Severely obese - Accountability thread - trying to avoid WLS

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 09:58

Hi all,

After my recent post about bariatric surgery, and lots of helpful and encouraging comments, I have decided to make an accountability thread for me to try and lose the weight naturally. I will remain on the NHS waitlist in the meantime and then if I don't have the need for surgery in the end then great. Smile I am morbidly obese and hoping to hear from other people who are too.

I'm not near a scale at the mo, but I am at the docs tomorrow so I will get weighed and measured there so I have the most accurate weight & BMI to post.

If anybody would like to join in that would be great.

Just did a quick weigh at home at I'm 315.5lbs so we will see what the docs get tomorrow

Well done op 👏 you can do this. I thought I'd never lose weight and should just resign myself to getting fatter (I didn't have as much to lose, nearly 5 and a half stone) and now I've only got 2 and a half to go. I broke into the next stone bracket down this morning too 😁

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 10:54

@3Britnee thank you! Well done to you too, feel free to check in here with your weight weekly/monthly if that's your type of thing Smile thanks for your advice x

3Britnee · 09/06/2021 10:58

Thanks, today I'm 11st 13lb 8oz and my blood sugar was 5.6. My goal is 9st 7lb, but that still leaves me overweight lol, if I get to 9st 6lb I'll be top end of my healthy bmi 🙄😂

Remember too, you didn't get to that weight overnight, so it will take time for it to come off. Once I accepted that and wasn't looking for the next fastest fix, and to lose it all in a month, I started making progress.

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 11:02

@3Britnee yes my healthy BMI weight would be 7st 3 - 9st 10lb Shock seems so far but as you say it won't happen overnight!

OP posts:
3Britnee · 09/06/2021 11:07

Break it down, set your first target at 5.5lb.

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 11:09

Good idea, thank you. That's my first target then :D

OP posts:
3Britnee · 09/06/2021 11:12

👏

Have you worked out a meal plan yet?

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 11:13

Not yet, I think I'm just going to make some little changes first like a few in the other thread suggested. Such as making my breakfast a bit better. Swapping out a few things. I've not got a penny to my name while mid month so as soon as I'm paid I'll have a good cupboard clean out and go and do a nice, healthy shop.

OP posts:
BlibBlabBlob · 09/06/2021 11:14

Good luck OP! Happy to be on this thread to support you, if you'll have me. I'm not especially trying to lose weight myself anymore, although I'm still a little heavier than I would ideally like to be.

This thread is a great idea, as you say it doesn't necessarily mean you'll never have the surgery but if you can improve your health in the meantime that's brill and if you can find a way forward without it then that's amazing.

What is your plan for reducing your weight?

Vodkabulary · 09/06/2021 11:19

I’ll join you! I was 310lb last week but after trying to implement some small healthy changes and started a Noom trial for 2 weeks on Sunday Imwas 306.4lb this morning.

I was planning to put in a Request to talk to my GP today to discuss my weight. Since my daughter who’s almost 18 months I’ve gained 4st but my diet isn’t half as bad as it was before her! They did blood tests and I didn’t get a call back so assume no thyroid issues but I just don’t know what to say to my GP! I need and want help. I don’t think I can do it alone I just resort to my horrible binge eating / restrictive dieting ways and it makes me so miserable

Sorry to hijack OP

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 11:20

@BlibBlabBlob of course, more support the better. I don't have many friends/family in life so online support is really important to me too.

I've not got a plan, as such yet. There's a hell of a lot of changes I need to make. So I'm going to start with a couple first until I've made some more habits then add more to make more good habits. 'Habit-stacking' my friend told me it's called.

First change is going to be my breakfast. Usually a sugary cereal. I'm going to change that to be something with a good amount of protein and filling but without the sugar :)

OP posts:
lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 11:21

@Vodkabulary oh, yay someone to finally join me! We sound very similar weight wise. Never heard of Noom, I might have a look. If it's like one of those plans where they send you meals out though I don't think it'll be for me. My son is almost 1, he's my first.

Not hijacking at all, I want this to be a group thing Thanks

Intermittent fasting has worked really well for my family, the 16:8 program has been very manageable. It might be too much at your stage but worth talking to a doctor about. Upsides, you can theoretically eat what you want during the 8 hour window (albeit you should try to stick to healthy food), we have seen rapid results. But the hunger pangs can be tough while you’re waiting for midday to come. Coffee is your friend during those times. Doing a 45 minute brisk walk first thing every morning has also been a game changer to kick start the metabolism. Again, this may be something to build up to.

