Severely obese - Accountability thread - trying to avoid WLS

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 09:58

Hi all,

After my recent post about bariatric surgery, and lots of helpful and encouraging comments, I have decided to make an accountability thread for me to try and lose the weight naturally. I will remain on the NHS waitlist in the meantime and then if I don't have the need for surgery in the end then great. Smile I am morbidly obese and hoping to hear from other people who are too.

I'm not near a scale at the mo, but I am at the docs tomorrow so I will get weighed and measured there so I have the most accurate weight & BMI to post.

If anybody would like to join in that would be great.

@Imtoooldforallthis yes, that's an issue he too. My DH is so thin it's unreal for the amount of crap he shovels down his throat Grin I'm probably going to feel bad saying that we aren't buying that sort of stuff anymore, he's not fat so why should he deprive himself of a treat but if he wants something he can go and get it and eat it in the garden XD

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 09/06/2021 11:41

I'll join you for some reciprocal cheer leading.

I am also trying to avoid surgery. I eat to manage my moods, have just been diagnosed ADHD, and that is probably why.

I was doing well, then had some family stress and I've put it all back on.

Consistency is challenging for me, I feel defeated by my weight and the overwhelm means I cannot stick to a plan.

I have high BP and cardiac issues run in the family. So, my fat ass will kill me, and I'd really rather not die.

My DH is also slim and fit. He is annoyingly slim and annoyingly fit and annoyingly able to prioritise himself.

Imtoooldforallthis · 09/06/2021 11:42

Oh how I agree, I've mentioned this on other posts and all I get is that I should be responsible for my own diet. My daughter put some weight on over lock down so we are trying to help each other. We are currently having shakes for breakfast which we are both managing OK, but I haven't ly list any weight yet!!!!!

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 11:43

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria welcome, I hope we can all do this together. I'm so miserable at the minute Sad

OP posts:
lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 11:46

@Imtoooldforallthis yeah, I did get a few harsh and honest replies - I admit I probably did need it though. It's just hard to face sometimes.

Hopefully you and your daughter can start to lose a bit of weight too. I tried all the shake stuff (slim fast specifically) and I lost quite a lot but it was sustainable for me. I couldn't afford to keep buying the stuff then when I stopped I didn't know what to eat and just put it all back on Blush I've tried so many of the diets at this point, I think I just need to make some better habits and changes, not a strict plan as such. I don't think strict plans work for me, I can't stick to them. X

Hi Op. I saw your thread about the bariatric surgery and have been very concerned about you. Especially at such a young age.
I don't know if it might be any use to you but the doctor can also prescribe a thing called talking therapies, might give you a bit of real life encouragement.

I am these days way over what I should be. I am on loads of medication for various things, not able to walk further than the garden gate at the moment and have to stop halfway when going up the stairs as I can't breathe. I have never been this big in my life and it is depressing the hell out of me. Possibly why i eat so much comfort food.
I do intend to change my diet as I really need to lose at least 10st. I don't know what that is in todays measurements (cos I'm old). Not starting until next week as I am not at all well this week.
But I shall follow everyone and hope to join you soon.
Good luck all. 💐💐

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 11:59

@notthemum

Thanks so much for your message and concern. I am feeling a lot better now compared to yesterday and this morning, I barely slept at all.

I've been quite ill recently too, I still am to be honest. TMI maybe but diarrhoea and cramps for the past week but just a stomach bug apparently. I've not eaten much at all this week and what I have eaten has been no good for me, lots of toast. Starting to feel a bit more human today so hopefully it's clearing up.

It's so sad being this big at such a young age, I have no friends in a similar position either and very little friends as it is so it is hard.

Hopefully we can change that x

All the best OP. I did read your other thread but didn't comment on it.

I didn't have a lot to lose but when I did I found breaking things down easier to handle. Change one thing first and make it a habit which it sounds like you are doing with breakfast.

