Anyone starting tomorrow and not planning a ''quick fix''

Hello!

I have gained a shocking amount of weight and absolutely need to regain control of myself.

I do not need another drop-some-lbs-quickly-to-look-lovely-in-my-new-frock-diet. I think it is more serious than that for me now and I need to completely transform my relationship with food, as it has obviously become unhealthy.

I have come crawling back to dieting, (and to MN), to hopefully find some weight loss buddies.

I am planning to do the "No S Diet". The rules are:

  1. No sweet treats
  2. No second helpings
  3. No snacking between meals

Except on "S" days; Saturdays, Sundays and Special Days, (birthdays, Christmas etc).

On "S" days, the theory is that you stick to your three, square meals and also have a special treat or two over the weekend. It isn't that you can then eat a whole tub of ice cream every weekend or anything.

It is meant to be a lifelong plan, (aren't they all?), not a quick fix. So I am not expecting rapid weight loss. I honestly just need to stop gaining at such an alarming rate. Even if I stay as fat as I am, (and I am quite fat), I could live with it, but the rapid weight gain has scared me tbh! I have gained approximately two stone in less than a year SadBlushConfused. Two years ago, I had a normal BMI and I'd just had a baby. Now, I am on the cusp of obese.

I am circa 14 stone, (a few lbs under), and need to be circa 11 and a half stone. At this point, I'd settle for anything under 13! I am 36.

Would love some company Smile.

Hello!

Yes, I'm still posting Smile!

S day here too. We went for a lovely walk today. I have my first class since lockdown at the gym tomorrow. Nothing strenuous as frankly I couldn't take it!

Planning some meals for next week (already - yes I love food a bit too much Wink). Planning some vegan meals myself @Chicchicchicchiclana. Do you have a recipe for your biryani at all please?

OP posts:
Chicchicchicchiclana · 25/07/2020 20:43

It's the spiced vegetable biryani on the BBC Good Food site. Just halve the amount of rice (honestly, I am not a modest eater but if you read the comments on the thread below you'll see that the amount of rice in the recipe is just ridiculous). What is so fabulous about it is that it all cooks on one roasting tray in the oven.

LadyPrigsbottom · 25/07/2020 21:06

Thanks chic Flowers. Sounds amazing.

I had an ice-cream cone yesterday but no treats today. I'm into the routine of 16:8 now so I think I'll try to keep it going at weekends too for a while. It's not the most exciting thing I've ever done but never mind.
I'm off to look up that biryani recipe now-we've had a week of very boring dinners so I'd like a new recipe.

drspouse · 25/07/2020 23:33

I keep gaining and losing the same couple of lbs but I reckon at least I haven't put on loads in lockdown.

LadyPrigsbottom · 26/07/2020 16:03

Hi all!

@drspouse, I'd take that. I'd be happy enough to stay this weight. It's the gaining all the time which is the problem for me.

I've gone a bit wildcard, (I mean...this is the most BORING thing to be claiming to be a maverick over, but humour me Wink). I've downloaded the Paul McKenna app and I'm going to give it a try this week. Will try to keep up the No S too and might give 16:8 a go too... I'll see what happens. Not weighing in for another couple of weeks now, so I have some time to give something a try and see how I go.

Got to keep plodding!

Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend. Ours has been much like our week - trips to the park and walks in the woods!

RubySlippers77 · 26/07/2020 23:08

I know a couple of people who had great results with Paul McKenna @LadyPrigsbottom, you'll have to let us know what you think!

Thanks for the biryani recipe tip @Chicchicchicchiclana, I need to do some veg shopping, will make sure I have all the ingredients and give it a go. I made a lentil bolognese earlier to use up, well, lentils, and a load of spare veg - not wildly exciting but can freeze a couple of portions.

I had a large cookie today @WhistlersandJugglers Blush but have done a run and 15K steps altogether. Or that's how I am justifying the treat to myself anyway!

LadyPrigsbottom · 27/07/2020 09:13

Hey all!

Well, I did my morning check in on the PM app. I don't think it'll work with No S, as it says to eat when hungry, not hot of habit (ie mealtimes only), and also to leave food on your plate when you're full, which doesn't really tie in with what No S says about eating just one plate and using it as a psychological cue to stop eating when you see an empty plate. I am going to try anyway with the PM thing. See how I go. I will weigh in after a couple of weeks and see how it's going then.

