I've recently found this corner of Mumsnet, probably following one of threads appearing on Discussions of the Day. - Probably around the time of International Women's Day. Thought about joining some of you for the London march - maybe next year !

But it seems to be a little bit hidden away to me, considering it's massive importance to women's well-being !

I know lots of you are pretty hot on campaigning ...

  • So how about a minor campaign to get MNHQ to mention Feminism more prominently.

eg. On the "popular threads" list
All the "product review" topics are listed at the bottom of the page FFS !
Surely women's rights are as important as the best choice of washing machine Wink

I like the proposal already mentioned for sub-sections:

Feminism and Women's Rights
Feminist Book Club
Feminist Meet-ups, Events and Activism

SugarSkyHigh · 22/03/2011 14:44

Perhaps if the whole thing was no longer called "feminism", because that can put some people off?

Why not just call it "Being A Woman."

and then have the various sub sections, minus the 'feminism and' or 'feminist whatever' prefixes.

This broadens it out. Of course, we all know it is feminism but some people are in denial that feminism is for them!

I thought most of MN was about being a parent.

I bet if it were called "Being a woman" or "women's issues" it would attract posts about dusting and worrying about your annual bikini diet.

I like it being explicitly feminist and I rather like it being a little bit off the radar. In the end it's nice to have a board where you don't have to start from feminist first principles every time you post anything. You might lose that if it went more mainstream.

David51 (Stand Up!) Smile

I'm not sure what your point is...I'm not arguing that feminism doesn't deserve a topic, much as pets or news or cookery or anything else deserves a topic.

I just don't see why it should become more prominent than the other non parenting related topic. After all, stating the obvious, the tagline is 'by parents for parents' not 'by adults for adults' or even 'by women for women'.

It's supposed to be for parenting, among other things. Affiliating with a political movement would be digressional and imo detrimental to the site's ethos.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 22/03/2011 16:51

I don't think it deserves to be more visible than other things with a similar level of traffic, it's just it's currently disproportionately INvisible on the topics page.

eg the whole of pets in total probably gets fewer posts than feminism, but Pets has a whole subheading, whereas feminism isn't even on the visible bit of Other Subjects, so people actually do have trouble finding it.

IngridBergmann · 22/03/2011 16:59

Fair enough then Smile

I do get why it seems a little underpromoted, most of us being women. But feminism isn't just being a woman. It's a political thing and not all women are interested in that approach. iyswim

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 22/03/2011 17:07

yes, and it doesn't need to be somewhere where people constantly can't help seeing it, just it would be nice to make it easier for people to find if they want to Smile

Thanks, SGM,

Good to know someone's flagged it up to HQ !

I should think they'd find it interesting to look through, as it contains a variety of views and good suggestions.

By the way - I posted a thread 'What is feminist parenting?' in Chat and got zero answers. Don't feminists stray beyond their designated area? Doesn't seem in the spirit of the thing!

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 24/03/2011 16:02

chat moves very fast. I think most of us hang out on a variety of topics but it's easy to miss something interesting on chat if you're not checking it all day.

you could try in Parenting. Or here!
