Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 3

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/06/2021 23:21

We’ve chatted as much as we (used to) eat! New shiny thread for more support.

General principles:

No sugar
No wheat
No processed foods
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

Everything else is fair game!

Slides sneakily back into thread. Hope everyone is well. I have completely fallen off the wagon. Very frustrated at myself. Back to it tomo. Have been to the gym four times in the last week and sea swimming every evening. So am taking that as a small positive.

CornedBeef451 · 28/07/2021 01:54

I ate chocolate for the first time in 3 months this afternoon and now I can't sleep!

Tiredandbored · 28/07/2021 09:30

Morning all! Back home from holidays, grocery shopping done, fridge restocked and menu planned! Feeling quite good despite a little bit of excess during the holiday, though am not going to weigh myself as am on my period and that always affects my weight. Will wait a few days and see where I'm at then.

Today is:
B - porridge
L - scrambled eggs with smoked salmon
D - fish pie

Am sitting watching the Olympics, really need to get up and away from the TV for a while but am enjoying the sport so much!

Manteo · 28/07/2021 19:29

Hello, I'm new!

Read the book (well read most of it properly then skim read to get to the plan!) And I've gently started this week. By gently I mean I'm gradually using up food I already have in and some of them aren't on plan.

Anyone else feel like they might be overdoing it on the fruit due to wanting sweet stuff? Today I've had banana, blueberries, pineapple, strawberries, dried cherries and dates!

Any advice for stir frys? What oil and sauces do you use? I just saw that my soy sauce and rice vinegar both have sugar in them Sad

HighlandCowbag · 28/07/2021 20:17

Welcome @Manteo. I use sesame oil in stir frys because I only use a little bit, have them probably once a month and I do think stir fry flavour is affected by what oil you use. If I didn't want to use sesame I'd use lard. Lard always sounds grotty but I use it in loads of things, and beef dripping which tesco sells in a block and I have found it improves the flavour of most things.

Had a good couple of days. Was 6pm last night when I got home so a bit late to do a full roast dinner so had sausages (97% pork ones), mash potatoes and a big pile of veg. Only had a banana all day before that and didn't actually feel hungry until I started eating.

Today I've had mackerel and salad for lunch. And had roast chicken, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, plus brocoli and kale which was lush.

Tomorrow am not sure what I will have for dinner. Ds has kayaking until 8pm, so may make a frittata and have that with some salad when I get home. Lunch will probably be a bit of leftovers from tonight.

Sleeping so much better these last few days. And a massive amount of stress has been lifted plus am mucking 2 ponies out plus various other things so am quite active so am hoping it shows as a loss next week. Have got 2.8lbs to go to get to next stone category and would love to see that in the next couple of weeks, especially post holiday. Also have my period which was a few days early so hoping when that fucks off, it takes at least a lb with it.

SingaporeSlinky · 28/07/2021 22:22

Seems it’s AF time for a few of us. It normally sends my weight up by a few pounds, but I’m actually down a few so I’m pleased with that. I normally find myself ravenous when it’s due but I’ve been very good. I had an ice cream cone after dinner yesterday because I’d made them for the kids and just fancied one as a treat. But no other snacks all day. Also went for a bike ride with the kids.

I also find myself eating lots of fruit, but not because I’m craving sugar, I just enjoy having fruit with yoghurt for lunch sometimes. And surely the benefits of real fruit in terms of fibre and vitamins etc outweighs the sugar?

veryblearyeyed · 29/07/2021 04:13

Hi everyone, rough week here, DH has been doing all the cooking because I have an exam and a work deadline. But he keeps forgetting about the wheat, as do I until sitting at the table in front of a lasagne. I thought a few days wouldn’t hurt but my IBS is massively flared up as a result.

No weight loss but not surprising. I did have four inches chopped off my massively thick hair, as well as a huge undercut, so surely that’s got to be a lb off, right? Grin

veryblearyeyed · 29/07/2021 04:15

Manteo, if it keeps you off the sugar I wouldn’t worry about the fruit. You could try swapping some fruit for sweet veg like tomatoes (yes I know it’s a fruit but you know what I mean) or peas.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 29/07/2021 07:58

Episode 4 of the Chris and Xand podcast is out, it's another interesting one.

Manteo · 29/07/2021 08:11

I've just had carrot cake porridge for breakfast, porridge with grated carrot, honey, sultanas and cinnamon!

Tiredandbored · 29/07/2021 09:20

Was it tasty?
Manteo · 29/07/2021 09:47

Yes, I've had it before, it's good.

RubyGoat · 29/07/2021 11:03

Carrot cake porridge sounds delicious. Do you put the carrot in to cook with the oats, or at the end so it's still raw?

