Anyone else started running when overweight?

I weigh 11st and have just started running. I'm on week 3 of a running programme and I'm really enjoying it.

I am doing this as I need to lose weight and get fitter.

Has anyone else done this?
Did you lose lots of weight and did you manage to lose the baby belly through running alone?

I managed a small run and Davina DVD today. Felt very tired today, and had early night last night. Think it was sundays late night, DH and I stupidly stayed up to watch 'Revolver' what a mistake that was, rubbish!

Must have another earlish night tonight just can't cope with late ones anymore.

Food consumption has been good, GoLower has brought out some new fish dishes so been trying those out over the last couple of days, very yummy

Kryptik · 17/03/2010 09:30

Well done Deirdreb and Simmo. Looks like you're doing well on exercise and diet.
Shame Revolver was rubbish. I've never heard of it. Is it a film?

My leg still hurts! I am so gutted. I think its going to take another week to fully recover. I really, really miss running. I can't do anything else as my leg is quite painful. I can do some sit ups but thats probably about it!

Seeing as I'm not exercising, I'm being very strict with my diet.

Please send leg healing vibes my way

Delurking to say thanks to kryptic for the podcast links. I downloaded the C25K app this morning and it was brilliant! Ran along to my own music with the bloke interrupting me so often to tell me when to run and when to walk.

It was FAB! Thankyou!

simmo39 · 17/03/2010 20:07

Yes it was a Guy Ritchie film. Mananged the school run today and walked the dog, was gonna do Davina tonight but feel a bit rough. Got a bit of a dodgy tummy, and really craving for a glass of wine

Kryptik - sending you healing vibes ~~~~~~~~

bibbitybobbityhat · 17/03/2010 20:27

Hello!

I am 2 and a half stone overweight and have started a running programme (the one that begins with run for a minute, walk for two minutes).

I also have an ankle held together with screws and plates after a fracture 13 years ago, so am a little bit ginger about running!

However, I want to lose weight without having to adjust my diet too much (as its already pretty good).

I am also trying to inspire my dh who needs to lose at least 3 stone and has high cholesterol.

So I will lurk and post along with you ladies, if thats ok .

simmo39 · 17/03/2010 20:40

Hi BBHat - welcome and good luck with the running. What sort of diet do you follow?

bibbitybobbityhat · 17/03/2010 20:52

Just a healthy diet, heavy on the vegetables and salads, light on sugar (I have a very un-sweet tooth).

I'm one of those people who has gained 1lb a year since the age of 30 and is now somewhat overweight, rather than someone who yo-yos and obsesses about weight and either diets or binges.

After my second child was born I couldn't quite lose the last 5lb.

Then, 18 months ago, I gave up smoking - that has resulted in another 10lb on.

Add those all up = 30lb or a little more overweight.

I think this happens to an awful lot of middle aged people, actually. The weight creeps on without them eating grossly or yo-yo dieting or whatever.

simmo39 · 17/03/2010 21:04

I am on a LC diet that requires no exercise to lose weight, in 7 weeks have lost 27 1/2 lb but I have started exercising recently. Mainly to improve my fitness but I am also concerned about having excess skin after I lose all my weight.
I agree that as you get older (I am 40 in 3 weeks! ) it is harder to lose weight. Eat less move about more is the government line, but after starting this diet I don't necessarily agree with that anymore.
Lucky you to have a very un-sweet tooth that can only be a good thing.
Best of luck, post how you get on.

LittlePushka · 18/03/2010 13:56

Just checking into the locker room ladies,...adjusting me shoes, will be with you for a chat a little later!

DeirdreB · 18/03/2010 15:45

Welcome LittlePushka.

slug · 18/03/2010 15:53

Hi All. Am now on week 6 of the couch to 5k programme. I'm 15 stone very overweight, but console myself that I've been that way since I was in my early 20s. I was this weight when I gave up playing A grade sport and took up triathlons instead because they were easier on my ankles. Some of us are just born to be large.

simmo39 · 18/03/2010 20:40

Haven't mangaed a run again! And don't think I will do Davina now in my PJ's But have started to do sit ups every night as that is my most problomatic area. Think will have to shut the dog out as he thinks me laying on the floor is his signal to jump on me and lick my face

LittlePushka · 19/03/2010 02:47

OK team,...so its more model, less waddle then? I'm is loving these tales! Some of your posts are so funny and they all strike home!

