Wanted to share this excellent article ( written by a man ) I just saw on Twitter. It's pretty long and for many of us isn't saying anything new, but it's worth a read as it makes some good points.

UrsulaPandress · 28/03/2018 19:48

Of.

CisPinkHoodie · 28/03/2018 19:51

Great article

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 28/03/2018 19:57

It is a great article Tom.
Would you think about sharing the link to this petition?

I am seriously wearied by the number of people on the left, especially men, who seem to think being a socialist or a liberal is an internal virtue and not a political position

This.

'I identify as right'

mrsreynolds · 28/03/2018 20:04

I've sent this to my MP.
Thank you

Ereshkigal · 28/03/2018 20:04

Tom, this article is a tour de force. I've been trying to explain my position today to a young male Labour activist (older than you though I think) and I can't wait to give him this. He sort of gets where I'm coming from but your article is so reasonable yet strong and compelling and I hate to admit it but he will take it better from a man :(

Ereshkigal · 28/03/2018 20:07

I talked him through Lily Madigan etc but he said he wasn't aware of LM and didn't really seem to get it.

qumquat · 28/03/2018 20:12

Thank you Tom. I have shared this with a 'woke' friend and I'm feeling quietly confident it will make him think.

mrsreynolds · 28/03/2018 20:14

...how many of us are sharing this knowing it will be taken more seriously because it's written by a man?

Ereshkigal · 28/03/2018 20:17

Me definitely. As I said I'm in a particular situation where I want to convince a young Labour man.

Ereshkigal · 28/03/2018 20:18

To be honest I've thrown ideological purity out of the window with all this. It's too important to lose.

TheGoldenBough · 28/03/2018 20:18

I haven't shared it yet because I'm still nervous about it but absolutely know it will be taken more seriously because it was written by a man.

Sadly, it's why we need men to step up and be saying it.

CisPinkHoodie · 28/03/2018 20:18

I have also emailed to my MP

"I am seriously wearied by the number of people on the left, especially men, who seem to think being a socialist or a liberal is an internal virtue and not a political position. "

Yep. Like Owen Jones with his transwomen are women/no debate stuff.

He genuinely sees it as a generous act for him to hand over women's hard-won rights and spaces to men. Despite him personally ceding no rights or space whatsoever.

It isn't generosity on his part.

It is theft.

mrsreynolds · 28/03/2018 20:24

Me too eresh

DarthArts · 28/03/2018 20:28

Apologies for the bold fail on the quote from Pop

mrsreynolds · 28/03/2018 20:29

Pop...love that. So true.

WiggyPig · 28/03/2018 20:32

Exactly that 53rd

It reminds me of studying the arguments on predestination during the Reformation. "We are God's elect, therefore anything we do is God's will and inherently good."

MrsFogi · 28/03/2018 20:36

Bloody brilliant article!!! This evening I am feeling reinvigorated and will be emailing the link to my MP with a request for his views on the matter. On Friday I will be "ManFriday"ing in Next - visiting the men's loos and then asking to see the manager to ask about erasing women.

Hi all - sorry for not replying, my phone has been blowing up this afternoon. I'll try my best to answer any questions you've asked now:

First off, thank you everyone for taking the time to read and respond, and for all your kind words.

@Irishfeminist - yes, I agree. I understand it must be infuriating to have a man say what women have been saying for years/decades and get recognition (or conversely, not get called something disgusting on Twitter). As a man, I recognise the position of privilege I hold in society - my aim when writing these things is primarily to engage other men, but also to add my voice to the movement. Work needs to be done to engage men to accept women's ideas on their own merits, and that is certainly a battle I will take up gladly. However, if adding my voice to women's concerns raises the exposure of an issue, then I'm happy to do that also. Thank you for taking the time to read it, and I really do appreciate the point you're making.

@Datun - yes, absolutely. The abuse women face online is vile and reprehensible, and I doubt I'll be subject to much, if any. Time will tell, but ultimately it isn't comparable. I'm sorry for the disgusting behaviour that women face at the hands of masculinity and patriarchy, I hope I can continue to fight against it by engaging other men.

@Hypermice - I've got my umbrella up for the shitstorm heading my way haha

@BonsaiBear - thank you for the suggestion, I will definitely bear in mind. I had to edit and proof everything myself, and sometimes you just get tunnel vision, will definitely take it into account on the next one though.

@poster DontCisgenderMe - here for the long haul

@CircleSquareCircleSquare - yes absolutely, I signed a few days ago (I think it's the same one), and will share on social media etc

@Ereshkigal - my main aim is to engage other men, so please do send it his way, and feel free to link him to my Twitter if he wants to talk directly

@Popchyk - you didn't ask a question, but I just wanted to say I think Owen Jones is a disgusting little misogynist that is about as useful to the discourse around gender as peddles would be on a wheelchair.

TomFarr · 28/03/2018 21:06

Also - I'm new to Mumsnet so if the above hasn't tagged the actual users, I'll delete and repost if somebody tells me how to do it haha

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 28/03/2018 21:10

Thank you so much for promising to share, that would be so useful. It’s annoying it takes a man to engage people on this topic on social media when we’ve been saying the same thing for you years but I’m incredibly grateful to you Tom.

Popchyk - you have put it beautifully.

STOP THE WHOLESALE THEFT OF WOMANHOOD NOW.
