hmmm. ok so its daily mail reporting but I am conflicted
perhaps good if child was being pushed into something he wasnt

That's a fantastic article, thanks ItsAll

I am reposting it on the General thread too

I am really spooked by Mermaids keeping lists of feminists and banning them from contributing at conferences etc.

This was posted on the other thread by ItsAll but I think it's worth reposting here.

www.feministcurrent.com/2016/10/26/lobby-groups-like-mermaids-dictate-policy-discourse-around-gender-identity-kids-lose/

"In short, the government is taking its cues from a lobby group that apparently keep lists of gender critical women, striking them from participating in an ostensibly public forum."

This is terrifying!

IBelieveTheEarthIsFlat · 27/10/2016 16:02

Epic C&P disaster, sorry!

MyWineTime · 27/10/2016 22:57

That's a very interesting article.
Mermaids are a scary organisation.

annandale · 28/10/2016 06:44

I think it must be very hard, as a support group for something affecting children, to keep in your mind, are you supporting the children, or their parents? A lot of the time the outcome will be the same, but it is a different thing.

MrsJamin · 28/10/2016 06:50

It seems they are just supporting early transing of children, regardless of the support that the child or parent actually needs.

ageingrunner · 28/10/2016 07:40

If my child told me that they thought they were trans, I think I'd try and move to an island with no internet.
It'd be interesting to find out if desistance rates are the same for children who've been involved with mermaids and those who haven't.

Missyaggravation · 28/10/2016 09:44

I'm so glad that I have mumsnet, my daughter aged 13 is convinced she is now trans. Mainly because of an Internet friend she made, to me it's fairly obvious that she is a gay female, but discussions ensue. At least we can laugh about the special snowflakes on tumblr.

She is very clever and we have had many a discussion about gender critical feminism and self identification.she has come round a bit; she used to identify as a country Grin

Missyaggravation · 28/10/2016 09:49

To which I replied "am I now the motherland?" My work here is done heh

aginghippy · 28/10/2016 20:24

Here is an article by Helen Lewis in the New Statesman. She seems to be quoting this thread.

SpeckledyBanana · 28/10/2016 20:29

Very balanced, I thought.

Thanks. Was a good read :)

LoveMyPatio · 28/10/2016 21:51

Very good article. Thanks for sharing

MrsJamin · 29/10/2016 06:58

I'm actually really impressed by that article. Very glad that Mermaids is being critiqued, early transing of children and bullying childhood professionals is NOT OK. A parent support group that went far too far.

iPost · 29/10/2016 07:24

Two articles in 2 days triggered by this case

Yet another high profile Trans news story bound to cause an awful lot of people to review their position on "a woman is a woman if they say they are a woman". Cos... rapist.

The memory of Kids Company still fresh enough for people to make comparisons and find too much similarity for their liking.

Mermaids are living in interesting times.

tubasinthemoonlight · 29/10/2016 09:15

One of the former committee members who left Mermaids before me told me this morning about that article in today's DM. I also heard elsewhere that Jane Fae is trying to make Mumsnet remove all derogatory transphobic comments.

IBelieveTheEarthIsFlat · 29/10/2016 09:47

Mermaids is on the case retweeting claims that the DM are not publishing pro-trans comments on that article

ladyballs · 29/10/2016 10:22

Jane Fae is a colossal arse.

Datun · 29/10/2016 10:59

The DM will be drip feeding their info. Wonder what else they have?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/10/2016 11:05

Mermaids is on the case retweeting claims that the DM are not publishing pro-trans comments on that article

I didn't know the DM moderated comments? Shock

IBelieveTheEarthIsFlat · 29/10/2016 11:15

Not sure either but perhaps they do sometimes

But they are taking up the topic

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3883858/Interview-chill-parent-Social-workers-accuse-Christian-family-emotional-abuse-homophobia-refuse-let-teenage-daughter-undergo-sex-change-14.html

God, the ironic hell of the DM supporting women in this and the Guardian throwing us under the bus

PausingFlatly · 29/10/2016 11:54

The DM don't support women.

They use women as a vector to attack other groups they don't like. And vice versa, of course.

There can be some mileage in this sometimes - supping with the devil and all that. Just as long as you don't confuse being used as a vector, with actual support or approval. They'll dump on women from a great height the next day.

PausingFlatly · 29/10/2016 12:08

(As an aside, thank you to whoever posted, among other excellent links, the link to The Transparency Project. I saw the Child Protection Resource take off on MN, and take my hat off to the people who created that and have now created The Transparency Project. Fantastic work. Flowers)

IBelieveTheEarthIsFlat · 29/10/2016 12:10

No I get that Pausing but at least the madness of the situation is getting some attention. The Guardian just print the Lefty view and delete comments from dissenters.

iPost · 29/10/2016 14:18

Jane Fae is trying to make Mumsnet remove all derogatory transphobic comments.

I think Jane Fee has missed the boat timing-wise to go all round up the HERETICS! delete the TRANSPHOBES! on MNHQ.

There has been a tang in the air for a while, indicating that the winds of change are stirring. Mermaids being right slap bang in the middle of a sudden picking up of the breeze ... does not strengthen their position in terms of flexing their muscles at well known entities. Not least cos well known entities probably do not want to get dragged into a series of high profile stories that likely will include naming entities who mindlessly responded with "how high?" when Mermaids ordered them to jump.

I'm not anticipating a hurricane that tears it all down any day now. But IMO there will be a growing wind chill factor that makes it incrementally harder for Ye Olde Censorship Via Faux Outrage to continue.

and a big fat Halle-fucking-lu-jah to that.
