Wanted to share this excellent article ( written by a man ) I just saw on Twitter. It's pretty long and for many of us isn't saying anything new, but it's worth a read as it makes some good points.

Tom that is how it works.
Pop yep that's it

Datun · 28/03/2018 21:22

tom

Putting an @ in front of a name will bold it and send an email notification to that user, if they have subscribed to the function.

Alternatively, you can put an asterisk either side of the name (cut-and-paste the name by hovering over it), that will bold it, but not send a notification.

Putting ^ either side of a word, sentence or paragraph, will italicise it.

Welcome Tom and thank you for your superb article.

I was going to ask you to share the link to the petition petition.parliament.uk/petitions/214118 but I see someone has already done so.

I'm afraid you can't edit/delete posts though - you can report and ask MNHQ so but they may not do so

thanksjaneshusbandatcaresouth · 28/03/2018 21:27

That is a superb article.
Many Congratulations.

Irishfeminist · 28/03/2018 21:51

Cheers @TomFarr. I wasn't being churlish, and I appreciate the crucial wider platform. We just get a bit battered by the whole thing sometimes (one or two of us quite literally Sad )

MargeH · 28/03/2018 21:55

I've sent the link to the article to my MP too. I was wondering how to approach it with him but this afforded the perfect opportunity. Even better that it didn't come from a perceived radical 'I hate all men' feminist with an axe to grind.

niceberg · 28/03/2018 22:10

Blimey. What an excellently well reasoned article.

aaahhhBump · 28/03/2018 22:14

@TomFarr

You missed the SNP. Especially given the approval of the Gender representation on Public Boards (Scot) Bill.

Which includes a new definition of the word woman.

Thumbs up..!!

TheRagingGirl · 28/03/2018 22:25

It is excellent. I think it’s a shame it’s taken a man to write it ...

But then women have been saying the same things and being bullied, silenced, or no platforms for several years.

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 28/03/2018 22:30

TheRagingGirl - He probably isn't receiving half the abuse a female columnist would have done. Hmm

TheRagingGirl · 28/03/2018 22:31

I know. I guess it proves the existence of patriarchy and masculine privilege.

I’m just sad that it’s taken a mans voice for the arguments to be heard. And annoyed, if truth be told.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 28/03/2018 22:32

That was a fantastic article!! It still doesn't give me hope for men though. Tom is a rarity.

MargeH · 28/03/2018 22:36

@aaahhhBump

I am truly shocked at that tweet. A definition of a 'woman?

?????

MrsFogi · 28/03/2018 22:42

The more voices (men's and women's) talking about this the better.

Beamur · 28/03/2018 22:42

Calm, reasonable and well written.

dorothyparka · 28/03/2018 23:32

Very interesting read - thanks

LangCleg · 29/03/2018 08:41

Genderist ideology should be exposed for the classist, ethnocentric thought experiment of the intellectually onanistic middle classes that it is.

Tom - yesterday you tweeted this and it's my favourite tweet of 2018 so far!

Destinysdaughter · 29/03/2018 08:50

Looks like Tom is getting some hate on Twitter for what he's written:

Those comments are pretty telling, aren’t they? The one complaining about ‘“women” like Meghan Murphy”, as if feminists who won’t do as they’re told are not woman-ing properly...

Lightroom · 29/03/2018 11:18

I've been having horribly messy arguments with a couple of male family members about this stuff.

I sent Tom's article to one of them last night, and now he completely understands where I'm coming from, and that just because I'm concerned about the GRA, I'm neither anti-trans, nor transphobic. It's an absolutely massive relief to be understood and not vilified. (And to be fair to family member, he didn't know it was a man who'd written the article till he'd finished). HUGE thanks, TomFarr!

LittlePearl · 29/03/2018 11:26

I showed it to my husband, who has been sympathetic but not really 'got' why I've been like a dog with a bone about this for the last year...... now the penny has dropped! He's going to sign the petition.

Ereshkigal · 29/03/2018 12:58

Thanks for your reply to me Tom. I may very well take you up on that offer!

PissMinge · 29/03/2018 17:37

@TomFarr - fantastic article! Thank you! I bravely shared it on Facebook (I have already lost several close gay male friends over this issue) and got this unexpected response from a Corbyn-supporting friend. I wonder what you (and MNers) think of it? :

"No. The left don't do gender politics, or anything else that distracts from the core goal of replacing capitalism with socialism, because the latter has equality built in from the ground up. The authors - like many - are confusing the left with liberals. We're not."

TomFarr · 29/03/2018 17:52

@PissMinge

Sounds like a Marxist/Socialist. In short, you may as well have the conversation with a brick wall when it comes to this. They believe economic class not sex is the root of everybody's oppression, it's like they did most of the work in figuring it out and then fell at the last hurdle. Economic oppression didn't exist before people started to give birth, did it. They hate being conflated with the "modern left", which to be fair you wouldn't want to be tarred with that brush either. But "The Left" encompasses more than just Marxists and Socialists, it does my head in when they forget that and assume any discussion about the left is about them. Also, the entire point of the article was about how those that call themselves socially left (markedly not economically left) aren't actually adhering to leftist principles of equality etc. It wasn't an essay about economic oppression or Marxist/Socialist social principles. He's trying to answer a question I didn't ask.
