EightToSixer your basal metabolic rate is what you burn just by being alive so it doesn't include any movement at all, anything you do in the day will increase the number of calories you burn even gettin dressed in the morning, making a cup of tea etc. The more you weight the more calories your body needs just to exist. There is a theory that if you eat below your bmr your body goes into starvation mode and holds onto fat rather than burning it as its preserving stores because it thinks there isn't enough food. I dont know enough about starvation mode or where you should pitch your calories. I have found eating what mfp allows me has allowed me to lose weight at a good rate, others find they need low carbs to lose weight and others are eating more to keep out of starvation mode so I think you should find what you are comfortable eating and that gives you a weightloss per week you're happy with a stick to it. If things aren't going so well for a week or two then perhaps tweak what you're doing. My dh is always telling me I should have a cheat day to up calories and jump start my body into losing but I've found by just allowing myself the things I want little and often I have stayed within calories and not felt the need for a cheat day to stuff my face like a crazy person. Someone else will probably come along now with a totally different theory! Have a look on the thread about eating well to lose weight on here, the lady who started it links to lots of interesting websites if you want to know more. This should link to it.

GeekLove · 15/07/2012 09:28

BMR calculator is here
Min comes in at 1422 so my BMR guess wasnt far off.
As has already been said this is how many calories you spend sleeping and breathing - a 'duvet day' as it was.

ihatethecold · 15/07/2012 09:38

this is very interesting, my bmr is calculated at 1893, my mfp is at 1210, although its way too low for me.

i usually eat about 1450 a day but in over a month i have not shifted a pound !

i have lost inches but no weight.

maybe the scales are knackered Grin

EightToSixer · 15/07/2012 09:43

Thanks, so, would it make sense, to do the MFP diet, but make sure you do enough daily additional exercise for it to allow you the 500 or so extra calories to be eating enough to be at yourBMR, but still be low enough to make MFP happy?
I've stuck to MFP for over a month and only lost 3kg, I thought it was because it was allowing me too few calories, but maybe it's not enough?
I'll take a look at that link too cinnamon, thank you

EightToSixer · 15/07/2012 09:45

Also, just to confuse things, surely that wouldn't work if you see the results on Biggest Loser or somewhere where they lose huge amounts of weight by eating low fat and healthily but doing bucket loads of exercise. I'm confused.

ihatethecold · 15/07/2012 09:45

oops got that wrong, ive added the extra bit, my mfp without moving is 1376

ihatethecold · 15/07/2012 11:58

after reading the other thread called dont starve, it talks about tdee, what does this stand for. how do i calculate it?

cinnamongreyhound · 15/07/2012 12:02

Total daily expended energy, there's a calculator here

cinnamongreyhound · 15/07/2012 12:04

EightToSixer 3 Kg in just over a month is pretty good, that's 6 1/2 lb and most people hope to lose 1-2lb a week.

ihatethecold · 15/07/2012 12:38

thanks cinnamon.

RGPargy · 15/07/2012 16:26

My bmr is 1750 and my mfp is 1720 so it's pretty spot on really! Grin

BsshBossh · 15/07/2012 16:44

I'm not 100% sure of the eat more philosophy in terms of science but so far it's working for me. I never eat below BMR and if exercise takes me below BMR for the day then I will eat more that day. As it is I am eating at 15% below my TDEE so 1800 cals but on exercise days I add an extra 200 cals. On this I lost 18 pounds in just over a month. Because I've now increased my exercise I have increased calories to 2000 a day as recommended by the site linked to above (fitness frog) but this allows for my level of exercise so I will not "eat back my exercise cals" in MFP. Time will tell if I continue to lose weight. The one thing I know is that on 1800/2000 cals a day I am not hungry at all and so am likely not to deviate from this diet. When I was on 1200 cals I couldn't stick to it and ended up binge eating.

EightToSixer · 15/07/2012 16:55

Well that's an hours walk on the beach followed by day 1 level 1 of 30DS. If I don't Lose weight tomorrow when I weigh I won't be amused!
I see what you mean about the hurty muscles after 30DS. My arms and shoulders are already sore after the half pushups Avignon not been used in 20 or more years! One day il be able to do a proper pushup!

RGPargy · 15/07/2012 17:32

I still can't do a full press up Blush but i put it down to being just over 16 stone a d being too bloody heavy despite all the pump I do!!

