Anyone else started running when overweight?

I weigh 11st and have just started running. I'm on week 3 of a running programme and I'm really enjoying it.

I am doing this as I need to lose weight and get fitter.

Has anyone else done this?
Did you lose lots of weight and did you manage to lose the baby belly through running alone?

I am sopmewhere between 11 and 12 stone (probably closer to 12) and wanting to get back to 10ish stone and a size 12, to fit my pre baby clothes again!

I went running fir the second time this week - it is hard to make myself go but once I am out there I enjoy it.

I feel okish after today's session - last time i felt like I'd been kicked by a mule.

It is good to hear about other people's progress.

keep on keeping on!

Kryptik · 26/02/2010 22:09

MrsSawdust I'd be thrilled to keep this thread going. I'm sure it would be very motivating.
Google 'running posture' and you'll get loads of info like this
eu.dummies.com/how-to/content/sizing-up-your-running-posture.html

I went for a run today and managed to do intervals of 3mins running/2mins brisk walking and one of 4. I'm struggled a bit at the beginning because I think I'm still recovering from my cold.

I started running on 2nd Jan when I was 6 weeks postnatal with dc3 and about 2.5 stone overweight. I was doing 3-4 runs a week throughout Jan, but a few weeks of illness have scuppered it a bit. I've been out once this week and am hopeful for the weekend.

I've lost about 18lb so far, but am also calorie counting and bf. I definitely feel more toned, especially around the middle .

simmo39 · 27/02/2010 21:19

Thanks DeidraB - Am bidding for a Davina DVD on ebay, if I don't win one this weekend then will go out and buy it on Monday whilst I am feeling motivated to do this!
Haven't gone for a run yet, rained all day here today and still raining now and just don't fancy doing my first attempt in the rain, it might put me off going again!
I hope people don't laugh at overweight runners you're probably right Kryptik just me being over sensitive!

MrsSawdust · 28/02/2010 09:47

Goddammit I haven't lost any weight despite doing 6 runs in 2 weeks!

My problem is eating too much

Really didn't feel like running this morning (especially after getting on the scales) but made myself do it anyway.

At least I can spend the rest of the day basking in runner's pride

nighbynight · 28/02/2010 10:20

I am an overweight runner too.

I think running does help with weight loss, but it is not as simple as eat normally, go running, lose weight.
I have a very sedentary job, where I seem to use about one peanut's worth of calories every day. So if I starve myself eat sensible, small meals and no chocolate, and run, then I lose weight faster.
Also, I have noticed that I seem to be a bit thinner than last year, despite weighing the same. Maybe I have gained some muscle??

Another benefit of running, is that if I am having one of those days where I want to cram the entire fridge into my mouth, going running tends to change that.
Or if I am a bit down, a run will usually get me feeling more positive again, and less likely to comfort eat.

I lost about 4kg last year, so not a huge amount, but am hoping to carry on this year.

Wasnt there a huge survey published last year in teh states, where they followed the health of runners and non runners over about 20 years, and found huge health benefits in the runners group? IIRC, the non runners caused a few data collection problems, because too many of them inconveniently died during the 20 years.

nighbynight · 28/02/2010 10:23

Sorry, the 4kg was over the whole year - I lost a lot after christmas 2008, then put some back on again, then lost it again - thats what I meant when I said I was comparing the same weights.

Naetha · 28/02/2010 13:32

I've just started running (first run nearly killed me - I forgot I have asthma!) and I'm 5'8 and 13 stone.

I'm just trying to take it easy at the moment, combining running with badminton and Davina now and again.

I'm going to properly start running in earnest (using Couch to 5k routine) when the clocks change and I can see that I'm not running in dog shit.

Race for Life signed up for in June

DeirdreB · 28/02/2010 14:32

This thread is really motivating me - now just to get out of the house and run, am going to try to increase for once a week!!

Mrs Sawdust How long ago since your last baby? Knees can remain soft for a while after pregnancy, depends also if you are breastfeeding. I have run after all three babies and while breastfeeding but with number three my knees were not ready as soon as they were after number two.

nighbynight Your post is great about the other benefits of running. I'm sure you have improved your muscle tone, hopefully you will have more weightloss this year.

Naetha Breathing technique can be really helpful for asthma and running. There are great success stories using the Buteyko technique, lots on line about it, book www.amazon.co.uk/Close-Your-Mouth-Buteyko-Breathing/dp/0954599616/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=126 7366877&sr=1-1here

MrsSawdust · 28/02/2010 17:29

DeirdreB that's interesting. It's 18 months since I had dd but I am still breastfeeding several times a day. I find that my knees are sore inbetween runs (particularly coming down stairs) and they hurt at the start of a run but they do settle down during the run iyswim.

Brollyflower · 28/02/2010 20:07

Thanks to this thread I managed mu run yesterday and actually enjoyed it a little bit. Achy today though.

