January 2024! Fresh start & develop new habits. Join-in to reset & refresh and become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

I don't normally pop on the scales in between Wednesdays but I did today and pleased that I was a pound lighter. I know it's just water weight rather than burning fat, but it's reassuring to know that all of the increase in pounds hasn't 'stuck' if that makes sense.

Today's menu

B - boiled egg, toast, lemon water
L - Cajun bean soup, satsuma, small portion of chicken (for protein)
D - Grilled fish, red peppers, new potatoes, steamed leeks.

Exercise - planning a bodycombat class later

TheRealHousewife · 04/01/2024 11:06

@WhatWouldTheDoctorDo I totally get what you mean. It’s reassuring to know that mostly any quick gain (over Christmas for example) isn’t pure laid down fat and it is just water weight & waste 👍

Whoop I'm already down since the 1st January.

No major changes to diet, just cutting out wine and increasing exercise.

SW 79.5 kg (30th Dec)
CW 77.8 kg
First GW 70kg
Long Term GW 65kg

LeftyLou · 04/01/2024 11:46

@missfliss such a great post re loss on the scales and taking other forms of looking at how we are changing.

@TheRealHousewife you posted a meal you had a few days back. Maybe a week or so? It was a salmon one with Dill cream sauce. Sounded amazing. Just wondering if you made the sauce yourself?

I made myself an iced coffee this morning. I am not the biggest coffee lover but I do like a sweet one. So made it with skimmed milk and a little bit of Jordan's vanilla skinny syrup.

Today's meals

B: melon and orange.

L: mince bolognase with boiled rice and spinach

T: beef (leftover from christmas) potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and carrots

Exercise: 1 walk round the block (short version) yoga/gentle stretches.

Treat: long hot soak in bubble bath.

I was disappointed in my breakfast two fold. One I wanted raspberries. Went to my local Morrisons. They only had 3 punnets of raspberries (are they punnets) all with in date. All with mould on them! So I opted for oranges instead. Two. Then when I had my Oranges and melon this morning the melon was not sweet and the texture was off.

I am looking forward to my lunch and tea though. My dad made the bolognase and he is a great cook. Not that I am biased 😄

Hope everyone is having a good day.

Twopintsprick81 · 04/01/2024 12:37

Good to see that a lot of people have gained less than they thought after the excesses of Xmas. That is part of the reason why I don't weigh, because the fluctuations can throw me off plan, but I can see just by looking in the mirror that I'm bigger. At a guess, I've been consuming an average of 4000 calories daily between boxing day and Jan 2nd so it's no real surprise!!😬

I'll post what I've ate at the end of each day as I often change my mind about what I fancy but I'm loving seeing other people's menus for ideas.

Twopintsprick81 · 04/01/2024 12:39

I meant between Christmas eve and Jan 2nd so it's even worse😂

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 04/01/2024 13:38

I love reading other people's menus for a bit of inspiration too @Twopintsprick81

shearwater2 · 04/01/2024 13:47

I can't get quite back into it yet, it's still Christmas. I'm doing it steadily. Going back to normal eating apart from still having wine o'clock and crisps as well as there is lovely M&S white wine in the house still, which will probably be finished by this weekend, but am recording it all on Nutracheck. Went to the gym for the first visit of the year yesterday and am going to yoga class this evening.

I had only gained 1lb from my lowest weight when I weighed myself on 27th Dec (and hadn't weighed myself since 28th November so was really pleased with all the work dinners and so in in December) but I may have been a bit blasé since then!

Sunshineofyourlove · 04/01/2024 14:29

Thanks for the welcome back, @TheRealHousewife! I'm another struggling with getting back on track, I didn't even realise yesterday was Wednesday 🙈so I weighed this morning instead.

So my SW is 11st 6
TW will be 10st 6.

Here goes....

ThreeRingCircus · 04/01/2024 14:40

Today:

B - coffee and a banana
L - parsnip soup and an apple
D - egg on toast with grilled tomatoes
S - greek yoghurt with cherries
E - a 30 minute walk on my lunch break

I have been having really vivid dreams the past couple of nights. I've no idea whether it's connected to my new way of eating or just coincidence.

