www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/may/25/radical-feminism-trans-radfem2012?fb=native&CMP=FBCNETTXT9038

Has anyone seen this? I don't really understand this bigotry against trans gendered people.
If we're trying to make the world a better and equal place through feminism, surely excluding people who also want to do this because of their genitals or the gender they assign themselves is going to make this impossible and is a bit hypocritical?

OP posts:
SardineQueen · 31/05/2012 10:03

It really, really is.

bejeezusWC · 31/05/2012 10:08

It's either disgusting or mental!!

Which brings me to...why is it so offensive to suggest it is mental in origin?

Why is it ok for your body to be wrong, but we mustn't consider that your mind is wrong?

bejeezusWC · 31/05/2012 10:13

It is gaslighting
That person in that link is a man and an abusive man, at that

solidgoldbrass · 31/05/2012 10:16

I would be very tempted to say to that particular transactivist: the reason lesbians don't want to have sex with you has less to do with your genitals and more to do with the fact that you are a whiny, arrogant, self-righteous arsehole.

(Though I have to say that a decade or two back, it wasn't completely and utterly unknown for some lesbian separatist types to use emotional blackmail and bullying to overcome other women's resistance to having sex with them... there is no movement/class/oppressed group/social club that is free of self-righteous or predatory or generally toxic individuals).

Oncemoreintothe · 31/05/2012 10:28

Hmmm. Factcheckme is a really unbiased source.

She's a known Transphobe, the piece read to me as if it was written by one person.

Now I wonder who that could be?

ComradeJing · 31/05/2012 10:31

True SGB (about no movement bring free of bad people - I have no experience of lesbian separatists!)

Bejeezus, that's a really good point. The Transactivist says that it is anti-trans and trans misogynistic to deny a trans persons reality. Their reality possibly being that although he has a 100% male body but is 100% female.

If I had body dysmorphia and truly believed that I had the body of a super model could I claim discrimination if modelling agencies refused to hire me because that was how I felt inside?

SardineQueen · 31/05/2012 10:36

Erm well the conference is happening this year pleasureandpossibilities.com/programming/workshop-descriptions/ with a workshop as follows:

"Overcoming the Cotton Ceiling: Breaking Down Sexual Barriers for Queer Trans Women, with Morgan M Page

Overcoming the Cotton Ceiling will explore the sexual barriers queer trans women face within the broader queer women?s communities through group discussions and the hands-on creation of visual representations of these barriers. Participants will work together to identify barriers, strategize ways to overcome them, and build community. Open to all trans women and MAAB genderqueer folks."

Not only open to trans women and MAAB men ie FAAB women need not apply.

Assumption that blogger is making it all up is strange.

SardineQueen · 31/05/2012 10:37

NOTE only open

Not "not"

Duh

Must go out now Smile

ComradeJing · 31/05/2012 10:40

I think it started as a twitter conversation between redacted lesbian and redacted trans OnceMore but I've no idea where I got that idea from so admit it could be false.

Either way, it's an interesting point isn't it?

Are pre op, pre hormone therapy MTF Trans female bodied?

Is it transphobic to refuse to sleep with a MTF trans (or a woman with a penis) if you are a lesbian?

Nyac · 31/05/2012 10:41

"Note only open to trans women and MAAB men ie FAAB women need not apply."

It's OK to exclude women when men are discussing rape strategy!!!111!!!!!1

Nyac · 31/05/2012 10:42

It's not false.

Accusing women of lying is a common misogynistic tactic.

msrisotto · 31/05/2012 10:53

Fucking hell the cotton ceiling. I have learned something today. How unutterably horrific.

ComradeJing · 31/05/2012 11:02

Nyac (if your comment was aimed at me and not OnceMore) I meant my idea that it started as a twitter conversation could be false.

YY re accusing women of lying. It's why the We Believe You campaign is so important.

bejeezusWC · 31/05/2012 11:02

what is MAAB and FAAB?

Prolesworth · 31/05/2012 11:16

Male/Female Assigned At Birth

Nyac · 31/05/2012 11:27

I was addressing OnceMore ComradeJing. Not very clear there.

From a practical point of view, trans people need to be able to hand over documents that don't bring on hate crimes/abuse. And 'he' and 'she' are not words that I'm emotionally invested in.

[vomit] at cotton ceiling

Kim the fact that you have no understanding of the issues that biological women face is a good example of why trans politics do not have at all a good fit with feminist politics.