It's working... I'm down to 10st 9, which is 1st 7 ish this year in total. And the jeans that I could barely do up at Christmas will now come down without being unbuttoned. Much to DD & DH's amusement... BlushGrin DD tried to climb me like a tree yesterday!
Can't remember breakfast.
Baked potato for lunch with butter, & salad. No toppings I could have that I'm not intolerant to. (Met family for lunch)
I had a grilled mackerel, sauteed potatoes & a lovely watercress salad for tea yesterday. 2 kiwi fruit & a cup of cocoa later.
No idea about the calories.

Today-
Big bowl of homemade maple pecan granola (I mean big!)
Lunch probably poached eggs & tomato salad
Tea - I was going to have fresh sardines with rice & salad, but I'm starting another migraine. Hence the big breakfast. Lunch might be off too, depending how quickly it comes on.

Has anyone found a reduction in inflammation (arthritis etc...) by following this appears? If so, when did you notice an improvement? Thanks

RubyGoat · 29/07/2021 12:45

I am following this WOE partly to try to reduce inflammation - I have horrendous chronic migraines, IBS & adult acne, all of which have failed to respond to conventional treatments, & are thought to be linked to poor diet/inflammation. No improvement yet but it's not been very long. I'm aiming to give it a year & then see - if no improvement I'll not bother any more. I'm cutting out farmed fish, all processed foods, meat, poultry, eggs & dairy that has been raised on grain & continual antibiotics etc, instead of a natural diet. And I'm trying to improve my omega 3:6 ratio (probably this will be possible mostly by eating more fish & less processed foods, unhealthy animal foods etc). I don't eat bread/wheat as it disagrees with me, apparently sourdough spelt is likely to be ok for IBS sufferers though.

I'm not sure what I'll do if it turns out I'm intolerant to pulses. I've not tested them yet. Definitely ok with lactose (dairy), trying fructose today (honey, mango, sugar snap peas etc). Really missing lentils. I can take or leave meat!

veryblearyeyed · 29/07/2021 15:02

I briefly tried the AIP diet to identify IBS triggers but by day 4 felt like vomiting at the thought of any of the things I am allowed to eat.

So now I’m trying this woe and I can already tell a difference from not eating wheat (most noticeable when I do eat it). Think I’ve been doing this for nearly a month.

Words · 29/07/2021 15:36

I noticed a reduction in ankle swelling after about ten days, but they are looking puffy again so perhaps just coincidental.

Also a reduction in pain in my arthritic toe and stiffness in the morning, but again I have been trying a number of things to tackle those too, so not sure if it is a diet-related improvement or not.

Sorry. Not too helpful ! Grin

jewel1968 · 29/07/2021 16:18

Thanks. I think it's worth trying for inflammation. I will let you know if I notice any improvement. I have good and bad days so difficult to judge

RubyGoat · 29/07/2021 17:10

@veryblearyeyed I’m doing the FODMAP diet (with the assistance of a NHS dietitian) to identify my IBS triggers. I was surprised to realise that all the triggers I’m aware of are in the same group (although I probably shouldn’t have been, it makes sense really). Onions, garlic & wheat are all fructans.

I won’t lie though, it’s really restrictive.

veryblearyeyed · 29/07/2021 18:04

@LegoCaltrops, I’m going to pretend I didn’t see that about onions and garlic 😱

veryblearyeyed · 29/07/2021 18:05

Although I had noticed that raw onions make my stomach hurt.

RubyGoat · 29/07/2021 19:16

I’m clinging to the hope that I might be able to tolerate small amounts of them. Apparently those 3 foods are amongst the most common IBS irritants…

Tiredandbored · 30/07/2021 09:09

Weighed myself this morning and am delighted to have lost another couple of lbs despite the holiday extras! It shows that this WoE is not so restrictive that having occasional treats throws you completely out.

I've now lost a total of 2 stones, my next target is to lose another 3lbs which will take me down below 11 stones and into the healthy BMI category.

That's great! I'll be weighing on on Tuesday as that's the day I started. Hope it's good news!
HighlandCowbag · 30/07/2021 10:38

Whoop whoop Tired, that's amazing! I was pleasantly surprised as well when I lost the bloating post holiday.

Have had headache the last 2 days, think it's probably my body adjusting back to this woe. I didn't particularly have anything sweet, but certainly had lots of carbs. Avoided sliced bread but did have other wheat (like batter on fish, pizza).

Today is takeaway for dinner, will be indian which I think lends itself to the woe if they use ghee and I avoid bread which I do. Not sure on lunch, probably cheese and pickles or something.

Yesterday was good. Had cheese salad for lunch and then leftovers cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes for tea as I wasn't that hungry due to eating salad at 3pm. Did have wine tho.
