Get some xanthan gum - you'll find it in the "free from" section of the supermarket.

and it tastes like a badgers arse Grin

im struggling with calories and carbs.

as i have started going to the gym, all the machines measure energy used in calories - of course they do - this makes sense

this has nudged me to look at calories as well as carbs on the back of the packet.

i have just had lunch of
2 slices of salami
2 cherry tomatos
1 spring onion
iceberg lettuce
cheese

at the most this is 5 carbs

but calories is 120 calories.

this is the equiv of 30 - 40 gym time - for a fecking salad!

what the actual fuck?

GetOrfMoiiLand · 08/03/2012 12:50

I am actually starting to think that the solution is not to eat at all.

Just live on cups of tea, diet coke and a kit kat a day. And start smoking.

CointreauVersial · 08/03/2012 12:54

QS, you can buy ready-ground flaxseed in Holland & Barrett. Not cheap, mind.

Kandinsky - for tomorrow night's dinner, how about chicken breast or boneless thigh stuffed with something cheesy/herby, then wrapped in bacon/ham? With salad or veggies. Or saute some diced chicken with butter and tarragon, slosh in some cream to make a sauce (from Pig to Twig)?

QueenStromba · 08/03/2012 12:55

Yes but 115 of those calories is the salami. Also, 120 calories is bugger all really - my salads are closer to 600. If you're still losing weight I wouldn't worry about the calories anyway.

It's £4 a kilo in Tescos so the grinder has probably paid for itself already. It's also good for grinding spices for curries.

OP posts:
TheRealMrsHannigan · 08/03/2012 12:58

Well I successfully picked out the sweetcorn Grin, was the rest ok for a low carb meal? Ned to make sure I'm on track! I've printed a list of low carb foods from the net to stick on my fridge too, I'll take it shopping with me tonight.

CointreauVersial · 08/03/2012 13:00

Custy, step away from the calorie counting. It will only bring you pain.

GOML - have you been watching Supersize Superskinny? That's what the skinnies live on. The skinny girl on last night looked about 50; she was so wizened and pale. But the supersizer - OMG.......

QueenStromba · 08/03/2012 13:04

The madras recipe I looked at was low carb so that should be fine. What plan are you following? If you're on Atkins induction then it might have been a bit carby depending on how much onion and pepper you had but most other plans it would be fine.

OP posts:
QueenStromba · 08/03/2012 13:06

Yeah, the good thing about being fat is the wrinkles don't show up so much Grin

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiiLand · 08/03/2012 13:12

No, I keep missing Supersize, and keep forgetting to record it.

I did see a picture of the skinny girl and was amazed that she was in her 20s - like you say she looks wizened and old.

MissWooWoo · 08/03/2012 13:15

anyone got any tips on how to cook a pork chop (no bone) so that it isn't dry? PP or PV either way will do.

TheRealMrsHannigan · 08/03/2012 13:16

I ahvent chosen a particular plan, was just hoping low carb in general would help me shed some weight, is everyone on here on a particular plan then?

I will bear in mind to limit onions and peppers in future, I had very little onion, maybe two thin slivers, and about 6 -8 sticks of sauteed pepper.

Tortington · 08/03/2012 13:20

life isn't worth living without onion, pepper and garlic.

I keep looking at the cals.

If i took out the salami - i would end up with toms and lettuce

why is god so cruel? toms 1 cal - high carb
salami - million cal - low carb

GetOrfMoiiLand · 08/03/2012 13:24

I am counting cals as well as low carbing. Sticking to around 1200 a day.

All I want to do is be able to drink Options hot chocolate but it is full of bloody carbs but about 20 cals.

I had a handful of macadamia nuts the other day - I may as well have eaten lard.

Tortington · 08/03/2012 13:31

"I had a handful of macadamia nuts the other day - I may as well have eaten lard."
Grin

i am going to try the vodie soda cheap option there GOML ty for that

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 08/03/2012 13:34

I dont think you can low carb and low cal - the two dont go hand in hand together.

I am doing a beef casserole this evening, looking forward to it. Had scrambled eggs for brunch as I wasnt v hungry earlier.

QueenStromba · 08/03/2012 13:37

MissWooWoo - you might want to try a trick I use for chicken which is mix whatever spices you want with some natural yoghurt then coat the pork chop in that, wrap in tin foil and then cook it in the oven. Chicken comes out lovely like that but I've not tried it with pork - I don't see why it wouldn't work though.

TheRealMrsHannigan - a lot of us aren't doing a particular plan. I just started by cutting out grains and starchy veg and eating more lean protein but I was still eating up to 100g of carbs a day. I've ended up eating more like Atkins which is very low carb and high fat. I think if you want to be able to eat cream, cheese, butter and bacon you need to go pretty low carb but if you're happy limiting your fat you can get away with slightly more carbs. I felt more like I was on a diet with the lower fat so it wasn't really sustainable but I think I'll be perfectly happy to eat the way I'm eating now for the rest of my life.

OP posts:
MissWooWoo · 08/03/2012 13:41

thanks QueenStromba that sounds perfect ... paprika and garlic would work I think

GetOrfMoiiLand · 08/03/2012 13:42

I am not strict strict low carb - am not going into ketosis for instance. Eating a lot of veg.

Which is probably why my wieghtloss is taking so long tbh.

I never even thought of flavoured vodkas queenstromba - that would make a change, especially thiose lovely absolut ones.

custy you may need to nag the tight barmen when they only give you one lime slice, I always have to nag them to put loads in.

TheRealMrsHannigan · 08/03/2012 14:03

I think I would lean more to Atkins as well then, I do love potatoes for instance but could probably cope better without them knowing I could have 'naughty' foods like bacon, cheese etc.

Are diet drinks like Pepsi Max etc ok?

QueenStromba · 08/03/2012 14:23

Let me know how it turns out MissWooWoo.

Asda have the flavoured Absoluts for £14 at the moment and the flavoured Smirnoffs are £13 GOML.

I avoid diet drinks because they're full of all sorts of crap and can keep a sweet tooth going.

OP posts:
PrincessTamTam · 08/03/2012 14:32

What IS xanthan gum???Have always wondered...
Diet drinks are good in small quantities at the beginning when you are having insane sugar cravings... but Queen is right they have to be phased out or can keep your cravings going.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 08/03/2012 14:54

I used to drink a lot of diet coke - I have now cut right down, have a can every couple of days or so.

I do have a diet red bbull before exercising as well.

What I have found that helps is to have a 750ml sports bottle of water on my desk, and every time I fill it up I drop 1/4 berocca tablet in it. I can't stand the taste of water and this fizzes the water up a bit and gives it a slight orangey taste. And that way I get end up drinking 3L of water every day and piss like a racehorse

BIWI · 08/03/2012 18:50

Re stew and thickening - no need to thicken with anything. Just turn the heat up until the sauce reduces to the consistency you want.

Like Queen, I also avoid diet drinks. I don't like the idea of all the artificial additives (some really eye-opening stuff about them in Dr Briffa's books), and some people apparently respond to them as if they are drinking sugar. So since I re-started properly on this WOE I have been drinking only coffee (3-4 cups a day, with milk) and water.