Pushka is also booked on GNR 19th Sept and the goal is to acheive 0-5mph in nine months.

I would LOVE to finish it comfortably (ie without expiring!) and to then be able to say,
" Run? Oh yeah, I run half marathons for fun me"

how cool would that be?

Friday night is waddle night,...so must get to bed. See you tomorrow after the near-death experience.

Kryptik · 19/03/2010 09:26

Hi Bibbity, Pushka and Slug. Hi others too

I'm still out of running though my leg is starting to feel better now. Maybe I should lose a bit more weight first before I subject my knees to all that pounding

I'm doing situps and watching what I eat. I've decided to eat nothing after 7pm (unless its a social thing)
I used to really pick in the evenings and mid afternoon. I have a low fat yogurt and a banana mid afternoon which really fills me up and am just going cold turkey after dinner.

morning all

just checking in as it's been a while - had the most spectacular bad luck which means I've achieved zero runs since my last post. Just as my cold seemed to be getting better dd came down with it too and was running a very high fever together with projectile vomitting and a poorly tummy . She's only just on the mend now. My cold resurfaced as a head cold and all my sinuses have been blocked culminating in a perforated eardrum on tuesday night - I know! the pain was excruitiating. Still can't hear properly and it's still blocked and a bit sore, so no running for me. Arrrgggh. Gutted on so many levels. Am off on my hols next thursday so looks like I'll just have to front it out in the bikini as I am. Oh well, hopefully when I come back (half a stone heavier no doubt) I'll be raring to go and you won't see me for dust .

Everyone else seems to be doing really well - keep up the good work ladies!

BattyKoda · 19/03/2010 11:10

Hello...have just come across this thread, can I join?

I started dragging myself round the estate running a few weeks ago. It's killing me and I'm not doing it nearly as much as I should. I have also been dieting and doing the Wii fit for a couple of months. My start weight was 10st1lb and I'm now 9st6lb...I want to get closer to 8st7lb for my wedding.

LittlePushka · 19/03/2010 21:03

OK team Pushka's Top Training Tip No. 1....running in the half light/dusk/dark means hills do not count as hills because you cant see them coming you do not feel them so much. Give it a go it really works. Free hills, bargain

Hello BattyKoda! I am laughing at your post, thinking of you staggering about the streets with a fixed look thinking about your gorgeous frock

BattyKoda · 19/03/2010 21:12

I dangle it in front of me, like a carrot on a string

Thanks for the tip I might try to get out in the morning for a quick jog, haven't been for about a week.

LittlePushka · 19/03/2010 21:39

Kryptik, bit of personal training for you here from Pushka; if you are injured you still HAVE to run...you need to get the index and middle fingers of your normal crisp-eating hand and make them run up and down the arm of the sofa. MAKE SURE you do a can-can type warm up for 30 seconds and try not to break a nail. Be careful out there...

simmo39 · 19/03/2010 23:19

no run today but did Davina tonight all the way through, what an exciting way to spend a Friday night! DH has gone out on the beer, reminded him of all the calories he will consume but didn't faze him one bit. He even bought a double pack of bacon today in preparation for his hangover cure in the morning Still I can partly join him on that one, will have eggs with mine instead of bread.
So a 5 lb loss this week for me, yeah! Very very happy with myself, and also a little bit scared that I will keep this up.

Kryptik - very disciplined not eating after 7 pm. Evenings are my worst time for picking and I just don't think I could go without. Had 2 pieces of dark chocolate tonight and a small bowl of peanuts to pick at, eating them one at a time very slowly. Amamzing how long they can last that way

Battykoda - when is your wedding?

Kryptik · 20/03/2010 09:42

Littlepushka

I sooooo want to run! Dh went for a run this am and I was so
I think I'm going to go for a brisk walk tomorrow am but thats all I can do at the moment.
I have a Davina dvd too but I don't think I can attempt that til next week.

I'm glad you're all doing so well.
5lbs Simmo! Thats fantastic.

Keep going everyone!
