Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Higher profile on MN for Feminism ?

I've recently found this corner of Mumsnet, probably following one of threads appearing on Discussions of the Day. - Probably around the time of International Women's Day. Thought about joining some of you for the London march - maybe next year !

But it seems to be a little bit hidden away to me, considering it's massive importance to women's well-being !

I know lots of you are pretty hot on campaigning ...

  • So how about a minor campaign to get MNHQ to mention Feminism more prominently.

eg. On the "popular threads" list
All the "product review" topics are listed at the bottom of the page FFS !
Surely women's rights are as important as the best choice of washing machine Wink

Would love to see a link to it on the home page somewhere (even a teeny one). I was on mumsnet for months before I found this corner (and was so happy when I didGrin) - or, perhaps a women's liberation emoticon (can't remember who suggested it, but great idea) would preform a similar function.

Are we planning to pursue this? And are we happy with follwoing headings (from Ms Risotto/SGM)?

Introduce yourself
Parenting
Book club
Chat
Activism
Media
Violence against women

ps where would all the porn-related discussions go - under 'Media'?

FlamingoBingo · 21/03/2011 10:35

Can we not have 'introduce yourself' as a topic in it's own right? Maybe one for 'newbie questions' or FAQs' with links to good discussions about them...see message above (or below depending on how you read your MN threads! Grin)

If you don't like 'sex industry' how about 'Sexual politics'?

Or maybe 'Sex and relationships' - to include both nice & nasty (porn) aspects?

For starters, I would like to see the profile of this Feminism section being raised by adding it to the list of topics that are always displayed in the Talk Topics main menu, even if Feminism stays as part of "Other stuff".

yes, it needs to be more visible within Other Stuff - trouble is, it's not obvious to people that it will be in there the way it's obvious that dogs come under pets, for instance.

I agree we don't need separate topics, yet.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 21/03/2011 12:57

I'm not sure you could separate Activism, because activism so often emerges from discussion. You could have Events but there aren't yet that many of them.
the book clubs as a separate topic makes more sense because there are a regular 2 a month now and it would be quite handy for it to be easy to find the old ones, for when someone comes along and says 'Anybody read The Equality Illusion?' and you want to say 'yes, here.'

I meant specific campaigns emerging from discussion, like threads that start off 'Have you seen this advert?' or 'Have you seen this news story?' and by the end of the thread we are all complaining to the ASA/writing to our MPs.
But I guess in those cases a new thread can be started.

notenoughsocks · 21/03/2011 14:28

Just to add to two pence worth on the catergories thing.... I think that something that comes out of having it all under one section is how so many things in feminism (and women's lives) are interlinked.

I second that proposal

CrystalStair · 22/03/2011 09:47

Why more high profile? It's already there if you want to label yourself.

David51 · 22/03/2011 09:59

Crystal, some of us think it's too important to be stuck under 'Other stuff'. And a number of people have complained that it's invisible & they only found it by mistake.

Prolesworth, isnt feminism about gender politics?

Whereas I assume 'sexual politics'is about sex (i.e. doing it) - as opposed to gender
