Transgender campaigners and organisations have released an open letter to Channel 4 criticising Genderquake, a season of programmes touted as an exploration of the gender debate, as "counterproductive".
Signees are particularly concerned about Genderquake: The Debate, a studio discussion hosted by Cathy Newman that promises to look at what gender means in 2018. It will discuss topics including: 'what defines our gender identity', 'how that affects our rights', 'should it be easier to change gender' and 'does gender matter'.

The letter, published by indy100 in full below, argues that the debate will give legitimacy to transphobia, prejudice and the notion that trans identities are up for discussion. This concern is presumably stoked by the presence of Australian-born academic and writer Germaine Greer on the panel, who has previously said transgender women "can't be women". continues...

"The letter is published in full below and has been signed by dozens of prominent transgender and non-binary activists and campaigners - and allies - alike, including Fox Fisher, Owl, Stephanie Hirst, Juno Roche, Travis Alabanza, Kate Llewellyn, Jack Monroe and India Willoughby."

Disappointed with Greer, she came across as incoherent & bewildered when she "couldn't remember" her quotes....

CecilyNeville · 08/05/2018 22:52

This format isn't working - whenever anyone is getting to the crux of their point, Cathy Newman cuts them off. Too much shouting, too many breaks.

IIIustriousIyIllogical · 08/05/2018 22:53

Fab point from Sarah about women being talked over

She's really shone tonight.

Elendon · 08/05/2018 22:53

CJ and Munroe are being treated with kid gloves - but Greer is being treated like shit. It's a bloody disgrace. Well said Ditum re Munroe's tweet on the Women's March.

ReluctantCamper · 08/05/2018 22:53

if channel 4 remove that audience member they can fuck off

IIIustriousIyIllogical · 08/05/2018 22:54

This format isn't working

A host who at least appears to be neutral would help....

TinselAngel · 08/05/2018 22:54

What's the point in having an audience if they're not going to be brought in?

boatyardblues · 08/05/2018 22:54

Does anyone know her name?

FGS don’t name her on here.

spontaneousgiventime · 08/05/2018 22:55

MB demanding an audience member removed for heckling.

DoubleRamsey · 08/05/2018 22:55

The irony and hypocrisy of the trans people saying they are being silenced

Seriously ?!

rememberthetime · 08/05/2018 22:55

I think Greer was amazed that any journalist would take quotes out of context and deliver them in such a disrespectful and unfair way.

then try to railroad her into accepting them as transphobic.

For any journalist or interviewer that is by definition supposed other be neutral, that is unforgivable and clearly flummoxed greer. understandably.

ReluctantCamper · 08/05/2018 22:56

children 'assigned female at birth', or girls cathy as the rest of the fucking english speaking world says.

TinselAngel · 08/05/2018 22:56

Sarah Ditum needs to get off that chair, ask everybody else to budge up, and sit at the top of the table. I'm really annoyed she's been seated virtually in the audience.

LikeAZombie · 08/05/2018 22:56

The seating arrangement is interesting. Jenner and Monroe both closest to the host then gg. Sarah and the transman both at the back

Lefthanddown · 08/05/2018 22:57

There's definitely a hierarchy given to the panelists.
GG seems as though she's given up on putting her view forward. Though I think she shouldn't have denied she'd said something

boatyardblues · 08/05/2018 22:57

Sarah smashing it on transing kids.

AncientLights · 08/05/2018 22:57

More 'assigned' at birth. Monroe is such a little snowflake. This is really pissing me off.

Terfulike · 08/05/2018 22:57

GG is 80. Please dont be dissappointed in her.

spontaneousgiventime · 08/05/2018 22:57

SD is just fantastic standing up for kids.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/05/2018 22:58

Disappointed with Greer, she came across as incoherent & bewildered

I think she is getting old and forgetful, and that is incredibly sad.

Plus Newman was inexcusably aggressive when questioning her.

NotTerfNorCis · 08/05/2018 22:58

It's striking that most of the talking is being done by the two natal males. Sarah is the only one forcibly putting the gender critical case, and she keeps being shouted down. Even the three natal females supporting the TRA side have been mousy and quiet.

ReluctantCamper · 08/05/2018 22:58

thank god they invited sarah

Badgerthebodger · 08/05/2018 22:58

I gave up at half time, I can see from here it hasn’t got any better. This could have been a good debate with a better host and no bloody CJ. In all honesty, though I like GG for not giving a shit about what she says, I think it became focused on her and how BAD she was for saying BAD things and we all must tell her off because she is BAD. No CJ and no GG would have been more interesting. Very sorry for Sarah D, I could tell she was bursting with points to put across but was just denied the chance every single time. Munroe looked pretty goady, I loathe people shouting over someone - let them make their point then refute it (if you can). That’s how debate works. I’m not surprised TRAs don’t want debate. They have nothing to say and no calm, rational arguments or rebuttals. They have shouting, and deferential hosts.

Sparklingbells · 08/05/2018 22:58

Really want Germaine to ask if she’s on trial - cos that’s exactly how it’s come across

CecilyNeville · 08/05/2018 22:58

Sarah is fab. She's getting so many good points across.
