Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 3

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/06/2021 23:21

We’ve chatted as much as we (used to) eat! New shiny thread for more support.

General principles:

No sugar
No wheat
No processed foods
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

Everything else is fair game!

And you're supposed to keep them (flax seeds) in the fridge or freezer.

I am such a flax seed novice.

SingaporeSlinky · 25/07/2021 19:28

That sounds like too much hassle now 🙂

HighlandCowbag · 25/07/2021 20:08

I bought flax seed a few weeks ago. They just judge me, whole and unroasted, from the cupboard they are in 😄.

RubyGoat · 25/07/2021 20:21

I just keep mine in the cupboard, & I don’t roast them. But I might start cooking them in the porridge rather than just adding them at the end. I do sometimes like to do a pan of toasted seeds to put on salad, flaxseeds work as well as anything.

samthebordercollie · 25/07/2021 20:36

You don't need to roast them, just grind them. A tablespoon per day. It's a bit dry and factuel but the book How to Live by Professor Robert Thomas is very informative on flax seeds among a lot of other info! He recommends them to all his patients with transit patients and the success rate is phenomenal

samthebordercollie · 25/07/2021 20:52

Transit problems not patients!

Aria999 · 25/07/2021 21:00

Thanks @samthebordercollie

I think the roasting thing was because trace amounts of cyanide or something but I found another site that said not to worry as it's too small to care about.

Just keep googling till you get the answer you want 🤣

Yes, you have to eat quite a lot to have cyanide poisoning. But it's true, there are traces in flax seeds, like ethanol in red wine. It's all about the dose.

Ahoy! I'm looking forward to catching up on zillions of missed posts tomorrow to get me back on the right path as I've been off piste for a bit (not disastrous).

I made a tagine today with masses of spices, toms, preserved lemons, apricots, a little lamb and a vast amount of broad beans. It's so delicious and filling. Some went in fridge, some in freezer; no booze or wheat in the house and I have every intention of smashing it this week.

Must get my sleep habits in order and quit my pink grapefruit juice habit...

TammyTwoSwanson · 26/07/2021 03:17

Hello at 3am. 🤮

I had some kfc chicken fillets, against my better judgement, and my stomach is NOT happy with me, in a big way. Tmi sorry! It's the first time I've eaten wheat or junk food in a few weeks and I feel so awful! I've got such a dodgy stomach and terrible heartburn, despite my regular reflux meds. Awful awful awful.

I'm sorry fish and veg! I won't forsake you again! 😭

RubyGoat · 26/07/2021 08:38

@TammyTwoSwanson if I feel an urge for junk food (it doesn’t happen so much now, except sometimes with chocolate) I try to consciously remember that it’s not particularly nutritious, it will likely give me stomach ache, bloating, migraine etc, I’ll feel tired & regret, & I’d rather use the calories for something better. Almost always helps.

Words · 26/07/2021 09:17

That's a good approach lego - think it through. Wish I had done that with the wine on Friday...

HighlandCowbag · 26/07/2021 11:59

Fridge back to normal, meal plan for week sorted, fruit bowl full and feeling motivated.

Sword fish steak, new potatoes and salad tonight, chicken dinner tomorrow, chicken salad Thursday. Salad for lunches or leftovers.

Words · 26/07/2021 15:35

Sounds great Highland !

SingaporeSlinky · 26/07/2021 15:51

I did well yesterday, homemade chicken and red lentil curry, instead of my usual sugary jar of sauce. No snacks. Today I had some crackers with apple and cheese for lunch. Quiche and salad planned for dinner. I don’t know where my willpower has come from but I’m hoping it lasts. Only week 1 for me.

RubyGoat · 26/07/2021 18:42

OMG DD is sitting next to me eating soup. Homemade soup. She's never eaten soup before in her life. I swear I can hear harps & choruses of angels... Grin

And, I've done the full mumsnet chicken thing. I made the stock from the carcass of a roast.