I also used an app which broke the weight loss into small chunks so I didn't focus on the end weight but on the next achievement which seemed manageable.

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 12:23

Thanks @StuffyHead, do you remember the name of the app at all? That sounds like something I need. Most I've tried say '13st' to goal and it's just like Jesus, that's a long way Confused

I lurked on your thread Op and I think some of the responses to your diet were a bit OTT, I certainly ate a far worse diet than that when I had rapid weight gain across 2 pregnancies. I tried for years to lose weight without any specific plan and just got bigger, I need the control of strict rules or I just eat like every day is Christmas Day. I suspect I will be on some sort of fasting diet for life to maintain.

There's a long running thread on here for people with a lot to lose which is a good place for support. I broke my goal down to small targets, ie if I lose x amount I will be lightest I've been this year, or since DC2 etc which made it all seem more manageable. Also take measurements and photos, I was shocked how much my tummy shrunk in those first few weeks it was very noticeable in the photos and kept me on track. Remember that even after losing a stone or 2 you will start to look and feel better.

At the start of the year I was 9 stone overweight with a bmi around 44, I'm now 3 stone overweight with a bmi of 32. Achieved through a combination of fasting and meal replacement but having had a week off last week for a holiday, Ive started fast800 as I miss real food. I really wouldn't discount fasting, particularly the fast800 version, as on a budget you are not paying out for meal replacement products and the rapid results keep you motivated. It also has lots of other health benefits. Good luck.

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 12:39

@ItWasTheBestOfTimes thank you so much. Lots of good advice there. Yes I do think a few replies were OTT, like I know it wasn't great but I don't think it was ridiculous- either way I know I need to make it better Smile

Definitely try the walking.
My inlaws neighbour started just walking around the block and 6 months later had lost a fair amount of weight and was walking several miles a few times a week.
With light nights its a good time to start.

KihoBebiluPute · 09/06/2021 13:01

Something I found really helpful at the beginning of my weight-loss journey was to buy a set of ankle weights which I wore to go for a walk which just slightly increased the effort required to move my legs and made the walk a more effective exercise. Later on once i had lost the first few stone I was able to start running, but having used the ankle weights for walking for a few months had really helped to strengthen my leg muscles and get me ready to ramp up the exercise when the time came.

StuffyHead · 09/06/2021 13:20

I have an iPhone and use HappyScale app which breaks it down into milestones so I just focus on the next one rather than the end weight.

JSL52 · 09/06/2021 13:29

I'm following now , not as much to
lose but still all need encouragement.
Definitely try the walking, you have a Fitbit I believe. Try and do an extra few hundred steps a day.
Is your child still in a pushchair?
If so just strap him in. It definitely gets easier.
Good luck.

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 13:35

@JSL52 yes still in a pushchair so I think Now's the best time to get out walking with him :) I do have a Fitbit!

Good luck OP, it's a long and difficult journey but the end result is so worth it! Rooting for you 😊

Youmeanyouvelostyourkey · 09/06/2021 13:46

I'm another one who is trying to avoid the surgery. Currently about 290lbs so will join you if that's ok.

I'm someone who is saving up to go to Turkey to have WLS, it will take several months to get there but I still want to get my weight down before I go in order to get myself in a better state physically.

My BMI is currently about 49, my HBA1C was terrible at my last blood test after having it under good control before lockdown and I have put on 10kg in the past year.

I've used MFP in the past and did well on it. I'm also interested in intermittent fasting. I just need a push to get started.

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 15:51

Pushing the pram is really hard work especially in the hot weather! Make sure you take water with you 🙏

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 20:17

What've we all had for tea tonight? I decided to skip the pasta and bacon I was going to do tonight and sent DP out to the shop.

I've had chicken grilled in the foreman on one of those Maggi so tender sheets. Roasted tenderstem broccoli and 4 small new pots with a bit of butter and herbs.

Really delicious and feel a lot better for it already Smile tried posting a pic but won't let me cause I'm new Sad
