I know I've been hogging the boards the last few days, but I don't care :P Just been curious on other peoples opinions on things.

I didn't know where to put this, so I apologise if it's in the wrong category.

I was wondering what everyones favourite Urban Legend/Cautionary Tale was. I have been fascinated in them for pretty much forever, due to so many meanings and of course expressing the nations fears.

So what are your favourites? Feel free to share the UL with us! :)

We used to have the crying boy picture in our house I'm the 70s/80s. It went on a skip because it was fugly considered bad luck.

I also have a large black dog but he's a bastard and more likely to steal your kebab than see you home safely

Creepy story 1:

I once lived in a ground floor flat in south London. One really hot Sat afternoon I'd been out at a local pub garden. Came back about 8pm for a nice bath and a bit of telly. Got out of bath, felt a bit hot and sleepy. I remember going into the bedroom and opening the sash window a couple of inches. Sat on the bed and started reading Grazia in my towel to dry off a bit. Dozed off....

Woke up a few hours later (lights on, towel had fallen off) as the wood blind in my bedroom was clanking in the frame. Glanced over as I thought the wind had picked up a bit and saw a pair of gloved hands, one holding a stone candle holder from my windowsill, the other trying to slip the catch on the inside window (I had secondary upvc glazing to block out the noise and cold).

I was clearly visible from the window. I panicked and pretended to shout for someone in the other room in a really angry voice. The hands went back out. I grabbed my towel up and ran to the window and slammed it really hard. Ran to the door and double locked it.

Called 999 and was told it was a peak time and I'd have to wait 45minutes for a response. I was terrified to go outside incase someone was waiting in the open hallway. I had already screamed at the top of my voice and no one had tried my door or called to me. Both my neighbours were in their 80's anyhow, so not much help.

My best friend didn't answer her phone...so I just sat in the locked house waiting for the police with a knife. Sad

The police came 2 hours later.....

Possibly the scariest thing I've ever read on MN was the person on the paranormal thread in AIBU who had been trapped in her bedroom while someone/something banged around downstairs, and heard a man laughing while she was on the phone to the police... absolutely terrifying. I'm looking for the link.

DeathByChocolate01 · 11/08/2012 23:22

Here's the thread - copied and pasted the post I'm on about:

Aw.I missed a spooky Friday night thread.
Ill tell you what ive posted before.
22yrs ago was living in an ordinary semi with my 2 boys 1 and 3.Had been burgled a few months earlier so was nervy.I often heard running about upstairs as did others,my babysitter used to check dc's adn they were fast asleep.
One night i was seeing out a friend and the running noise came from upstairs,he looked over my shoulder and said "whats that" i explained i often heard it and he seemed reluctant to leave me.
I went to bed and could hear all sorts of banging downstairs so was led awake holding my breath.Ds 3 then runs in and snuggles up with me.Everytime this noise occurrs he moves closer.Realising this was not my imagination i called 999 and the operator told me he was sending a van full of police,i was crying so he offered to stay on the line. The phone suddenly went dead and then a mans voiced laughed. Hysterical i was screaming downm the phone when the op came back on,he asked if i had a downstairs phone and i said i did,he advised me to get against the door until the police arrived,he sadi he had heard a man laugh too.I was literally beside myself, the baby was asleep in next room and i was torn betwee getting him and opening the door as i had ds1 with me.
The police arrived and it took them a bout 20mins to persuade me to open the door, they refused to break it down. I ran down with a bseball bat (id been burgled remember)and let them in. There was no sign of any break in and the phone had not been tampered with. I went to my Mums for the night with ds's. Things continued to happen there for many years but never that bad,i got remarried so was alittle less scary with dh around.
One night we came in from a bbq at around midnight. The ds's were at my mujms and we went staright to sleep (bit drunk)
The following morning the wardrobes in the ds's room were in the middle of the room and were twisted and broken. My neighbour later complained to me about the terrible banging that had been coming from the ds's room at around 2am!!!!!!!

Absolutely nothing Lord, no witnesses, I hadn't seen a face, or even any skin or clothing, just a pair of leather gloves. They put a Tesco carrier over the window frame and secured it with some masking tape I had handy incase of any fingerprints. They checked outside and there was no one about and left me a leaflet for victim support. Forensics turned up about 8 days later and dusted the sill but there was nothing.

I tell myself it was a chancer trying to steal the candle holder (it was a really nice one from the Conran Shop I had been given as a leaving present from a previous job) and they were trying to get it through the window IYSWIM.

When I moved in I was painting the living room and I left side window open for ventilation. I went to the kitchen to wash a paintbrush and came back to find half my paltry set of tools that i had left on the window sill missing. I hadn't meant to leave the bedroom one open, I'd fallen asleep in daylight and it must have slipped my mind.

My little car had its roof slashed and the radio ripped out twice in 3 years, and an ex had the headlights ripped clean out of his car. Thieves would hide by an alarmed car at 3 or 4am and move or disturb it to start the alarm. They would keep doing this until residents just deactivated the car alarms. Then they were free to plunder the goods.

Disturbingly my flat was right on the South Circular, one of the busiest roads in Sarrrf Lundun!!

Gah, I've started reading that paranormal thread now, this one has creeped me, as did Thursdays scary toys, thinking about that window thing (although it was 14 years ago) and now bloody Childs Play has just come on.

And I live in a house that's like 60 per cent glass.

And I can't remember if I locked the door downstairs.

Why do we do this?

Lemarchand a friend of mine made a model of the "box". I wouldn't even touch it. Shock silly huh? Too afraid of a visit from the Theologians of the Order of the Gash! Same as saying Candyman in the mirror, I wouldn't do that either!

He made a "Pinhead" and "Chatterer" too, was bloody good actually.

I caught Hellraiser 3 on the Horror channel the other night. DH stared at me dumbfounded as I quoted the script word for word along with the film. Tragically forgot how many times we watched those films as students! Loved Doug Bradley, and Clive Barker novels. Was a bit of my life before DH I never mentioned.

Shame none of my studies sank in as easily.....