WeirdPookah · 04/01/2024 15:24

Thank you @afaloren at least we know what to do! Though it is harder now being married and having children, when I lost that much weight before I was single, living alone and free to anything I needed, not have anything around to eat I shouldn't etc.

Today, been shopping, got vegetables to put lentil bolognaise in slow cooker at the weekend and made vegetable sauce today. 8 boxes for the freezer.

B: kidney bean burrito
L: broccoli with cheese (was meant to have a pasta, but the sauce was weird!)
D: roast vegetables, spicy chicken

Weighing in tomorrow.

Lazysundayafternoon2024 · 04/01/2024 17:02

Hi everyone!

@WhatWouldTheDoctorDo I know what you mean, so glad the Xmas weight doesn't stick too much!! Its nice to indulge every now and again without causing too much damage.

I had a good weigh in today, 2 more lbs off which takes me to 4lbs off so far! I know I won't carry on losing this fast but it's making me feel good which us the main thing. Also the sun was shining here today so I went out for a lunch time walk :) Go me!

@PatienceOfEngels I've been listening to the Dr Chatterjee podcast on Spotify these past few days. What he says really makes sense and I think ill keep listening to it, especially when I'm lacking motivation, thanks for recommending it!

L: omelette with salad
D: meatballs pasta and cheese.

These two meals come in just under 1000 calories so room for snacks if I want it.

SW: 11st 12lbs
CW: 11st 8lbs
GW: 10st

PatienceOfEngels · 04/01/2024 17:13

@Lazysundayafternoon2024 there are some really good ones. They're my go to podcast when trying to get some steps in or even round the house doing housework with my headphones on.

@ThisIsntThe80sPat I feel your pain! We got back from the UK last Friday (I'm in NL). Even when I watch what I eat I always leave the UK stuffed and feeling bloated and so full. My DM will give us a roast at 1/2pm and then a buffet tea at 6pm when we really don't need anything.

Brunch (was up so late didn't eat till 10:30! School holidays here started a week later than in the UK so we're still off): scrambled eggs, mushrooms and 1 slice rye toast with butter, coffee and OJ.
Dinner: green chicken curry (out the freezer!) with rice, peas and crispy onions.
Snacks: last 3 Christmas biscuits, 3 birthday truffles, 2 satsumas and a pear.
Herbal tea and lots of water.

Haven't got any steps in today and need to go do my yoga now.

Going to have a takeaway tomorrow (Chinese) for a birthday celebration.

Lovely to see the thread so busy but finding it hard to keep up with everyone! Lovely to hear so many inspirational stories.

LegoTherapy · 04/01/2024 17:22

I am so hungry tonight! I'm waiting for soup to cook and snacking which isn't like me. I've walked 10 miles today so might be the shock to my system after the Christmas break.

PatienceOfEngels · 04/01/2024 17:59

NSW!!! In the last 6 weeks have lost:

1cm on neck
1 cm on waist (smallest part) and 4cm at navel
4cm on hips
3cm on thighs
1.5cm on upper arm
4cm on bust

Since the summer the following are even more:
4cm on waist (6cm at navel)
2.5cm upper arms
4cm under bust

I almost didn't recognise myself in the mirror today. I feel smaller and slimmer and things just feel easier (I could bring my foot up into a lunge from downward facing dog without manually moving my foot for the first time ever today in yoga!).

That's on top of the 7.1kg that I've said goodbye to in the last 3 months.

Feeling strong, calm, in control.

Flowerchild547 · 04/01/2024 18:15

Hope everyone is having a good day!
I’m enjoying reading people’s tips and enjoying the knowledge sharing!
Today I was in the office which I usually find difficult as I have no willpower so would buy a take away coffee, drink lots of office coffee, buy lunch etc etc etc. But today I only had a takeaway coffee and I made it a small one with coconut milk rather than the medium syrupy ones I had been favouring before.
Maybe I shouldn’t have had the coffee at all but I don’t want to completely deprive myself and feel miserable. All in moderation.
It’s starting to dry up here so I was able to do a bit of a longer walk. If it’s dry tomorrow then I want to make sure I get my steps in!

maybein2022 · 04/01/2024 18:48

Evening all! It’s so nice hearing how people are doing and also meal plans- I was wondering about a separate thread to come on each evening and post what you’ve eaten, both for accountability but also inspiration? What do people think?

