Hello!

I have gained a shocking amount of weight and absolutely need to regain control of myself.

I do not need another drop-some-lbs-quickly-to-look-lovely-in-my-new-frock-diet. I think it is more serious than that for me now and I need to completely transform my relationship with food, as it has obviously become unhealthy.

I have come crawling back to dieting, (and to MN), to hopefully find some weight loss buddies.

I am planning to do the "No S Diet". The rules are:

  1. No sweet treats
  2. No second helpings
  3. No snacking between meals

Except on "S" days; Saturdays, Sundays and Special Days, (birthdays, Christmas etc).

On "S" days, the theory is that you stick to your three, square meals and also have a special treat or two over the weekend. It isn't that you can then eat a whole tub of ice cream every weekend or anything.

It is meant to be a lifelong plan, (aren't they all?), not a quick fix. So I am not expecting rapid weight loss. I honestly just need to stop gaining at such an alarming rate. Even if I stay as fat as I am, (and I am quite fat), I could live with it, but the rapid weight gain has scared me tbh! I have gained approximately two stone in less than a year SadBlushConfused. Two years ago, I had a normal BMI and I'd just had a baby. Now, I am on the cusp of obese.

I am circa 14 stone, (a few lbs under), and need to be circa 11 and a half stone. At this point, I'd settle for anything under 13! I am 36.

Would love some company Smile.

I think it's hard to achieve anything in August. I always have kind of a dog days of summer feeling this time of year. Then in September when school is properly back I get a burst of energy.
My blood pressure is borderline high too, @drspouse. I'm due to get it rechecked in 3 months and I'm hoping weight loss will help but it's probably mostly genetic. I'm having mid morning toast and coffee now which isn't ideal but I'm not sleeping well in the heat so had a crazy early breakfast. I know it should probably be a healthy protein based snack but sometimes you just need toast.

LadyPrigsbottom · 11/08/2020 11:42

@drspouse, 1500 sounds low enough to me. Could you up that a little and still lose weight, just a bit slower? I might count calories one day soon, just out of interest!

OP posts:
drspouse · 11/08/2020 12:21

Correction, 1600. Still get really hungry though!

LadyPrigsbottom · 11/08/2020 12:25

Did you work out how much you need to lose weight, even if it's slow? Maybe you could have a hundred or so more, if you're feeling hungry?

You could also switch to maintainence calories for a week to have a break, but hopefully not gain anything?

Excuse all the question Mark's? It's like I'm one of those reality tv stars? Who always sound as if they're asking a question? Even when they're not? Grin

Ahem. Sorry about that^^. Think the heat is getting to me 🤪🥵.

OP posts:
drspouse · 11/08/2020 12:49

It's the MFP setting for 1/2 lb per week. If I have stuck to it in the past it's worked but I'm finding it so hard to stick to it due to being STARVING.

LadyPrigsbottom · 11/08/2020 20:43

Hmmmm that's really tricky @drspouse... I may log my calories tomorrow, just out of curiosity. I am confident it is a lot more than 1600 a day Blush. But maybe because in heavier, I need more to even lose a bit of weight if that makes sense?

I've (stupidly) got a pavlova in the oven. I had some eggs which were a bit past it, so used them by making it. I think meringue keeps well though, so, theoretically I can wait till weekend to add fruit and eat it! Or, I could just give it to DH and dcs and not have any.

OP posts:
drspouse · 11/08/2020 20:47

Did better today - wouldn't mind another snack but I'm not starving, I was planning a snack mid morning but I forgot (I had to go into the office for the third time since March and I was really busy). But by lunch I was ready to eat my own arm! Been better this afternoon and DH made a tasty tea but not huge portions.

LadyPrigsbottom · 12/08/2020 10:05

Ah, well done drspouse!

I have woken up, for the first time in weeks, feeling fairly motivated.

I've just had some cold porridge with yoghurt and raisins, with a cup of tea and loads of water.

Need to do my C25K today, but will have to wait till it's cool enough.

