I’ve gained a whopping 2 stone since March, and have an overall 3-4 stone to lose. This is a combination of : alcohol/crisps/general boredom snacking while WFH and a very sedentary lifestyle.

I used to walk 5-7k steps most days just going to work/out and about at weekends, but now seem to be glued to my office chair or sofa and am really feeling the ill-effects... also without the motivation of social life I have been less inclined to look after myself .

Does anyone want to join me on a push to be less sedentary (& eat healthily) to lose weight

My focus is:

  • 10k steps/day minimum
  • healthy (mostly unprocessed food) diet
  • limiting empty calories from alcohol & sugar

Just got a fit bit to count steps, & will be going for a walk/jog 1st thing to get most of my steps in, then making myself have a few other breaks in the day to get the numbers up

Feel for your Lars - only 11 days to go though! I've had a dodgy day too. Having recently (pretty much) retired, I've had a lot of desk work to do today, and it's made me realise just how static my 'normal' life was. Trying to get some steps going today, but it's now pretty much dark and rainy, so there'll be no walk today. Time to start lapping the house?

10kaDay · 20/01/2021 18:07

Its difficult Lars - hopefully this will be the absolute biggest deadline of year, & if you get back on it in 2 weeks time I expect you would maintain the progress you made

Can you do some of your walks/workouts at the weekends, or is it really every single waking hour?

OP posts:
LarsErickssong · 20/01/2021 20:36

I will have to do some over the weekend but should be able to get out for a decent walk both days still and will try and do a workout one day which is something at least!

MirandaWest · 20/01/2021 22:08

I got wet at lunch - thought the rain had stopped but it got heavier and heavier! Did mean I walked back pretty quickly!

10kaDay · 21/01/2021 17:10

Hi Ladies - 6K steps today (a 40 min workout & a 20 min walk), hoping to get the other 4K in by walking/pacing around the house today

I had the PERFECT wfh exercise idea yesterday... I had a call where I had to listen (with some attention) but not say much. I have 3 steps on the landing in my house so I grabbed a dining chair & put my laptop on it so eye level.

Then spent 40 mins stepping up & down the bottom of the steps (like it was a 90s aerobics steps). One seriously sweaty feel good workout, (but no so complicated I could not focus on what I needed to understand). Knocked out 300 calories, few K steps in that time & felt energised & great!

I needed a shower afterwards so that's something to consider but when the opportunity presents I will give it a go again (& might buy an aerobic step so I can do it in the office)

@10kaDay that's a fab way of getting steps, very innovative!

Another crap day steps wise for me but I feel more on top of my eating this week so hopefully some time soon I will be able to combine the two together and crack both at once Grin

10kaDay · 21/01/2021 21:39

It’s 80% food @LarsErickssong, & it’s impressive you are managing to keep on top of it food wise despite being super busy!

I’ve just ordered an (aerobics) step so I can step on/off while watching video calls or eg the news... it seems like a convenient way to step up the exercise intensity level/do short bursts of exercise...

I was pretty pleased with how I got on with food today ... shattered after a long day at work & 2 nights of bad sleep which normally sends me doolally for cheese. Instead of pizza & a million mozzarella sticks, I had a cauli cheese soup with extra kale, and 3 arancini (not something I’d normally go for, but a lot less evil than their cheesy brethren). 430 cals vs a squillion (I normally have 350-450 cals for dinner as big breakfast, fair lunch & a pre-dinner snack). Satisfied the craving and hopefully won’t have ruined the week’s efforts 🤞🏼

Morning all. Had a few bad days. My cat was ill overnight on Tuesday Sad so I didn't sleep very much (he's fine now). I was so tired I just couldn't face a walk or the bike however I am determined to at the very least do 10k steps today.

How is everyone else today?

10kaDay · 22/01/2021 13:31

Hello @KatherineJaneway: sorry to hear about your cat being ill - bad sleep is a killer, & always sends me to the snacks! I had a bad night's sleep on Tues too but seem to have recovered

Its beautiful out today, am hoping to dash out for 20 mins shortly to get my steps up: am at 7.6k so far today, based on a 40 min workout & then setting up my desk in the living room (ie putting a laptop stand on my mantelpiece) and pacing back/forth and side to side while on 2 hours of calls.... its a good multitasker and avoids sitting still for hours on end, and doesn't seem to impact my focus too much. I think measuring the steps on fit bit def makes it more motivating!

Hope you get your 10k in today , & everyone has a good day :)

Hello, I'm a bit late to the party here but the other thread I joined for those with more to lose has quietened down a bit & wonder if I could be adopted here please?

I have loads to lose, have never wanted the party to end & been over drinking, over eating & under-doing for some many years.

At the start of first lockdown I started 10k again & being better, lost a stone, started work & bad routine again & put on a stone & a half on top of far too many stones.

Anyhoo, been doing the 10k steps since start of Jan & so far on dry Jan & eating better. Trying not to obsess with scales & just instil the better habits but 9lb off so far & I'm delighted I've been able to achieve my goals so far even with the icy weather. I generally hate exercise but steps are achievable with audiobooks & I usually have Sundays off!

10kaDay · 22/01/2021 16:51

Welcome @buckeejit! 9 pounds off so far in January is great going, well done! I think you’ve hit the nail on the head - despite obstacles it’s generally possible to get some steps in, and it’s motivation re tackling food /workouts!

