I'm so with the rest of you on missing the 80s and 90s, when it was OK for men not to look like angry lumberjacks and women weren't expected to walk around in full on drag makeup at all times (14 year olds contouring, wtf?). There are still pockets of it being OK in a few places, but now you have to actively look for it, whereas back then it was everywhere.

Part of it is definitely the "gender" kids not having the backbone to shrug in the face of ridicule (which was part of what I always liked about the men who tend to adopt the glam or more feminine goth or emo looks), but there's a lot of authoritarianism going on too. These are not people who cope well with the idea that they can make a demand and other people can say "no". The rise of gender ID provides them with an excellent way to be as bossy and controlling as they like under the guise of social justice.

Keeping with the video theme of brilliant heterosexual men not giving a fuck about society's narrow definition of things Things That Are Manly, how about ballet?

OlennasWimple · 29/03/2018 21:07

Kurt Cobain in eyeliner.....

Melamin · 29/03/2018 21:13

Ballet is very manly [nods wisely] You just need to be in a room with a man that is jumping [blown away] It is powerful.

(Ballerinas bloody brilliant too)

Viago · 29/03/2018 21:16

I hope SF comes back to read this and realises everyone got bored of talking about SF and moved onto much more interesting people, e.g. Adam Ant. I think that will enrage SF.

Well done Mumsnet!

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 29/03/2018 21:19

I still do lost he’s still fucking amazing.

holycheeseplant · 29/03/2018 21:24

The NZ rugby team do ballet it's so tough. (To support core. Prob a lot of Pilates)

hipsterfun · 29/03/2018 21:43

Pretty sure that Adam Ant caused the first stirrings of heterosexuality in my 8 or 9 year old self.

For me, it was Boy George. Make of that what you will Grin

DarthArts · 29/03/2018 21:51

Whilst we're on the topic of Vince, let's not forget the first band he formed was Depeche Mode.

Goodness me, I'm starting to feel nostalgia for leg warmers and ra ra skirts ;-)

SunsetBeetch · 29/03/2018 21:56

I lurved Robert Smith from The Cure

I liked Adam Ant except for the lip gloss. Hate it on anyone.
Eew.

DarthArts · 29/03/2018 21:58

Ooh yes :-)

Caribou58 · 29/03/2018 22:03

I'm a new member, hotfoot over here from Twitter, where I was alerted to the fact that MN is the only place where women can safely discuss these issues without suffering abuse, blocking, suspension, etc. These are frightening times for women, to be honest. I have no kids but am a former high school head who would be enraged if I were expected to disseminate some of the nonsense schools are receiving these days.

ArcheryAnnie · 29/03/2018 22:07

On the Adam Ant theme, here's Matthew Baynton looking pretty in a ponytail, frilly shirt and eyeliner!

BeUpStanding · 29/03/2018 22:08

Hi Caribou... You've arrived just in time, we're having a party in here!

53rdWay · 29/03/2018 22:08

Adam Ant = gorgeous.

Teacuphiccup · 29/03/2018 22:09

Brian Molko

That is all.

CanIBuffalo · 29/03/2018 22:09

Welcome Caribou

holycheeseplant · 29/03/2018 22:13

Love the way we've gone from - who was it again? - to horrible histories and Depeche Mode!

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 29/03/2018 22:14

Sunset

Robert Smith is mine.

Sorry

holycheeseplant · 29/03/2018 22:20

Welcome caribou!

Terftastic · 29/03/2018 22:20

OMG, I actually fancied Matthew Baynton for a while after seeing that Horrible Histories video.

Obviously memories of my first crush - Adam Ant, I was about 10, I think. First poster on my wall. And he had significant mental health issues - I wonder what would have happened to him in these "woke" times. Probably nothing good.

Another - In homage:

boldlygoingsomewhere · 29/03/2018 22:22

Michael Praed was a gorgeous man with long hair...Also love a man with eyeliner.

Loved all the different 80s tribes - things seem much more uniform in fashion now.

holycheeseplant · 29/03/2018 22:25

I was only 4 when stand and deliver was out but I remember a bit of a crush on him in that video.

And yes to Brian. Interesting that he was at goldsmiths and is an honorary member or something.

Terftastic · 29/03/2018 22:29

Btw - apropos to nothing, but I just want to tell you all -

Someone tweeted to Lily Madigan "I loved you in Hanson" and Madigan replied "I wasn't in Hanson". Which I just thought was too funny.