RGPargy · 17/07/2012 00:11

Have I killed the thread?? Blush

karatekimmi · 17/07/2012 02:53

I was wondering that!!! Thought my iPhone was playing up rgpargy

Congrats on the 200 log ins! I have had a weekend with my sister, so not too good, buy we were fairly active, I will find out on Wednesday what gne result is! Anyway back on track now, my DH is a little shocked at the scales, so we're are both trying to lose weight, and he's decided he wants to start running too! This might not end well!!

tostaky · 17/07/2012 06:22

Karate - my Dh is getting a belly too but is super busy at work... So I'll wait until Thursday to hint about his fitness regime...! Not fun getting olderGrin

So how often do you lot weight yourself? I do it every morning before breakfast but it is too much. I've decided to weight myself every 5 days now so I'm in synch with mfp telling me how many days I've been doing.

cinnamongreyhound · 17/07/2012 06:56

No you didn't RGPargy just nothing specific to say! I can always talk even when virtual talking but mostly not have anything to say Wink. I used to go to an aerobics class where we had to do push ups, was around 13 st then and the woman who ran it was quite scary! She made me try a full push up and I managed to get upto 3 in a row. Not tried for a while, although yesterday I discovered I could see my pecs!!!! My upper body is much more muscular since running and obviously losing weight helps me see it, just sad my boobs are well below them now!!

Still maintaining at 62.6 kg despite not increasing my calories Hmm. Went to my running group last night and did sprint relays, my legs are killing me this morning! Hopefully improve my running time :)

RGPargy · 17/07/2012 09:30

Oh hooray!! The thread is alive again! Lol Grin

I weigh myself every day which I now is bad but the scales have gone up daily for the past few days on the trot so it might not be such a bad thing for me..... Hmm

No exercise today - my knee is a bit sore. Funnily enough it wasn't the 21 mile bike ride that did it. It was combat as I felt it starting to twinge during the class. Will go to balance tonight tho as its my instructor friend's birthday today. Deffo no Zumba today tho! I think that combat and zumba are two of the classes that aggravate my knee as they're so "jumpy" and high impact. I know step can do it too but not as much as there isn't much jumping around. I'm beginning to think that the best thing for me to do exercise wise is pump, spin and a bit of step. Nothing too jumpy. (not until ive lost 6stone anyway!!) Hmm

karatekimmi · 17/07/2012 10:27

I weigh myself "officially" on wednesday and Sunday mornings as I find if I go off track it makes me get back quicker.

I did Jillian michaels ripped in 30 again today and am going to start the c25k plan ( although need to keep telling myself to build up slowly as have run half marathons in the past and think I'll be wanting to run before I can walk so o speak! I loved runs longer than an hour, the first 30 minutes was hell, so need to look at the big picture!)

Back to tracking properly on mfp!

BsshBossh · 17/07/2012 10:34

I weigh every 3 weeks or so.

snapespeare · 17/07/2012 11:20

Popping in to I've been dukan/low carbing...and I've lost 19lbs in six weeks. Just reintroduced some whole meal seeded bread for breakfast as I'm upping my cardio. Have tried on all the dress that looked like potato sacks 2 months ago and have just ordered a size 14 dress from dottie Perkins as an incentive. :).

Thank you all for your support, this is so much more fun when thee are other people involved. :)

ihatethecold · 17/07/2012 14:18

got my bike back off my MIL the other day, so ive been out for a couple of quick fast bike rides.. my poor backside though! Sad

its just not used to a bike saddle anymore, don think i will be going on it tonight.

on a plus note, my clothes are feeling more loose. [happy]

MonsterBookOfTysons · 17/07/2012 18:54

Marking place, I have had a nice day today but have had Wine
I am 10st 2.4lbs atm, hoping for 10st by August 1st :)
Newbies feel free to add me, same name as on here :)

EightToSixer · 17/07/2012 19:27

Got some new scales as I was hopeful that the wii fit ones were faulty and I wasn't staying the same weight. They're not! So ive been doing MFP for 5 weeks with no success and exercising daily for 10 days too with no effect. I have LOTS to lose so I should be dropping weight quite quickly at the start?
On the plus side, I'm eating more healthily and exercising, which are now lifestyle changes not diets really and my clothes are looser. As long as someone tells my scales that soon, it'll be grand :)