RubyGoat · 26/07/2021 19:03

That totally sounded like a boast, sorry. Not even a stealth boast. If it's any consolation she's spent the last 10 minutes driving me crackers by drumming on her tray, & DH has just brought her a tiny sized pepperoni pizza. (This was the incentive to try the chicken & vegetable soup, of which she had about a half cup full.) Still, I'm counting it as a win.

DH is having his customary pile of processed food for tea. He's not ready. Hoping he's going to see my weight loss & have a lightbulb moment. I've broken my weight loss plateau!

@SingaporeSlinky - I absolutely love lentil curry, that sounds lush! 😍

Benvolio · 26/07/2021 19:26

lego that didn't sound like a boast and of course you should be proud!

I tried to order a pizza just now as I had my 3rd counselling session today, which had the weird but apparently not unusual effect of knocking me for 6 physically. Luckily, pizza place was shut, so I had to eat food instead.

RubyGoat · 26/07/2021 19:52

I am proud! She is being assessed for ASD & is weirdly picky about certain types of food. It doesn't seem to be textural, & she's not actually super fussy, she's just exceedingly averse to trying new things. And horrifically messy. DH is the same. both a pain in the arse but I love them anyway

@Benvolio I misunderstood what you meant when I first read it, I thought you'd meant you'd had 3 sessions today & I thought Wow, heavy. Then I realised. Doh! Grin Hope you feel more chilled tomorrow. Maybe next time have something delicious but healthy planned/ prepared ready at home, so you are unlikely to fall victim to the call of the pizza place.

HighlandCowbag · 27/07/2021 08:02

Morning all

Been back on the scales and despite the excess last week and AF showing up this morning have only put 0.8 lbs on, am very happy with that!

Had a good day yesterday. Had a banana for lunch as was flying around everywhere all day, then was so knackered come dinner time I couldn't be arsed to do new potatoes and air fryer chips for dh so had air fryer chips, sword fish steak and salad. The steak was absolutely gorgeous, first time I've had it outside of a restaurant and will definitely do it again, have a small piece left for lunch.

Slept so much better last night, was bang out for 10pm, woke at 5.30am when dh got up for work. Not slept well for 2 weeks, combination of stress over moving ponies, being on holiday, crappy food and beer I think.

Am doing a chicken dinner later. Have a huge cauliflower ready on the allotment, am going to make cauliflower cheese with it. Will be a few tablespoons of flour in the sauce but tbh I am not going to worry too much, it will probably work out at 5-6g per serving and think the veg amounts will cancel the flour.

Really looking forward to a 'proper' dinner.

Words · 27/07/2021 12:46

Well done Highland! Glad the pony move went ok and you slept well. I do Caulie cheese too, and reason the same as you - the flour is minimal when divided into portions. It's about balance, this thing, I think!

Benvolio · 27/07/2021 13:30

Mmm if I'm feeling decadent I occasionally cook myself a steak. It's worth having it less often and buying really good meat I think. Tonight I have some rope-grown scottish mussels (from lidl). No additives and microwavable. Also, apparently a very ecologically efficient protein source plus omega 3. The trick is to avoid soaking up the sauce with white bread.

Benvolio We had mussels last night - we live near Mont St Michel and the mussels are delicious and in season at the moment. I end up giving my sauce to the dog otherwise it's too tempting to soak it up with bread. Everyone else had crusty baguette but I didn't cave! I haven't eaten bread (except our homemade pizzas) for a couple of months now and really don't miss it.
Benvolio · 27/07/2021 17:01

sam the force is clearly with you on the bread front! I have promised myself homemade custard (v little sugar or maybe xylitol though I don't think the good dr approves) and berries so there will be NO BREAD HERE

Words · 27/07/2021 18:26

Impressive work Sam. Grin I love mussels too. But no baguette? Formidable !

I just had baked chicken thighs I marinated in the smoky yoghurt with shawarma paste stirred in. Served with green veg. V nice. Rhubarb, raspberries and a little cream for pud.

I now have a massive winter dish of slow cooked cavolo Nero to wade through this week too. Made on a whim earlier.

Living alone has its ups and downs !

This may sound odd, but this week I suddenly feel a lot lighter and more supple. I've noticed a difference in the gym too.