It's been bloody hot here this week! I'm in the SE England.

OP posts:
drspouse · 12/08/2020 10:23

I'm in the NW and the air last night was like walking through treacle.

LadyPrigsbottom · 12/08/2020 10:30

Ugh, yes, that is exactly the right description! Same here. It feels better this morning, but mornings seem to be the best time. It's late afternoon we seem to get the worst of it.

OP posts:
WhistlersandJugglers · 13/08/2020 15:10

I got up early and went for my normal walk but it's so hot my feet still feel tired now.
I never got going with the planks this week either but I think just getting out for a walk will do until the weather breaks.
I generally like the heat but it just seems to be ridiculously humid where I am.

Saraban · 13/08/2020 15:20

@drspouse - I freely admit I’m not a doctor or a nutritionist, so take this with a pinch of salt (ha!) but reading through what you’re eating in a day, it sounds like a lot of carbs and not a lot of protein or fat. Both of these are more satiating than carbs, so you feel fuller for longer - this could be why mid morning, and again after lunch, you find yourself starving.

Maybe increase the protein and see how you get on? So for breakfast, a couple of scrambled eggs rather than the porridge (which weirdly, always leaves me ravenous by 11am too, no matter how full I am straight after eating it.) For the salad, maybe swap the bread and butter you have it with with a tin of tuna or some chicken breast. Similarly, for the snacks - rather than bread and butter, how about a small piece of cheese? Babybel Lights are only 40cals but there’s something about them (the fat, I suppose) that I find tides me over between meals. You do feel like a 6 year old eating them, though...

I’m not saying cut out carbs entirely (I’m planning pasta for dinner myself) but maybe try not to base your diet on them so much and see if that makes a difference?

drspouse · 13/08/2020 16:28

Thanks @Saraban - I do find that type of diet really impractical TBH as it's so different to what the rest of the family eat.
I do sometimes have an omelette for breakfast, but cooking them while refereeing two small DCs means something either gets burned or thumped, hence the reliance on quick things. And an omelette does not last me more than an hour or two unless I have a piece of toast with it.
And there isn't much that the DCs will eat that's not carb-heavy, which leaves lunch, could do more there but again, if I'm eating with the DCs, I can't really bake a chicken breast for me and do sandwiches for them. I do more creative lunches when it's just me.

Even nut/fruit mixes (or plain nuts) don't really keep me going and I'm really not sure why that is! Can't really see myself snacking on Babybels and peperami either!

Yesterday was quite a similar day to Monday, and my MFP profile shows I was quite a bit under on my protein, though. So there's room for improvement there. Maybe I should start another thread.

WhistlersandJugglers · 13/08/2020 22:13

I think I probably could lose weight faster if I did lower carb but my reasoning for not doing it is that I'd know I'd hate it so if I lost weight that way I'd just go back to my normal eating eventually and put any weight lost back on.
I'm still 10st2lb this week so 6lbs down since I joined the thread. I'm still eating bread every day and pasta a couple of times a week because everyone in the house loves it. I feel good doing the 16:8 and avoiding crisps and late night crackers and other junk. I can imagine eating like this most of the time long term.

drspouse · 14/08/2020 08:27

Actually my overnight oats is 15g protein and a two egg omelette is 12 so the other meals need tweaking now!

LadyPrigsbottom · 15/08/2020 17:22

Hello, hello!

How is everyone?

Sorry for the sporadic posting!

Re having more protein and less carbohydrate, yes, that's a tweak I'm definitely trying to make to my diet. Definitely trying to eat fewer processed carbs and more whole foods. My eternally slim friend swears by that and it seems to work for her! You will prize my occasional hunkf bread out of my cold dead hands though Grin.

Oh yes, if I make sourdough I WILL be eating it.

LadyPrigsbottom · 15/08/2020 20:27

I have just been gifted a sourdough starter mix! So, it would be rude not to really...Grin. Otherwise I'm just feeding the damn thing and it's more of a pet than a food!

