NUS Conference breaks down after the UK Border Force Arrive

The following is made up from tweets from the #NUStrans18 conference which seems to have gone slightly awry after the gender neutral toilet signs were removed. They'd been stuck up the day before, converting the women's bathroom to the gender neutral bathroom, so that they'd have 'men's toilets' and 'non-men's toilets.'
Thing's started innocently enough

"I am fucking fuming
Once again food is a mess. Vegan option was a total after thought many of us can't eat it due to allergies and IBS. So what are we supposed to eat for lunch? Leaves. #NUStrans18"

Some bright spark at the hotel scheduled a simultaneous conference for the UK Border Patrol and that's when things started to heat up

"The gender neutral signs at #NUStrans18 have dissapeared entirely, I'm blaming the border force, in the meantime I have awkwardly trudged into the womens toilet that used to be gender neutral. Cue enby screaming"

"#NUStrans18 is one of the few places we feel relatively safe but now here we are on edge because UK Brdr F*rce are here."

They decided to take matters into their own hands

"Currently in occupation of the bathroom lobby #bathroomcaucus #nustrans18"

"Be careful of slippery floors in the gender neutral bathroom - we have some cis tears 💦 #BathroomCaucus #Toiletgate #NUSTrans18"

cis tears or man piss?

"#NUStrans18 white people can we PLEASE listen to POC about engaging with the border force"

"#nustrans18 so update on what happened in the bathroom caucus: We were guarding the gender neutral sign, but weren’t in the way of the doors or anything
And a cis woman came in (not even to pee), saw the sign and went off 2/??
She started saying ‘what about our toilets’ to which we informed her that the gender neutral toilets are for everyone, and if she was uncomfortable she could use the women’s upstairs
She starts shouting ‘one at a time! Respect my authority! We’re here for longer than you!’"

"whoever occupied the bathrooms, you gonna apologise to your POC delegates? #nustrans18"

"great lil update from Finn on #BathroomCaucus these people are attempting to deny our right to pee and we were simply defending that, we were just minding our own business, she’s the one that got angry and aggressive and in our faces #NUSTrans18"

"#nustrans18 I sincerely apologise if mine or any other delegates actions escalated conflict/racism towards QTPOC. The thing is, I honestly don’t know what else I could have done? I didn’t provoke her, I didn’t get in her face."

"I'd like to apologise formally for the misunderstanding and poor handling of the situation that happened in the past hour. We never set out to aggrivate anyone or intended to cause unnecessary stress. I'm extremely sorry #NUStrans18"

Then identity politic work battles begin.

"I want to sincerely apologise for the statement I delivered post-motions at #NUSTrans18. It was insensitive given the nature of the situation regarding QPOC discrimination at the event. I'm autistic and completely failed in my reading of the tone of the room, but it's no excuse."

"Okay so white people at #nustrans18, us PoC are very, very exhausted from dealing with all the racist microaggressions here. We need reparations so please send us pizza, snacks, cigarettes, chocolate, dinner money etc. My PayPal is "

I'm sorry if people find this reporting offensive because they're young and vulnerable youth but might I remind you that these students represent our future elites. In 20 years time they'll be writing our laws. Also, it's f%cking hilarious. See, this tweet they're pretty succinct

"NB: Some of the motions at #NUStrans18 could be interpreted as attacking women’s rights/protections, or even as anti-feminist “hate speech”. The response is a bit of criticism and piss-taking on twitter NOT attempts to close down and disrupt the event, or pickets by masked thugs."

The NUS Needs to have a word with itself. If these students are vulnerable and this explains their behaviour then should they really be voting on issues which affect the entire student body? Are they being used as pawns in someone else's agenda?

To be fair most of them are teenage uni students and I think there have been many variations of obnoxious student politics over the decades. They definitely don't have a monopoly on that.

It's just particularly unpleasant because many adults who should know better have let this seep into the real world, inform ridiculous policies and allow some really misogynistic and homophobic behaviour to go unchecked.

Spot on Ova

SardineReturns · 01/05/2018 17:43

A microaggression might be something like when men expect you to get out of their way when you walk down the road and bash their shoulder into you if you dont' move fast enough, or manspread all over your space so you either have to cramp up and even then are still in bodily contact, or move.

