Anyone else started running when overweight?

Kryptik · 24/02/2010 14:43

I weigh 11st and have just started running. I'm on week 3 of a running programme and I'm really enjoying it.

I am doing this as I need to lose weight and get fitter.

Has anyone else done this?
Did you lose lots of weight and did you manage to lose the baby belly through running alone?

urgh! look at this that I found via another thread ...

incentive!

dd off nursery today as she's a little under the weather, luckily dp is coming home from work early so I'm definately going out running again, esp after seeing that pic.

pelvic floor! god didn't even think of that, mine usually fails me on a trampoline but so far so good with the running - at snails pace at the moment though so time will tell

Kryptik · 04/03/2010 11:24

Ugh thanks for that MissWoowoo.
Definitely an incentive!

I was obssessive about doing my pelvic floor exercises while pregnant so, touch wood, they're holding up well. Just start exercising them now. Its never too late

I didn't run yesterday as dh said I still sounded ill. I was a bit bunged up but felt ok. I'm definitely going tonight!

Oh what an incentive! On one hand it makes me feel good about the 18lbs I have lost so far, on the other makes me feel ashamed about the remaining 60+ left to go

Have been lazy today no walk to school and no run, but have been good with my eating stuck to all my Go Lower meals. Had a new batch delivered today they look yummy!

Tomorrow is a new day and I will go for a run and am hoping my Davina DVD arrives. Quite looking forward to getting it and giving it a go.

After 2 emergency c sections there is one plus - pelvic floor is ok

Kryptik · 05/03/2010 09:46

I went for my run yeterday. I did 4min run/2min very brisk walk.
It was hard going but I was glad when I finished.

Does anyone else get a really dry throat? Mine gets so dry, I almost gag if I try to swallow without a drink.
It just means I have to keep sipping water but wondered if anyone else gets that?

I weighed myself this morning too and have lost a lb. Not great but its a start. Besides after seeing that picture, I know its still good

morning all

hey simmo, look at the weight loss this way: you're a 1/4 of the way there, or you've already lost 25% of the weight you want to lose. That's a MASSIVE achievement don't lose sight of that and do what I did - I lost 23lbs last year but over the winter months put 9lbs back. Pulled myself together last month (mostly) on the eating front so now my overall loss is 20lbs and have been kicking myself at the time I wasted. Still, I've got a grip now and that's why I've started the exercise. Got out for a run yesterday, found it harder than tuesday but got through the 30 minutes at w1/r2. It's at a total snailspace (I can tell as I'm not getting the dry mouth issue like you Kryptik) but it's a start. I've also got a Davina DVD collecting dust on the shelf so am going to try doing some of that next week too.

Great run Kryptik! I'm out again tomorrow.

Romilly70 · 06/03/2010 11:10

Simmo, definitely a good idea to get proper running trainers. (Also make sure they are one size larger than your usual shoes, otherwise the pressure on your toenails bruises then and they can snap off... - they do grow back! the laces will keep your trainers tightly on your feet.)

I used to go to Run & Become near victoria station in London. I also went to Pro-feet in Fulham to get some resin insoles for inside my trainers because I pronated so badly.

Also, not sure if this is an issue, but on top of a sparts bra, I used to wear crop top as well to sort of squash my (f cup) boobs against my chest, so they didn't move as it can be very painful....

MissWooWoo · 06/03/2010 12:57

managed another 30 min walk/run this morning - feeling really pleased that I've got off to a good start.

How's everyone else doing?

simmo39 · 06/03/2010 21:29

Yes I get dry throat too, I think its from all the panting I do. (I sound like a dog!) Gonna get one of those drink bottles that you hold like a hand weight. Will look more the part as well then!

Thanks for your support MissWooWoo, you are doing well with your running. Went for one today, was quite nice the sun was shining. Went round our town park with the dog, lots of other runners there, lots of them over weight too so I didn't feel out of place at all. Many of them were panting too!

Kryptik · 07/03/2010 17:14

Lol at panting! I wasn't aware I was panting
I think its because I breathe through my mouth.

I went for a run this morning at 9.30 am and it was freezing! I so regretting starting but that feeling you get when you finish is so worth it

Well done ladies. You're all doing brilliantly

Help!!! I need motivation. Stuck on the sofa at the moment watching Eastenders. Must go out for a run as haven't been out of the house at all today. Been busy making a birthday cake for DH with DS, like I am gonna have a slice!

DeirdreB · 08/03/2010 20:19

Get off the sofa simmo!!

DeirdreB · 08/03/2010 20:21

Did that help? Just a quick run round the block will make you feel better. Must get off own backside and tidy up the kitchen!!