15 k and a run is great @RubySlippers77! I have been so bad with exercise. But, my gym has just reopened, so I might brave it. Feels a bit weird though, even though they say they've cleaned like hell and keeping everyone socially distanced etc. Ah well, I'll give it a go anyway 😬. Walks with the kids just aren't exercise and if I go to the gym I am more motivated.

OP posts:
WhistlersandJugglers · 27/07/2020 16:22

I didn't go for a walk today and I had chips for lunch. I stuck to the 16:8 over the weekend but I just woke up today feeling very physically tired and not in the mood for sensible eating. I'm going to lounge for the evening and get back at healthy living tomorrow.

LadyPrigsbottom · 27/07/2020 16:29

Fair enough @WhistlersandJugglers. Everyone has those days!

All fine here so far. I had 2 x boiled eggs for breakfast and a chicken, avocado and tomato baguette for lunch. No snacks so far, as I haven't needed them.

Went for a walk with dcs earlier and a play at the park. Dc1 and I just did a couple of Cosmic Kids yoga sessions too.

I'm not sure about the gym. Just noticed I can freeze my membership from now till October, so I might do that. All the classes I want to do aren't running, so it seems a bit pointless. Maybe I'll give C25K another go.

OP posts:
Chicchicchicchiclana · 27/07/2020 20:17

I honestly think the key to weight loss is "get back on it if you fuck up" so write today off entirely, forget about it, and tomorrow is another day Whistlers.

The people who don't throw the towel in seem to be the people who get results.

LadyPrigsbottom · 27/07/2020 20:21

Totally agree @Chicchicchicchiclana. Everyone has off days. The key is to keep going afterwards. That's why I wanted to start this thread really, to find people who are in it for the long term.

I'm feeling fairly motivated at the moment...trying to stay in that zone!

OP posts:
Chicchicchicchiclana · 27/07/2020 20:39

Me too LadyPB! Even though I have just polished off a not small portion of spaghetti bolognese.

As an aside and just to be accountable - my S treats over the weekend were snack - small packet of plain ready salted kettle crisps on Saturday, and seconds - 1 extra roast potato on Sunday.

Otherwise I am sticking with smaller portions, no snacks, no sugar, only 2 meals a day eaten between 12pm and 8pm, more veg, slightly more fruit (1 piece per day up from 0 per day).

And I've got my bike out of the shed, dusted it down, taken it out on a couple of extremely short and gentle rides, and booked in for a proper service .

I think we all have to find the way that works for us but I am very firmly in the camp that slowly and surely is better than a quick fix.

Positive thoughts for the week ahead Smile to all.

LadyPrigsbottom · 28/07/2020 19:02

Hey all!

How is everyone?

I've had a crap day with food and also last night Blush. I have no idea what's happened. I was feeling so motivated. T'was the evening munch attack!

Thinking I might try 16:8, so this shouldn't be able to happen...?

I had a lovely day out with dcs today and, shocker, it actually DIDN'T involve a walk in the fucking woods ShockGrin. Shouldn't complain about the woods really. They have kept us sane through lockdown!

Anyway, onwards and upwards hopefully not the number on the scales Blush, but actually, that is quite likely.

New challenges I am setting myself, for healthy living; I am going to try and do some form of exercise, (not including the aforementioned walks with dcs), every day. I'm also thinking I might do a dry August, but start now. Well, technically, the last time I drank any alcohol was on Saturday, when I had a teeny glass of champagne, so, starting last week. Is that 6 weeks till the end of August? 5 weeks? Well, whatever it is, I might do that.

Paul McKenna was a non starter, as I ran into a slight tech issue, which I don't think I'm going to be able to fix any time soon, so I'm putting that to one side for the moment.

Anyway, excuse the slightly mad ramble^^!

Hope everyone else is ok.

WhistlersandJugglers · 28/07/2020 21:01

I'm back on track with eating today but had a magnum ice-cream last night. I was glued to the couch. Yesterday was the first day in ages where I didn't get outside at all but I think I needed it because I feel fairly energetic today. I went for a walk and I did a bit of weeding and I'm counting that as today's exercise.
A new challenge for August is a good idea, @LadyPrigsbottom. I haven't plucked my eyebrows since lockdown started and if I could stick to an August challenge I would reward myself by getting them done properly.
Has anyone ever tried a plank challenge? My middle is definitely my worst area so I might give one a go. I can only hold a plank for about 15 seconds atm.

LadyPrigsbottom · 28/07/2020 21:10

Oh no, I haven't done a plank challenge. What is the aim please @WhistlersandJugglers?