OP posts:
WhistlersandJugglers · 15/08/2020 21:07

That made me smile @LadyPrigsbottom. I'm picturing you out for a nice walk with the sourdough pet.

WrappedInBitsOfSilver · 16/08/2020 08:17

Hi 👋🏻

I’ve been plodding along trying to make this work for me. Last week I was making myself have breakfast, even though I’m not a breakfast person really, to try and get myself into 3 meals and no snacks. But I felt horrible so I tried just having 2 meals (substantial enough to keep me going) and that seems to be going well. I get a bit nibbly in the evening but it’s just habit and I’m not actually hungry. Yesterday I had scrambled eggs on toast for lunch and home made patatas bravas with some salad for tea. Then because it was an S day, I made a chocolate mug cake and had it with a scoop of ice cream - yummy!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 17/08/2020 15:15

Hello slow losers! I haven't posted for ages but have basically stuck with the programme and think I might have lost a tiny bit of weight, maybe a couple of pounds, but as I won't weigh myself, I won't know! So this is something I must address!

I have been very good about no S, I find it incredibly easy as I don't have a natural sweet tooth. So all I have to do is resist snacks - again not too bad - and seconds.

Last weekend we were away for 3 days staying with my inlaws. My mil is a great cook and a feeder, so I ate loads Grin and came away feeling greedy and sluggish. I wouldn't be surprised if I gained back all the weight I might have lost in the preceding 4 or 5 weeks in that weekend!

This is what weight loss is like for me - 2 steps forward, 2 steps back.

Anyway, here we are on a Monday again and I am sticking with it. Must confess to one cheat today though - DH came back from the shops with a bag of these new giant cheesey Wotsits. I could not resist. I had ONE wotsit, and can confirm it was indeed giant sized.

Good to see most of us are all still trundling on Brew.

WhistlersandJugglers · 18/08/2020 21:13

I'm not being very dedicated this week. I'm still doing 16:8 but have had sugar. My kids have stuff on almost every day this week-we're not back to school yet. I've been in the car a lot and skipped lunch and then bought petrol station food.
I'm not too worried as it's almost back to proper routine time. Once I'm doing school drop offs I think it will be easier to have a set time for exercise and stick to it.

RubySlippers77 · 20/08/2020 23:07

I am indeed trundling @Chicchicchicchiclana Grin my MIL is a feeder too - you can't be in her house for more than five minutes before she offers you a sandwich/ snack/ meal! - thankfully she's close enough though that we can pop in for a while, not stay over.

Have you tried making any sourdough yet @LadyPrigsbottom?

I'm struggling to find my routine again @WhistlersandJugglers, and like you say, it's hard when you know that (hopefully!) we're almost back to school time and things will change. I've felt rotten all week which hasn't helped - AF is a few days late and I'm just exhausted. More sleep and less chocolate needed to get back on the right track...

LadyPrigsbottom · 21/08/2020 08:33

Hi all!

Excuse lack of posting.

Trundling along, loosely following the plan. We had a special occasion in our hous yesterday, so it was an S Day with champagne and probably way too much food! Feeling a bit pudgy and sluggish now, but that's food motivation to get back on it today.

I weighed myself first thing and I'm 13 stone 10, so a lb down in two weeks, which is a lot better than it could be, but I haven't been strict enough for the past month basically! I might re read the book to remind myself why I'm doing it.

I haven't made sourdough yet, but I might today actually, as we have no bread!

Starting this morning with branflakes and juice! Will probably have about 3 million teas and coffees today as didn't sleep well after the champagne and also a very windy night, (the weather, not me)! Kept hearing it and thinking the kids had woken up and were yelling for me! Must've happened about 5 times in the night. Ah well, at least it's weekend and it's DH's last day of work today for a two week holiday. Not that we're going away, but still, will be fun.

Hope everyone else is doing well.

My MIL is not that much of a feeder. She offers, but doesn't push food iyswim. My mum and gran did that though and I always came away from their houses feeling about a stone heavier!