Well done for planning not to have any cake!! I find that really hard, also not licking the bowl, etc.

simmo39 · 08/03/2010 21:09

I'm still stuck! But didn't lick the bowl earlier so I get brownie points for that surely. Just been quite lazy today DS didn't want to go out and it was just easier to stay in and bake.
Tomorrow I will do it as will be up and out early as walking DS to school and that is a good 20 mins each way. So will get over an hours walking in tomorrow.
Gonna chase up my Davina DVD now as still not arrived, ordered a week ago!

MissWooWoo · 09/03/2010 08:59

I too am stuck on the sofa since coming down with a cold at the weekend. Am really annoyed! No way I can get out for a run today but am hoping I will be up to it by Thursday. Healthy eating seems to have gone to pot, am I the only person who eats when they have a cold? buttery crumpets and pear tarts combat germs doncha know

simmo39 · 09/03/2010 20:53

ok back on track with the exercise today, did my school walks and managed a 30 minute run tonight.
Had a LC Roast tonight as DH birthday, was so nice that I could have loads of meat and not worry about it. No potatoes though but to be honest getting used to it now.
I avoided the chocolate cake DS and I made yesterday. Was incredibly hard and left the room whilst they ate it. But very proud of myself.

Kryptik · 10/03/2010 17:08

Sorry to hear you're ill MissWoowoo. Hope you can get back into it soon! I remember feeling really frustrated when I couldn't run!

Well done Simmo! You should be proud of yourself. That sounds like a good run. How much weight have you lost?

I did a run yesterday and can now do 6min intervals quite comfortably I am so chuffed.
I never thought I'd get to this stage.
I've been careful with food as well and am not have any carbs in the evening. I can't do LC as I hate eggs and can't really face meat and fish twice a day so I've decided to no carbs after lunch.
Hopefully the weight will be dropping off soo

simmo39 · 10/03/2010 20:39

Kryptik - 23 1/2 pounds so far so starting to notice. Just need to keep with the exercise to tone up and also want to be healthy and not huffing and puffing just going upstairs.
Sounds like you are getting fit now doing 6 min intervals, well done. I am sure the weight will drop off, espcially as you are watching your carb intake too.
Davina dvd arrived today so am logging off soon to give it a go, hope I can walk in the morning!

MissWooWoo · 11/03/2010 14:20

still full of cold here so no chance of a run today - can't believe how pee'd off about it I am! That's a good sign though.

Well done Kryptik 6 minute intervals is fab - how long has it taken you to get up to that level?

and yay! simmo for getting out there again

Kryptik · 11/03/2010 14:37

Oh no poor you MissWoowoo! Though its definitely a good sign. You do get hooked on it.

Its taken me 4-5 weeks to get here. Apparently, I'll be able to run a full 5km in another 3-4 weeks

I'm hoping to go for another run this evening. I'm going to do 6min intervals again.

I really need to lose weight though. I've got a few weeks for ds1's birthday party and I'd love to have lost a noticable amount of weight by then. I don't want to keep having fat photos

OP posts:
simmo39 · 11/03/2010 20:55

Poor you MissWooWoo hope you get better soon, you have done well to not go for a run as I have heard that if you are ill it just pumps the virus round your body more. Wonder if I will ever reach the stage of missing exercise...?

Kryptik - with all that exercise you are bound to lose weight, do you find the running also helps to tone you up?

I have done over an hours walking on school run today and Davina DVD all the way through. Starting to feel a bit stiff now.
Gonna weight myself tomorrow, fingers crossed!!!!!!

Kryptik · 12/03/2010 10:39

Well done on doing the dvd!
How was your weigh in? I have lost a lb. I need to start being a bit stricter.
I found that when I first started running, I wanted to eat more but I don't feel like that anymore.

I am gutted as I hurt my leg doing my run yesterday. Its blardy painful at times.
I hope I recover soon!

OP posts:
simmo39 · 12/03/2010 21:43

Well done on your lb loss, sorry to hear you have an injury what do you think you have done, no permament damage I hope?

Was gonna do Davina again today, but I am in agony, legs hurt, stomach feels like I have been kicked in it. Guess it was to be expeted haven't done any real exercise for a long time. Will do again tomorrow though, hoping to do all the way through again as DH has said he will take out DS so should have time to do it all the way through.

Weigh in was good, 4 lb loss so that is now 27 1/2 in just 7 weeks. I had obviously researched this diet (Golower) before I jointed up to it but must say I am chuffed just how successful it is proving.

Going to a 40th birthday party tomorrow night, will have a couple of G&T's to celebrate

simmo39 · 15/03/2010 21:16

How's everyone, did you you all have a good weekend?

DeirdreB · 15/03/2010 21:47

I've just been out for a great run but was very disappointed to find it was less far than I thought. Boo. Now just to make it out more often...