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 01/03/2010 07:50

Coming back to second the Buteyko recommendation - I did a course a few years ago and by the second week people were claiming amazing improvements.

simmo39 · 01/03/2010 21:13

Did it! Am so proud of myself i went out for a run today
Managed to run for a bit them did some fast power walking. Have worked out a small circuit round the roads where i live and will try to increase every 3 days.
My eating is still going ok on my LC diet so the running I hope will help me tone up.
Have ordered Davina DVD today so that should come later this week.
Feeling very motivated thanks everyone

DeirdreB · 01/03/2010 21:29

Well done you!! Keep it up. I've been out tonight and feel great!!

DuchessOfAvon · 02/03/2010 08:32

I went out last night in my horrifically expensive new trainers and my knees still hurt.

I am finding it hard to keep going when I'm petrified about doing some damage. I may need to see the GP for a physio referal.

And I still have nearly 2 stone to lose. Waaah!

MissWooWoo · 02/03/2010 11:31

I was meant to start exercising at the weekend but got trapped in the sofa

Finding this thread very inspiring and am going to get my kit on right now so that I can go straight to the park after I drop dd off at nursery.

Am 13 stone, 5 ft 7, would like to get back to 10 stone (size 12 for me)

It's a beautiful day and I have a holiday coming up so no more excuses!

MissWooWoo · 02/03/2010 14:05

well, I'm back from my run! Really enjoyed it and so glad I did it.

Managed a 30 minute stint of walk 2/run 2. Feel positively glowing!

Next run Thursday ... actually can't wait

MissWooWoo · 02/03/2010 14:08

sorry that was walk 1/run 2

Romilly70 · 02/03/2010 19:17

I have run on & off (more off than on) for about the last 7 years.

I was a heffalump when i started about 12 stone at 5'6" but got down to about 10st 4lb within about a year

At first, I didn't bother about what I ate, (building up to) running 5 miles about 3 times a week. It is quite normal on your first session to run for exactly 60 seconds and feel like you want to die.

I found doing the race for life 5k as a target (mainly walked it) was a good incentive. Later i joined a running club.

I got to 10st 10lb and needed to go to weight watchers for about 2 months to shift the last 6lbs.

Anyway, the years & pounds have crept back on, am back up to Heffalump weight, and TTC, so need to dust off the trainers.

I have had knee surgery too, and find that the neoprene knee supports from Boots are great. They keep the joints warm & therefore flexible and less injury prone. I personally try and avoid tarmac and when running in the park, try and run on the dirt edge next to the path...

I also learned from the running club to get your trainers properly fitted, in case you pronate or supernate (ie, your feet tilt in or out when you run - not great for knees and hips)

twinkle183 · 02/03/2010 19:42

I have started running and am doing ww's at the same time!! The weight is coming off surely but slowly!

I have cut out caffeine although I have been told today by the doctor that I have a Streptococcal infection in my throat.. so have to wait until that clears... before I can run again!

Are you doing interval training?

I also love running and will be doing it day run and day off! On day off I intend to do either hannah waterman or natalie cassidy dvd with some pilates on the mornings that I run! I am planning to run the GNR in Sept so need to cardio fit!

simmo39 · 02/03/2010 22:41

Walked to school and back this afternoon so that was 40 minutes and went for a 20 minute run tonight. Found it really hard as I am not used to running, mostly walked as so out of breath. But I will persevere as I know it will get easier the more I do.

Will heed your advice Romilly and invest in some new trainers. Not sure when I bought these as they look new, don't even know if they are running trainers! But last thing I want to do is cause an injury as I still have 4 plus stone to loose.

Diet going good though really pleased with it, am LC and finding it pretty easy for once..........

Kryptik · 03/03/2010 09:41

Hi everyone.
I went running on Sunday (4min intervals) and then came down with a bad cold.
I feel better today so I'm hoping to go this evening. I've started being careful about what I eat now so I'm hoping to shift some weight now.

DuchessofAvon sorry to hear your having problems with your knees. Hopefully the dr can sort it out for you.

MissWooWoo it sounds like your off to a great start

Hope you get better soon twinkle. I find it really amazing that I get so frustrated and disappointed if something stops me from doing a run. I would never have believed that I would feel like that!

I've started running again since first posting on this thread. Have discovered running with the push chair. It's not one of those speacial ones for running, but it's a sturdy 3-wheeler and seems up to the job. I've done 3 half-hour runs over the past week and am feeling better already. Keep it up, everyone!

DeirdreB · 03/03/2010 16:59

how's everyone's pelvic floor holding up? (whispers)

Brollyflower · 03/03/2010 17:10

LOL Deirdre. Surprisingly well here despit being v lax with the old excercises and having fairly recently given birth again . I know it's not that way for everyone though.

Do fart like a trooper while running though .
