How is it that trans people have come out of the shadows and become so visible, in films and music, in ads, on TV, on the radio, when for decades their lives were hidden? What has enabled that change? Is it hard-won battles for equality, changes in gender roles, the birth of the internet, consumer culture? Maria Margaronis explores what lies behind the Trans Revolution and discovers that even asking the question is fraught with difficulties.

Thanks for posting Kestrel. Will listen: hopefully without steam coming out of my ears.

AmoraObscura · 03/04/2018 14:35

This will be interesting

bellasuewow · 03/04/2018 15:14

Where can I find a piece of leather to bite down on. It’s not easy being peaked.....

Melamin · 03/04/2018 19:57

Anyone listening?

LanaKanesTerfyVagina · 03/04/2018 20:01

Tuning in now.....
Don't how much my blood pressure will take though....

BlackeyedSusan · 03/04/2018 20:04

Yes

LanaKanesTerfyVagina · 03/04/2018 20:05

Have Wine so should help.

TeaCoffeeCakeGinWine · 03/04/2018 20:07

Already irritated.. “either transgender or transphobic”

nauticant · 03/04/2018 20:08

On the plus side they used a clip in which someone said "desist".

On the minus side the presenter characterised the voices in the debate as either being either "transgender" or "transphobic".

I'm still hopeful.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/04/2018 20:09

2015-2016 is the year the nymbers of referrals increased. What happened that year?

nauticant · 03/04/2018 20:09

Ahh, that leapt out to you too did it TeaCoffeeCakeGinWine?

LanaKanesTerfyVagina · 03/04/2018 20:09

Yeah feeling slightly edgy....but still slightly hopeful.

OohMavis · 03/04/2018 20:09

Well it hasn't started well.

"People are afraid to talk for fear of being trolled, either for being transgender or for being transphobic"

Those are the only options are they Hmm

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 03/04/2018 20:11

I can't do it. And I practically live on R4.

Can someone please let me know afterwards?

LanaKanesTerfyVagina · 03/04/2018 20:11

Ah they've gone down the non-binary route.

Gender is bullshit.
Sex is innate.

WTAF is hardabout that.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 03/04/2018 20:11

They are challenging the pink and blue system? Hmm

LanaKanesTerfyVagina · 03/04/2018 20:11

Already quite pissed off

nauticant · 03/04/2018 20:11

Sigh. It's all about gender. The word "sex" doesn't seem to be part of the presenters vocabulary.

It's not black and white! It's fluid! It's freedom!

LanaKanesTerfyVagina · 03/04/2018 20:17

AAaaaaaarrrghhhhh

nauticant · 03/04/2018 20:17

For fuck's sake, having boy's toilets and girl's toilets is not being restricted to "the gender binary". Who is this "expert"?

LanaKanesTerfyVagina · 03/04/2018 20:19

Pressure rising.....

BlackeyedSusan · 03/04/2018 20:21

Tif. Talking about male privaledge. Interesting that they have noticed a change now they present as a man.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/04/2018 20:24

Talking about the use of media /internet to give people ideas about different identities including on face book. In 2015 there is a spike in info about gender fluidity. The mylee cirus effect

BlackeyedSusan · 03/04/2018 20:26

Someone now postulating that the rise in the normality of body modification makes it more normal for people to change their bodies.

nauticant · 03/04/2018 20:27

The presenter: These days "changing your body isn't a big deal."