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 11:23

Also forgot to add about talking to your GP @Vodkabulary - I'm not sure what area you are but I'm pretty sure most are the same. Just be honest with them and tell them that you really want to lose some weight and you're struggling. They should refer you to the service local to you. A lot provide 12 weeks free slimming world too I believe. SW is not for me but they can do other things to help too x

OP posts:
lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 11:25

@Bodgers thank you - yes I agree I think fasting may be a bit much for me, especially with how my eating pattern is now. I don't think it'd be good for me but I appreciate the advice. The morning walk is a really good idea thank you. I've been wanting to walk more with my son but I am just so lazy and cannot stand a walk. I need to get off my arsed and do it, even if it's only 10 mins.

Hi op. Saw your other thread. I really do recommend that book why we eat so much - bottom line, don't eat anything a farm can't produce! So eat meat and fish, fruit and vegetables. Your strawberries and cream would be fine but not the fridge raiders - plain chicken fine. Nothing processed. Cook with butter, lard or olive oil not seed or vegetable oil. Good luck.

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 11:26

@Tuckedinbelly I'm definitely going to get the book when I've the funds for it. Next week probably Smile read the online reviews after the recommendation and it sounds great.

OP posts:
lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 11:27

@Tuckedinbelly I'm also growing some veg at the minute! Forgot to mention that.

First time growing anything and I've got carrots, potatoes, peppers and chillies growing at the minute. Hoping they turn out!

Bodgers · 09/06/2021 11:28

It’s so difficult when you have a little one, don’t beat yourself up! You have the motivation to change now and that’s the most important thing. Small changes done consistently lead to big changes! Can’t wait to follow your journey and see how you progress!

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 11:28

@Bodgers thanks so much Thanks

Vodkabulary · 09/06/2021 11:28

It’s not a meal thing it looks at the psychology of weightloss I get tbh I’m just trying it because it was £1 for 2 weeks trail and I’m
Bloody desperate! I lost 5st on slimming world before my middle one (hes 3 this month) but if I’m home at with myself I was eating bare minimum l, not eating at all on weigh day and then finally caving and having a cheat binge day and it’s just not healthy at all! I’ve been finally tackling my anxiety and depression but I’ve also realised that without proper help (why I want to speak to the gp) I’m never going to succeed because I just fall into a binge / restrict pattern.

I also totally use food as a comfort and reward. Have a shit day get a Chinese it will make me feel better …. Have a really successful day get a Chinese as a reward.

You mention weightloss surgery in your op. Did you speak to the dr about that? I always thought that wouldn’t be for me but I feel like
I’m running out of options and o can’t bare the idea I’ll get any heavier I’m
So miserable about it. I’ve tried so hard since having my DD but just seem to gain weight

Imtoooldforallthis · 09/06/2021 11:28

I have two stone to lose, if I lived alone I know I could lose it, unfortunately being the only cook in the family I finf it difficult. I cook healthy meals but DH will fill the cupboards with sweets, chocolate ice cream etc. Also I love my food and cook from scratch every night and love looking at recipes so find it hard to not be able to cook what I want. But my most recent book purchase is the slimming foodie and I have to say the recipes are fab, definately worth a look if you like to cook.

Vodkabulary · 09/06/2021 11:30

Also sorry for the typos I’m currently being used as a climbing frame by my 2 toddlers 🤣🤣🤣 not making a good impression here 😳

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 11:33

@Vodkabulary yes, I did speak to my GP about that, I literally just phoned up. Told him I wanted to be referred for bariatric surgery. He agreed that at my size it would be a good idea and confirmed that I would be eligible and forwarded my info on. I get properly weighed and measured etc tomorrow so that's when I will begin on the pathway.

I think it's the last resort for me now, you should look for my other thread in AIBU that was the main part of it, too much to explain here.

I do want to try and do it naturally but like you I've tried and failed so many times I'm fed up and sort of seeing it as the only way. I've decided I need a more positive mindset and that I am going to give it my absolute best while I'm on the pathway and hopefully that will result it me doing it myself anyway! Star
