Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Higher profile on MN for Feminism ?

I've recently found this corner of Mumsnet, probably following one of threads appearing on Discussions of the Day. - Probably around the time of International Women's Day. Thought about joining some of you for the London march - maybe next year !

But it seems to be a little bit hidden away to me, considering it's massive importance to women's well-being !

I know lots of you are pretty hot on campaigning ...

  • So how about a minor campaign to get MNHQ to mention Feminism more prominently.

eg. On the "popular threads" list
All the "product review" topics are listed at the bottom of the page FFS !
Surely women's rights are as important as the best choice of washing machine Wink

Thanks Prolesworth - Good to see there's someone else around to read my post !!

I agree. I can never remember which topic it is under, so tend to just stumble across Feminist threads. It should have a higher profile.

thefinerthingsinlife · 19/03/2011 12:54

I also agree with you. Do we just message MNHQ and ask them?

activate · 19/03/2011 12:55

I would prefer a lower profile

I find it ranty and annoyingly studenty

yama · 19/03/2011 12:55

Agree as well. I try to post every so often so that I can access through 'I'm On' posts.

David51 · 19/03/2011 13:00

I totally agree - Feminism should be a 'Topic' on the same level as Becoming a Parent, Being a Parent etc

However you would then need to come up with sub-topics so that the Feminism area works the same as the other areas (see any of the other higher-level Topics to see what I mean)

Possible sub-topics might include:

Book club
Activism
Media
Violence against women
Your rights at work
Porn & sex industry

...etc

Hi finerthings !

A simple plan would be several of us could send email to MNHQ over this weekend. Then perhaps they'd give it some thought on Monday at beginning of working week ?

MNHQ is easy to email. Can get their email by clicking "Contact us" Smile

I could hide the topic but not if you're starting a campaign to 'get MNWQ to mention Feminism more prominently"

jugglingjo · 19/03/2011 13:08

Oohh, that sounds like a good webchat !
Remind me what she's written ? I know it was one of the books you were planning to read and discuss in the Feminism book club ?

Blackduck · 19/03/2011 13:09

activate, thats rubbish and you know it. Even if it got a heading of its own you could still hid it, no one forces you to read and post.

AyeRobot · 19/03/2011 13:12

I try to be subversive and slip links to relevant threads from this board onto other threads. Loads of MNers have the Feminism board hidden, so gentle reminders that we don't talk about hating men might be useful.

feminism board is for all the campaigns and opinions that anyone is entitled to

the forum is for independent-minded, intelligent parents

I would object to any highly opinionated, toe-the-line or get out, we represent you and if you don't believe it you're wrong and thick group getting higher emphasis and 'mentioned more prominently"

so no it's not rubbish -the question was 'higher profile on MN for feminism' - my answer is NO THANKS

jugglingjo · 19/03/2011 13:18

I wouldn't worry to much StewieGriffinsMom - though it's obviously nice if everyone interested gets to hear about it.

From recent webchats it seems you only really need a dozen or so MNers to post and join in to get a pretty decent discussion going.

Eazzy Peazzy !Grin ( Though getting hold of the book and reading it before Friday could be more tricky !)

To be fair, maybe we should also have an Anti-Feminism forum where activate & like-minded friends could go

Albrecht · 19/03/2011 13:21

SGM yes I think it would help to have it in Active convos to get more people's attention.

jugglingjo · 19/03/2011 13:22

Feminism is for every woman !

  • And I certainly haven't noticed this group to be especially "thick"

Au contraire ! ( Though I'm on dangerous ground here, attempting French spelling ! LOL )

OP posts:
activate · 19/03/2011 13:22

Yes of course I'm anti-feminist now aren't I? I couldn't just have an independent opinion about the mode of discussions on the MN feminism board could I? Grin

jugglingjo - by no means do I think the individuals who enjoy posting on here are thick

I suppose I should have put the punctuation in my line as follows: I would object to any "highly opinionated, toe-the-line or get out, we represent you and if you don't believe it you're wrong and thick" group getting higher emphasis and 'mentioned more prominently'

hope that helps

jugglingjo · 19/03/2011 13:26

David reveals his true colours !

He wants to promote a high profile Anti-Feminism forum !

We should have known ... He is a man !

I'm joking of course Grin