I'm not sure what the microaggressions these students experienced were though.

SunsetBeetch · 01/05/2018 17:43

Wow oh wow. Grin

Does anyone know if the changing of the toilet signs was official, or did the NUS organisers just take it upon themselves to do that?

DJLippy · 01/05/2018 17:47

UPDATE. IDENTITY POLITICS EATS INSELF - BUT THE LESBAINS/WOMEN FIRST

"End #NUStrans18 make #nustransfemme19 and #nusblacktrans19 tbh(and make them small, feminist conferences, with minimal policy and maximum budget) Two small trans conferences, committees, and campaignns could be run for about the same cost and focused on paying activists(and white transmascs would get faster liberation with a black+transfemme officers than a campaign that included their bs)"

For those of you not up to date with your woke queer vocab, I'll translate.
"Next year the conferences should be devided into two - one for the black trans community and one for the men who dress like women. WOW how progressive. Racial segredation and banning all the women (LESBIANS)
Somone replied (a lesbian BTW)

"But surly - everybody within the community FTM, MTF, NB, POC etc etc. Have their own issues? That can’t be addressed by those who aren’t going through it? I think it’s good to get everyone together - because as a whole you can get more out of it! Because silencing any part of the community isn’t going to help anybody at all. We should work together to promote a more diverse conference for us all. Rather than dividing each other we should come together as a collective :)"
"Nah silencing racist transmisogynists helps everyone! #NUStrans18"
"But you’re silencing members of the trans* community?"
"Yeah the white transmascs are we not clear on this. You're useless and reactionary, overall #NUStrans18 "
(LETS BE CLEAR THIS MEANS ALL THE WHITE WOMEN/LESBIANS)

How on earth are such delicate flowers going to survive post-Uni?

I could answer this.

I won't.

Bloomed · 01/05/2018 17:51

Again. What the hell is their issue with transmen? This is all so bizarre.

LangCleg · 01/05/2018 17:52

It's just particularly unpleasant because many adults who should know better have let this seep into the real world, inform ridiculous policies and allow some really misogynistic and homophobic behaviour to go unchecked.

Yes. They are drunk on their own Kool Aid, which is fine while it's confined to campus but not when it creeps out into the real world.

LangCleg · 01/05/2018 17:54

Can I just say that MY student politics involved doing port pickets for the miners strike. Mine was a better class of student agitprop. So there!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/05/2018 17:54

Thanks for the heads up OP, that made very entertaining reading Grin

I couldn't help yelling "splitters" in my head at the tweet suggesting a separate trans femme and trans poc conference Grin

As an aside there seemed to be about 12 people at that conference, who pays for the venue?

RedToothBrush · 01/05/2018 17:54

I think that's slightly misrepresentative. Those comments about transmen are from one person using the hashtage #nustrans not @nus_trans.

Either way though. They are not identity politics eating themselves. Its a TRA looking a lot like a MRA.

SardineReturns · 01/05/2018 17:56

When they say "transmascs" are they actually saying "lesbians" as by definition lesbians are GNC (however they present) due to their sexuality?

What about transwomen who prefer a masculine mode of presentation, or non binary people who do? Are they banned as well or is it just lesbians?

Wanderabout · 01/05/2018 17:57

Oh Monty Python where are you now?

I think Ada's objection is basically towards anyone female (and white?) regardless of how they identify.

Ereshkigal · 01/05/2018 18:11

I am crying here Grin they never disappoint, the NUS!

DJLippy · 01/05/2018 18:12

But isn't Ada a white male?

But isn't Ada a white male?

Don't assume their racial identity Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 01/05/2018 18:15

How on earth are such delicate flowers going to survive post-Uni?

Some of them will grow up, and be a bit embarrassed about their student posturing.

Bloomed · 01/05/2018 18:17

@Wanderabout yes and I'd love to have heard Peter Cook's take on this too.

MargeH · 01/05/2018 18:18

At least our student misdemeanours weren't recorded for posterity on the internet.

RedToothBrush · 01/05/2018 18:19

What was so wrong with nicking traffic cones?

NotTerfNorCis · 01/05/2018 18:25

But isn't Ada a white male?

A white middle-class male. But he's found his way to the top of the oppression tree.