I am on day 4 now of WW and using the see how you eat app, having lost 2st 10lb last year I know it works. However this Jan I am also doing no sugar January and also ditching the diet drinks- so far so good. I am also sort of doing intermittent fasting- I never usually ate breakfast anyway and was drinking those ‘skinny’ chilled coffees instead which I’ve also cut out- expensive and full of sweeteners. So I am tending to first eat around 1.15 pm after my toddler goes for his nap and not eating after 9.15 pm. Although another resolution is to eat lunch with him more, so on those days I’d start eating at 12.00 and finish by 8pm.

afaloren · 04/01/2024 18:57

Evening all. A good day so far here.

B - Arla protein yoghurt
L - Mushroom soup with gluten free toast, two clementines
D - Mackerel with green veg and a Lindahl yoghurt.

Snacks: 3 x babybel lights and a packet of hula hoops.

I’ve done yoga, Body Project Tabata video and two dog walks. Weighing in tomorrow, hope it’s ok to do WOF instead of WOW.

Twopintsprick81 · 04/01/2024 19:29

An OK day here but I'm still caning the energy drinks (sugar free but obviously still terrible for you).
B:couple slices black pudding to use it up and baked beans
L:big bowl of skyr with oats and berries
D:veg frittata and more beans
S:4 ryvita and philly and 2 chocolates

I still haven't started exercising. Realistically I probably won't start till Monday when the kid's go back. I like working out in the mornings and because they're still off, I've been enjoying lying in instead.
Somebody mentioned a lentil bolognese. That sounds right up my street so might look up a recipe.

Ivy09 · 04/01/2024 19:31

I finally weighed in. Starting at 11st 9lb 😭 whilst this doesn't seem horrific I had got down to 10st 5lb last summer. Back on it now, cutting out bread as I can't be trusted with it and getting my 10,000 steps in. 🤞

Spudlover · 04/01/2024 19:44

Good Evening, decent day here so far.

@maybein2022 I use the see how you eat app too, although I haven’t taken any photos for a few days, I need to get back on it!

@PatienceOfEngels great stats, well done. I love that feeling when everything suddenly feels lighter and easier, it’s the best motivator.

DD went back to uni today so I’m feeling a little sad. She’s having a ball but I miss her. She has autism and has struggled with mental health, making friends, self harming etc but she seems to have found her tribe and is loving her course.

Food:
B: Porridge with cherries
L: Chicken salad
D: Chicken sausages, sweet potato mash, green beans.
Probably a Babybel light later.

Plus 45 mins of treadmill and weights.

Patchworksack · 04/01/2024 19:49

Evening all! I’ve had another good exercise day - boxing/HIIT class and dog walk plus school runs so well up on step count. Lunch was uninspiring tuna sandwich and protein yoghurt, but dinner was a Green Chef special - hotpot and green salad. Trying to follow 16:8 as I never eat breakfast anyway but finding the evenings tough! I think the evening glass of wine and salty sugary snacks are my undoing but 4 days in dry January already feels endless.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 04/01/2024 20:16

Feeling very chuffed with today's efforts. Completed a bodycombat class then had a nice fish & red pepper rick stein dish with some boiled potatoes and steamed leeks which was pretty tasty. I almost didn't miss butter on the potatoes! And I have plenty of calories left today for a sneaky piece of Christmas chocolate when I settle down to watch tv in a bit.

DomesticatedPickle · 04/01/2024 20:19

Evening everyone.

WoW yesterday was:
SW - 94.3kg (1st jan)
CW - 93.5kg
GW - 74kg

I have set my goal for 10% rather than a big ideal weight goal as I don’t want to be overwhelmed and I look at the weight range for my short height and can’t see how that’s possible!

I am absolutely full of a cold and have a terrible period going on but I’m pleased I’ve made some good choices and I have done my exercise program every day despite feeling like it might kill me.

Hope everyone else is doing well?

LemonDrizzle23 · 04/01/2024 20:34

Evening! Loving the January positivity fighting off the rain and doom and gloom!

Meal 1: chicken, toast and cauliflower cheese
Meal 2: chicken tacos
Probably a bit too much chocolate...

Did 10,600 steps. Tomorrow I'm aiming for similar, plus I've found some low impact cardio on you tube to have a go at. Improving my cardio fitness is a 2024 goal!
