Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Men who parade how "feminist" they are but who can fuck right off...

...as they don't actually want to listen to women who disagree with them in any way.

I am not including common-or-garden arseholes here, as the list would be a billion posts long and the internet would explode. I am talking about the kind of man who writes a long, handwringing article in the Guardian about how we should all listen to feminists more, but then deletes most of the comments from actual feminists that are posted on it.

The two currently at the top of my very long List are:
Ally Fogg
Owen Jones

Nominations, please.

Oh, I've been dealing with a prize example of a MWPHFTABWCFRO today.

"Sisterhood " or for that matter "comrade" doesn't resonate with me at all.

YonicScrewdriver · 19/03/2015 21:33

Ok then, Still. To each their own.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 20/03/2015 18:00

I'd be happy with being a comrade.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 20/03/2015 18:32

Both comrade and sister seem like reasonable epithets to me.

But then, I see the struggle against oppression as a group one.

Dotheyfloat · 23/03/2015 11:08

"He was astonished to learn of the existence of the "cotton ceiling" when confronted with it on twitter and didn't even seem to understand why lesbians might have a problem with it! "

His lack of encyclopedic knowledge on obscure micro-issues exposes him as just another white male who exists inside a bubble of privileged ignorance.

ApocalypseThen · 23/03/2015 11:22

Well, if you're going to write an article in a national newspaper severely criticizing the opinions of a group, it adds significantly to your authority on the subject if you understand how and why they reach the conclusions that they do.

AskBasil · 23/03/2015 11:53

It's so depressing. Everything else he writes about, he researches thoroughly.

Only women don't merit the usual level of research. Sad

vesuvia · 23/03/2015 12:07

From what I've read of his writing, Owen Jones gives me the impression that he is a man who knows little about lesbians, and doesn't care much about their concerns.

Dotheyfloat wrote - (referring to Owen Jones' opinions on the "cotton ceiling"): "His lack of encyclopedic knowledge on obscure micro-issues"

Your comment shows everyone how little you know about lesbians and how little you care about lesbians.

ArcheryAnnie · 23/03/2015 12:11

Yeah - women's bodily autonomy = a "micro issue". Nice!

But I'm so hostile, Buffy! And so angry and obsessed! And I was trying to silence him! By the incredibly sneaksy method of talking about what I was interested in and not what he was interested in! Why can't you see how much I was oppressing him?

(This all doesn't speak well of who in the party is paying attention to social media and the public messages, alas.)

So does anyone think all this feminism may be having a negative effect on men? There are quite a few women in the media that are saying that it might be. was just wondering if anyone thought that way?

ArcheryAnnie · 26/03/2015 16:08

What do you mean by a "negative effect on men"? People with a disproportionate amount of structural power generally find it uncomfortable when that power is redistributed, so am unsurpised if some men don't like it.

OP posts:
CollatalieSisters · 26/03/2015 16:14

And what do you mean by "all this feminism"?

YonicScrewdriver · 26/03/2015 16:14

No, I think all this sexism is having a negative effect on women.

HTH.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 26/03/2015 16:23

Yes, sexism is having a negative effect on women. It also has a negative effect on men. Feminism would actually benefit men. Well, most men.

"And what do you mean by "all this feminism"?"

I'm curious about this too.

scallopsrgreat · 26/03/2015 16:46

Oh the poor men . For centuries they've had privilege and now the meany feminists want to take that away .

But yeah, don't worry about the women who are being subjugated. It's Men who matter.

AskBasil · 27/03/2015 09:01

arandmorgan, of course feminism is having a negative effect on (some) men. It challenges their unearned privilege and tries to level the playing field so that they don't have an automatic advantage in the game of life in comparison to 50% of the human race. People are always uncomfortable with a loss of individual privilege, even when it results in the common good.

OTOH it's having a positive effect on the best examples of their sex. It frees men who would otherwise be trapped in masculine gender roles, to explore their full humanity instead of shutting off much of it as being "unmanly".

PuffinsAreFictitious · 30/03/2015 17:15

Fucking OJ again with his "MPs watch p0rn, but it's all just lads, innit" thing today.

No, you utter skidmark. It's violence against women.

He's really, really gone out to left field on this one.

Cariad007 · 31/03/2015 20:43

Owen's at it again on Twitter, wilfully refusing to listen to women who disagree with him (again) and accusing them of homophobia while he's at it. Skidmark indeed Angry

ArcheryAnnie · 01/04/2015 15:04

According to Owen, women who discuss the misogyny of het porn with him are "Literally erasing millions of gay men out of existence".

"Literally erasing millions of gay men out of existence."

"LITERALLY ERASING MILLIONS OF GAY MEN OUT OF EXISTENCE."

"LITERALLY...."

I would laugh forever, but this twit has traction and a platform. However, this is both the funniest and the worst example of "WHAT ABOUT THE MENZ" I've seen in a while.

Well done Owen!

OP posts:
YonicScrewdriver · 01/04/2015 15:24

I don't even understand that, Annie,

ArcheryAnnie · 01/04/2015 15:34

Well, indeed, Yonic. I think it was just Owen looking for a "gotcha", trying to yet again claim that women talking about violence against women are being homophobic. How dare women talk about women in porn when gay porn exists, too! Despite the fact that we are talking about het porn, not gay male porn! What about the menz?

OP posts:
almondcakes · 01/04/2015 16:00

Owen Jones has gone through a series of phases on feminism:

a. men must stand up for feminism.
b. men must stand up only for liberal feminism.
c. liberal feminism should be used by him, a man, to defend individual male authority figures who watch heterosexual porn.
d. women should not talk about their own experiences because liberal feminist discussion is being had by a man about men and is no longer about women at all.
