LGBT shortlists?

The only thing is, Stonewall calculate that around 6-7% of the population are LGB - so LGB people aren’t particularly underrepresented in Parliament. And, correct me if I’m wrong, as far as I know LGB people have never asked for their own shortlists! So the lists would probably be dominated by the “T” - who I think are about 0.3 of the population or something?

That’s the trouble with these kind of well-meaning interventions. I understand the thinking behind women-only shortlists (we are 50% of the population), but if you have trans lists (disguised as LGBT lists) then surely it would only be fair to have them for every minority group that wants them?

Ereshkigal · 20/01/2018 17:32

Good points. But I fear it's either that or they'll be on women's.

BeyondWW · 20/01/2018 19:33

I'd support disability only shortlist's, with sex dysphoria included as a mental illness. I'm sure that will go down well with the TRAs Grin

Vicxy · 20/01/2018 19:45

DH is going to donate to this when he gets paid, in his actual name, which is extremely uncommon. Have told him about all the doxxing stuff and that and also about the phishing email I received after donating. He says he has no issue with supplying them with his social media accounts, and if they show up at his work or even try to contact them, his boss will tell them to fuck off. So yeah.

Deciduous · 20/01/2018 19:50

Yeah apparently the current Parliament is the most LGBT in the world! 45 out MPs of 650. And the ones from the 2015-17 Parliament were more likely to hold their seats than the average MP too.

You can break it down further within that category. There are 36 men and 9 women, so gay and bisexual men are probably over-represented. Not sure whether lesbians are or not. And obviously there is nobody trans. But LGBT as a whole, is not a group that appears to need any kind of special measure to get a representative number of MPs elected.

Vicxy · 20/01/2018 19:54

So the TRAs have set up their own Go fund me page as a reaction to all the hate speech, £200 raised in 11 hours of a £50,000 target.

For what?

Jack Monroe has told Pink News that anyone who donated in the name of a trans person has been refunded and blocked from further donating.

How does Jack have so much sway with gofundme? I remember a while back there was a fundraiser for some poor kid who had been refused cancer treatment and had to go abroad, and so many of the donations were in the names of Teresa May and o0ther various Tory members. Its always been a large part of gofundme that people can donate in other peoples names. Why is this one campaign any different, and how has she managed to get people blocked from donating/ I can kind of understand them refusing donations done in false names, but not refusing to let the original donator donate again.

Vicxy · 20/01/2018 20:08

Also this may be very childish, but I will be seeing Jack Monroe (and actually possibly Jack Munroe) at a wedding next weekend. I am going to try and persuade him to donate though it may be harder if I tell him that he will have to send in photo ID to prove who he is. Hmm.

ShoesHaveSouls · 20/01/2018 20:09

Jack's been all over Twitter talking about legal action, identity fraud, defamation and libel, and how she's got great lawyers, Katie Hopkins selling her house etc. As Jennifer James herself says 'Jack won a case against KH and now thinks she's the attorney general'. Hmm

ShoesHaveSouls · 20/01/2018 20:11

Oh god, I would just have to do that, Vicxy. This silencing (and now blocking donations) has gone too far.

irretating · 20/01/2018 20:35

New update on the go-fund me page

Go Fund Me addiction part 2
Vicxy · 20/01/2018 20:44

I feel a bit sorry for people donating to the other fundariser now that I have read it, the one started by a TRA. They are being had. A gofundme is not needed for people to donate to charities that help trans people. They could donate direct via the actual charity. Therefor, I think that fundraiser is for some extra cash in the person who started its bank account, nothing else.

Vicxy · 20/01/2018 20:51

ATS in certain areas might actually kill the party off in those areas.

Could always be for 'self-identified' trans people Grin

Given its apparently reasonable for anyone to self identify that they are a woman.

Vicxy · 20/01/2018 20:52

Posted before I finished again, how to stop this..anyway

It would be reasonable to have a trans officer, distinct from an lgb one and a women's one - where the officer had to be trans - which would in effect create ATS for this one office.

I like this idea. LGB and T are entirely different anyway.

Vicxy · 20/01/2018 21:03

Jack's been all over Twitter talking about legal action, identity fraud, defamation and libel, and how she's got great lawyers, Katie Hopkins selling her house etc. As Jennifer James herself says 'Jack won a case against KH and now thinks she's the attorney general'.

I meant someone I know in real life, called Jack Monroe. The other Jack will have issues in court trying to prove ownership of a name thats quite common.

I am seriously hoping hes willing.

Geronimoleapinglizards · 20/01/2018 21:09

That would be amazing if he would Vicxy

Ekphrasis · 20/01/2018 21:51

@irretating - that's rather fierce? Where is it from? I'm confused about what the CLP are.

irretating · 20/01/2018 21:58

Yes it is. Labour trans activists are kicking back and trying to get gender critical women expelled from the party, this particular motion is for Garston and Halewood CLP.

I say bring it. Can you imagine the fall out? Men colluding and conspiring to kick women out of the party. Men arguing that women aren't and have never been discriminated against on the grounds of sex. Men telling women that we have no place to debate and discuss rules which could have implications on our right to privacy and dignity.

NannyOggsKnickers · 20/01/2018 21:59

I am so angry that I’ve just joined the Labour Party.

Let’s stop this from the inside!

irretating · 20/01/2018 22:00

Welcome comrade!

irretating · 20/01/2018 22:01

Also, always good to 'meet' a fellow Terry Pratchett fan.

NannyOggsKnickers · 20/01/2018 22:07

Hi irretating

Nice to see a fellow Pratchett fan.

All this is rather like something he would poke gentle fun at in a Discworld Book.

Nanny Ogg would never stand for this bullshit.

ShoesHaveSouls · 20/01/2018 22:13

Absolutely, vicxy, I totally get that, and I hope you can pull it off Grin

I don't agree with Jack at all, I was just saying what she's pasting all over Twitter, and she's probably got Go Fund Me a bit scared.

AbsintheFriends · 20/01/2018 22:25

I know this is a rookie question, but does anyone have any tips for contacting an MP? Ours is one of the 2017 new starters, young and female so I'd like to find out where she stands on this. If I email, I feel it should be to ask her for something specific rather than just to rant about how ridiculous it all is (which feels like the extent of my capabilities at the moment) Any help from wiser and more politically astute MNers would be very welcome

cafeaulaitpourvous · 20/01/2018 22:26

But JM states yesterday they were a lesbian woman....

I am so fucking confused...

It's like dealing with children

Datun · 21/01/2018 00:58

@AbsintheFriends

This is a good place to start for a non-ranty letter. They talk you through what to say.

They then suggest you include personal experience/anecdote.

You might want to hit your MP between the eyes with something from the trans threads here?

Perhaps Paris Lee talking at the women's March? Make sure you include a cut and paste of the incredibly sexist things Lees has said so they get it.