Well done on getting back on track Star.

I used to do quite a lot of yoga, so my planks were pretty solid then. My middle is awful at the mo and my upper body strength is equally bad!

I might challenge myself to lose half a stone, so down to 13 st 2 and then I'll get something nice. Maybe a new handbag.

I just feel wrecked at the moment! Probably not helped by being so overweight tbf Blush. Ah well, got to keep on keeping on!

OP posts:
WhistlersandJugglers · 31/07/2020 09:38

I'm going to do planks 4 time a week for August. I got a fitness magazine and there's a plank workout with 4 different variations of plank for different muscles. My legs are toned from walking but my midriff is a disaster zone. I think my clothes would be more comfortable if I could lose an inch by being more toned.
So I'm 10st3lbs now on the last day of July. The aim for August is to get under 10st and stick to the plank challenge.

LadyPrigsbottom · 31/07/2020 10:07

My legs aren't what they used to be, but considering my distinct lack of exercise recently, they look a lot better than they should! I have a serious mum tum and the classic CS belly. It really needs some work, but I'm so tired all the damn time at the moment. I fell asleep on the sofa at about 9 last night and got woken up by DH to go to bed at 11, where I fell sound asleep again and stayed that way till 8.30! Wtf is that??

Anyway, I am going to say to DH and dcs that 7 - 8, one or two days in the week, is my exercise time. I might have to use the tv etc. They can find something else to do. I can find an hour a day on Saturdays and Sundays. I would be happy with 3 - 4 hours of exercise a week, plus walks with dcs.

I have a grocery delivery booked for Monday. I'm trying to avoid processed food as much as possible, so bread, pasta, junk food etc. Will see how that goes. Will fit in fine with No S as well, as the bad snack foods are also processed.

Anyway, happy friday everyone! Hope everyone has something nice planned for the weekend.

OP posts:
WhistlersandJugglers · 31/07/2020 10:43

I have the CS belly and shelf too. It's a nuisance. It has been better in the past when I was going to pilates regularly.
Ironically my teen DS can hold a plank longer than any other boy on his sports team. He has abs of steel. He doesn't exercise outside of training and eats about 8 meals a day. Oh, to be young.

LadyPrigsbottom · 31/07/2020 10:51

Ugh, my (male) best friend is like that @WhistlersandJugglers! He is 36, but can hold a plank all fecking day if he so wishes. In our defence, I think men do tend to be better at planks. It's their upper body strength, definitely not my tendency to overeat and do fuck all exercise. My friend can't do squats to save his life! Ha Wink!

OP posts:
LadyPrigsbottom · 31/07/2020 13:37

I have just done an hour of yoga Halo. Feeling very smug, (misplaced, seeing as it is one session in a sea of days off Blush, but you know).

OP posts:
LadyPrigsbottom · 02/08/2020 11:37

I have just done my first C25K, (well, second time around, but starting back at the beginning, for obvious reasons - unfitness).

It went ok. It wasn't easy peasy or super fun, but it was fine.

So far alright with food today. Boiled eggs and brown bread soldiers for breakfast and a couple of Brews.

I have a grocery order, due to arrive tomorrow morning, so I'm planning to do some batch cooking etc when it arrives.

Dc1 has an activity starting tomorrow and is going to be every morning till the weekend. I'm excited it's running and I know they are being very sensible re cleaning, reduced numbers, staggered drop offs etc, but I'm a bit apprehensive tbh! Bloody new normal, is very anxious making! Anyway, I'm sure it'll be fine. Dc1 went to school for weeks and I wasn't worried, so I'm sure this is all just me.

Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend!

OP posts:
WhistlersandJugglers · 02/08/2020 18:32

Well done on starting the C25K.
I'm having a bit of a busy weekend but got a long walk in yesterday and going to start planking this evening when the house quietens down a bit. It wasn't the most healthy food wise but I'm done for the day and back on the 16:8 from now.
I totally know what you mean with being nervous about activities. I let sporty DS back to his training though as he needs the outlet. I'm going to see about swimming for DD this week too to get her out of the house for a bit.

LadyPrigsbottom · 02/08/2020 19:56

Thanks @WhistlersandJugglers.

Dc2 is due to start nursery in September and dc1 is supposed to be back at school with loads of kids, so I suppose I need to get used to them doing stuff out of the house. And, tbf, it's a lot better now than just before lockdown when we were out and about quite a lot.
