. I've decided I'm going to try to only buy her clothes with pockets if at all possible. Girls should have pockets to put interesting stone/shell/leaf in as well as boys.

TerfsUp · 01/06/2018 21:32

I agree. I want pockets in my clothing.

CoffeeOrSleep · 01/06/2018 21:32

oh yes, and jacket pockets please! So what if it spoils the line. I would like to have the option of putting my phone and keys in a pocket. I have small cross body bags that can only hold purse, phone and keys, that I use for times I don't really need to carry much and want my hands free. Would be nice to carry nothing and shove the important stuff in pockets like DH does.

KatyaZamolodchikova · 01/06/2018 21:42

Yes to pockets!! We went out for a walk today, and I didn’t want to take a bag, strolling through fields. But couldn’t fit my phone in my pockets, so had to give it to DP, who fit it in one of the SIX decent sized pockets in his cargo shorts.

Bags are so bad for backs & shoulders too.

I will join a campaign for pockets for women. Loudly & vocally.

FreddieMac · 01/06/2018 21:43

Uniqlo!!!!! Proper pockets ! Some, get this, with hidden ZIPS (faints).

Lands end also.

All saints jackets. M
Also if you are tiny, H&M boys clothes, life changing pockets.

FreddieMac · 01/06/2018 21:44

Or if walking fancy bum bags: decathlon (sporty) Tiger - looks like a watermelon slice (!!!!!!!!)

TerfsUp · 01/06/2018 21:46

So what if it spoils the line.

I agree. I dress to please myself.

NC4Now · 01/06/2018 22:01

I’m a journalist. A proper old school, notebook and shorthand, hack.

Imagine my joy when I found a dress which fits a spiral bound pad and my phone in the front pocket.

Theinconstantgardener · 01/06/2018 22:03

Yeah fake drawstring- what is with that?
I also love proper pockets. I remember a while back there was a thread on this very subject and someone called the useless womens ones ' The pockets of patriarchy!'

Datedandold · 01/06/2018 22:05

I bought some dresses from H&M with decent pockets- £12.99 a pop. They’re good for summer.

Bagadverts · 01/06/2018 22:06

I either want proper pockets or none. The tiny ones or pretend line is so annoying.

Mainly though I want choice. A range of clothes. some women prefer high heels or clothes without pockets so don't get rid of them, but also design stylish flat foot shaped shoes and a coat with pockets that actually hold stuff.

NC4Now · 01/06/2018 22:06

The pockets of patriarchy Grin

flowersonthepiano · 01/06/2018 22:26

I want pockets too!

I have a few items with good pockets and they get worn more than anything else. Because of the pockets. I hate bags if I can manage without one I will.

As for 'spoiling the line' - with my figure, that is the very least of my worries. Grin

flintyminty · 01/06/2018 22:26

Mistral have a good range of skirts & dresses with pockets. Lovely prints.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 01/06/2018 22:31

I hate short pockets in jeans!!

Ds1 can get his entire ipad in his pockets!!

My phase 8 skinnies have lovely deep pockets

bluerunningshoes · 01/06/2018 22:33

yanbu
I back in jeans (smart black ones) for workwear because of the pockets thing.
that and itchy sweaty manmade fibres.

LightofaSilveryMoon · 01/06/2018 23:17

Yes yes yes to pockets! Totally what others have said - adequate, well-placed pockets are vital. Including inside pockets.

Also, reading though the thread:

IndominusRex:
If only M&S realised that women's clothes with proper pockets (and no random frills) are THE way to save their business.

MikeUniformMike:
And if anyone from M&S is reading - sleeves on dresses please.
I think their likeliest customers are looking for short, 3/4 or long sleeves but not those cap sleeves or sleeves with tabs for rolled sleeves.
In natural fabrics of decent quality and with no faffy details...

MiddleMoffat:
If you have pockets, you can go out without a bag, which is very liberating.

Someone gave me a £25 Marks and Sparks gift card for last Xmas. It is still in my bag, and it is now June, FFS.

Yes to pockets, practical ones.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 01/06/2018 23:30

Popchyk would a fishing jacket/vest do? They have loads of pockets Smile

HopeClearwater · 02/06/2018 00:12

Joining the thread because I’ve been going on and on about pockets since I was a little girl. We NEED pockets. The best thing about my expensive school blazer was all the pockets, and especially the inside one. Now I’m a primary school teacher I need pockets more than ever.
