TMI - Fibroids and HUGE period blood clot

My periods have been getting heavier, and eventually a couple of scans revealed 1 have two fibroids, one inside my womb, and they're growing.

My consultant said we can watch and wait.

The last 2 months my periods had got slightly lighter. But this month is bad again. It started last Friday with a "normal" period. Then it lightened up. This afternoon it got heavier again, but it's bright red blood, not like "period" blood.

I've had a couple of large clots. Then just now I went to the loo and the BIGGEST thing you've ever seen fell out of me. It looked like raw liver. It was about 6cm long, and not all flat, but more rounded. Like a ball of liver. I've never given birth so this has to be the biggest thing that's ever come out of me. It was unreal.

What the fuck do I do?

Do I call someone? I'm really scared.

I rang 111 and they're going to get the out of hours GP to call me in the next two hours.

I'm really scared. I nearly kept the clot, but it was so messy I didn't. I'd been pressing loo paper against my bits, so I just caught it in my hand. It was so big.

Oh OP, that does sound a bit scary. I can't give any advice, but offer a hand-hold. I hope a GP can call you soon and help you.

Update! 111 got a GP to call me and she sent to me the local hospital for a check up. The Dr there was lovely and really reassuring. It's just a blood clot.

I'm to see my own GP and get the Mirena coil, and discuss my other options. I'm also to take my Transmexic or whatever it's called Acid stuff to limit the bleeding.

As I'm 47, the menopause is on the horizon, which will cure this, so I could just wait it out.

But, I'll live. 🤞🏻

I get them this size. I warn you now, tranemaxic acid (or whatever it is called) works by clotting the blood so I have huge ones, sometimes the size of a tangerine.

@Temporaryanonymity Yes! This was like a tangerine. I'd taken a couple of Acid things a few days ago - did that cause this?

I don't know what to do, really. Can I have the coil with fibroids still in situ? Or should I try and have them taken out first?

I was planning on just watching and waiting, but I can't cope with this. It's horrible.

It’s bloody (‘scuse the pub) awful isn’t it, I really do sympathise. I’m currently on blood thinners and my periods, as well as resulting in something that wouldn’t look out of place in the movie Carrie, have been presenting me with blood clots the size and shape of slugs (sorry all - rather graphic) and indeed the consistency of raw liver.

I hope they settle down for you, or they deal with the root cause (the fibroids I guess?) soon.

Yes I think that is the cause. I use a mooncup so you can imagine it gets full quickly. The cup has taught me that the colour and consistency of the blood varies each day of my period. It's red red some days, dark almost black towards the end.

It's that hideous feeling when they cone out too. shudder!I was talking to DS2 the other day and had to stop mid-sentence because I suddenly felt this weird sensation...

I really wish I'd name-changed for this.

Do you always bleed a lot with fibroids? I'm having a scan for them on Saturday but it's not one of my symptoms (currently)

@KatyMac I think it depends where the fibroids are. They can be inside the womb and that increases the whole surface area of the womb, leading to heavier and much longer periods.

Or they can be inside the lining or on the outside wall, which causes different symptoms.

You do not have to cope with this!!!

I'm a year younger than you and had a hysterectomy 18 months ago because of fibroids. I had the Mirena which worked for a short while, but the fibroids kept growing and pushed it out of the way. Tranexamic acid does help but can only do so much.

I quite frankly got so ill and so fucked off with the flooding, the changing tampons every hour and still needing to use a towel too, the anaemia, the general shit-ness of it all.

Hysterectomy is the end of hte line when it comes to treatment but I'm so glad I did it and I'm so glad I don't have periods any more. Are you really prepared to put up with this for another decade.

Back to the GP. Ask for a gynae referral. Explore your options. Don't be fobbed off with the "it's normal" stuff. Good luck.

The main symptom of fibroids is bastard periods!

Hmm my periods are not awful at all - a bit clotty and 3-4 days - with bleeding mid month, but that's quite light

My gynae bloke said I could have a hysterectomy only after they'd tried the coil and maybe a smaller op first, as it's harder to get hysterectomies agreed to by the NHS now. But yes, I'd love one I think.

These periods are wiping me out every month. It takes so long to feel normal again and then boom, all that blood gone and back to feeling exhausted, washed out, and paranoid about flooding through my clothes.

Ive been there - palm-sized clots and flooding. The clots are because you're bleeding so much that it is clotting before you get to pass it. Ive tried varying treatments at different times - resection via hysteroscopy, Esmya to shrink the fibroids, mirena coil, tranexamic acid and norothisterone. Esmya was great as it was temporary menopause but the max they allow for that was 6 months. It finally got under control after having a uterine fibroid embolisation followed by another mirena coil - it was bloody painful op but gave me light to normal periods for around 2 years before i started to grow new fibroids, which felt worth it to me. Hope your gp gives you a good gynae referral and lots of treatment options!

@KatyMac You might have them in s place that doesn't cause so much bleeding? Mine are right inside the womb, which means they don't hurt (touch wood) but they do bleed.

It's good you're getting a scan. Be prepared, they use the wand that goes up your fanny! And they are VERY thorough.

How was the op painful?

You really need a hysterectomy and you need to start iron tablets straight away. Your haemoglobin should be around 120-150. Once it is under 100
I had a hysterectomy last year at 46.
I was put on tranexemic acid, norethisterone, then some huge injection for 6 months to shrink the fibroid. Nothing worked. I ended up needing a blood transfusion for the blood loss
You must get an urgent gynae referral. I should have had a hysterectomy 2 years earlier than I did. I had it laparoscopically, best thing I ever did.
