Has anyone seen this? I don't really understand this bigotry against trans gendered people.
If we're trying to make the world a better and equal place through feminism, surely excluding people who also want to do this because of their genitals or the gender they assign themselves is going to make this impossible and is a bit hypocritical?

hothead if I understood what was said in the introduction paragraph of the last link-the conference is no longer going ahead? Conway Hall will not be the venue at least?

I know men who've gone through those issues as well, Kim. Doesn't make them women.

Also, biological women go through issues that MTFs don't.

Trans activists protested Vancouver Rape Relief's fundraising walkathon.

What the hell is wrong with these people, protesting an event to raise funds to help victims of male sexual violence.

Actually a man is what you sound like, Kim.

I'm a woman.

NarkedPuffin · 31/05/2012 14:14

It is important to remember that just as someone can be a feminist and not speak for all feminists or a woman and not speak for all women someone can be trans and not represent the views of all trans people.

My DH is a man and he is not represented by MRAs.

What works both ways? There isn't anything in that story about radical feminsits protesting trans events.

A woman who stops a person with a penis from entering the womens' toilets is doing the right thing. Males, XY people are not entitled to go everywhere, invading women's spaces and trampling over our boundaries.

Not sure if it has been mentioned on this thread, but the activists who protested RadFem2012 are now protesting the Women Up North conference. Because of one women-only survivor of sex abuse workshop.

I think the problem is that some trans people see women as having 'privilege' because they were born women. For them, that means we have avoided their 'struggle'. That assumes that we feel the way they do on the inside - that we strongly identify as 'feminine' and are delighted that we were born women. And the flip side is that we are insulted by the idea that people who choose to be 'female' are claiming to have the same experience as us. We didn't get to choose. And I know that trans people wouldn't view their feelings as a choice, but neither would most women view being born into a group that suffers such prejudice and discrimination etc as a privilege.

Maybe the two sides are incompatable as feminists are fighting to free themselves from things that (many, all?) trans people view as being essential to being female - all the outer trappings of gender.

Mtf trans are legally allowed to use women's toilets though. That's the thing. So you might not like it, but to make one person's life a misery for ten minutes whilst you harangue them in public about your personal take on the law is pretty poor.

You don't actually know the screecher was a rad fem though. Could have been your average run of the mill drunk. People do stupid things when they've had a few.

TunipTheVegemal · 31/05/2012 14:51

Kim, I must be being very stupid here because I don't get how the blogger knew the woman was a radfem. The post says, 'It was a gay club, the woman who attacked me was lesbian and the bouncer who shrugged her shoulders and walked away was also lesbian.'

Lesbian and rad fem are NOT the same thing!

In fact I rather suspect this is a case of someone trying to find a way to suggest that Sheila Jeffreys' political analysis causes people to be arseholes (like Madwoman I am not in favour of screeching), when Jeffreys has never done anything violent herself so her detractors have to fall back on blaming her writing for what other people do.