OP posts:
MirandaWest · 22/01/2021 18:36

I don’t think I’ve been losing weight but not gaining either. Doing lots of steps so does suggest if I cut back on sweets/chocolate a bit more I would lose some more weight. But I am OK with how my body is at the moment and I still fit in my clothes so I guess it’s OK Smile

10kaDay · 22/01/2021 21:00

@MirandaWest: I plan to keep up the steps regardless of weight, I feel much better for it and great for health too

Welcome @buckeejit

@10kaDay Yes, lack of sleep really affects my emergy level and mood. However I did manage 13k steps yesterday so that is a positive. Weather is meant to be nice today so, after my food delivery, I am off out for a walk to the local park.

Jemmy360 · 23/01/2021 08:15

Hi everyone, the weather and work and general crapness of January seems to be putting some obstacles in our way! This week has been busy work wise, and very wet so I don't think I'm going to hit 70k again, but will be happy with anything over 60k.

The family bought me a ring fit game for the switch as a present, and I was sceptical but my god did I sweat last night! We all played together as well so it was nice to have something a bit different to do.

Down another 4lbs this week. I have been ultra good with food so I'm happy. Am also 7cm down around my waist.

I've been reading different self help type books and news stories, which has never been my thing I always thought of it as being a bit woo; and I'm trying to visualise how I will feel in the future if I've lost weight. How I will feel wearing the beautiful dress in the wardrobe still with tags on, the boots that won't fit my cankles etc. These wellness lasses recon it works so I'm giving it a go.

Have a lovely week ahead everyone don't let January get you down.

buckeejit · 23/01/2021 09:15

@Jemmy360 please could you let me know if any of the self help books are great. I recently read untamed by Glennon Doyle which was great but then I was disappointed by a Brene Brown one after.

Interested in the ring fit. I hate exercise but may be good for the family for bad weather. I used to sort of like the wii fit.

Just been for my morning walk which is usually 4K now (up from a standard 3k a week ago). Lovely outside & dusted with snow here so added a bit on & done over 7k this morn which feels great for 9am, although I am going to sit on my bottom soon to watch 4-5hours of married at first sight Australia so needed.

Have good weekends all 😊

ajandjjmum · 23/01/2021 09:58

It's really interesting seeing how everyone else is doing, and the feelings and motivations behind them - this is a great thread - thank you @10kaDay and everyone for contributing.

As I need to loose weight and get fitter (my last HbA1c was in the diabetic range, and my GP has given me 6 weeks to improve before we have to take action), this thread has helped me in a way my family etc. can't - by sharing but not nagging!

I'm currently on a average of 11,247 steps for the past week, so hoping to keep it up. Some days are harder than others, but I am learning to adapt my walk according to how I'm feeling - and the ground conditions. Sticking to roadways at the moment, as the fields are sodden. Have also lost 10 lbs since the New Year, but not revolving around weight. Still eating sensibly, but within the 16:8 protocol, so essentially two meals a day, and snacking on babybel, almonds and hard boiled eggs.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

10kaDay · 23/01/2021 10:37

@Jemmy360 and @ajandjjmum - some great losses there, well done!

@ajandjjmum: thanks for the snacking ideas, idealise I do better with something mid-afternoon
@jemmy360 - for 4 pounds off I may give the visualisation a go too! Grin

Jemmy360 · 23/01/2021 13:23

Welcome @buckeejit, someone recommended Ann Lamotts TED talk about the 10 things she has learned in life and I fell down a Google rabbit hole after. I've been alcohol free for a while now and read a lot of sober literature when I gave up and to be honest a lot of it crosses over with food and the reasons we eat when we are not hungry or know the food is not good for us. I can't remember where it's from but some thing I read was " stop trying to plug internal holes with external things".

The ring fit is awesome, me and the teens are now in competition and my arms and legs feel like jelly.

@ajandjjmum I hear you about the diabetes fear. Both my parents and my brother have been diagnosed T2 within that last 18 months, all lifestyle related. I can see myself in the same position unless I do something about it.

Have a great week ahead everyone

buckeejit · 23/01/2021 13:46

Thanks @Jemmy360 - off to shop for ring fit now.

As they say round here, 'when the drink's in, the wit's out!' I can relate. I usually have a stuff it attitude even when sober so alcohol never helps me stay on track!

SunscreenCentral · 23/01/2021 14:23

Hi everybody! You’re all doing great booting January where it hurts...
I’ve been upping my steps a lot. Stopped posting as I wasn’t meeting the 10k but when I averaged it out, I was! So hello again.
I’m down 11lbs since beginning of Jan and that’s a combo of (almost) daily exercise, IF and calories in/out and alcohol free.... 😬
Goddammit I’m going to beat this weight gain by hook or by crook and I’m NEVER going to let it creep up so much again.

21lbs to go.

10kaDay · 23/01/2021 17:45

@SunscreenCentral: welcome back! And congratulations on the amazing results!

I would hate for anyone to think they can’t post if they are not doing 10k daily ... it’s just about making an effort to be more active

OP posts:
SunscreenCentral · 23/01/2021 18:39

Thank you 10kaDay 😊 I did 5k or so today but I got out for a nice cycle earlier.
I discovered exactly how much I need to do to close the green circle on my Apple watch

SunscreenCentral · 23/01/2021 18:40

I think you’re all amazing working on this stuff in literally the darkest of days 🌸

ajandjjmum · 23/01/2021 19:32

@SunscreenCentral We are all amazing - you included! Just got to keep pushing on, although God knows, there's times at the moment when it isn't easy. Love this thread though.
