Dress size vs weight?

A.I.B.U. To not understand this? - lots of people talk in terms of being a size 16 and that being overweight and others as size 16 as being a healthy weight. Some seem to say that they are maybe 15 stone and a size 16 - I don't understand the parity between weight and dress size that some people have? Do they chose the smallest size they can fit into? Do they declare their dress size as being the largest item they need to buy? Could u please tell me how you judge it - for example - I am 5'4" - 11 stone - I am pear shaped (big bum but smaller waist) skirts I buy size 14 sometimes a 16, tops size 14 (hate anything tight only arms) but trousers always have to be a 16 (sometimes an 18) so they are not tight on my bum and then usually with a belt to stop the waist gaping. I therefore declare myself to be 11 stone and a size 16. - is that right? By BMI I am overweight so from that point not healthy but only a bit (!) so am going to be personal and ask what is your height and weight and what dress size would you declare yourself to be?

I think it really depends on your shape and how you wear your clothes.

I'm 5' 2", weight 7 stone 6 lbs, right on the bottom of acceptable BMI

Looking at others on here with those measurements they would seem to take an 8 - 10, but I'm definitely a 10-12. I do a lot of physical work, and my shoulders don't remotely fit in a size 8 top, while a size 8 bottom (and often a 10) doesn't fit on the hips.

SpringFollows · 24/04/2011 20:56

5 ft 5. 10 stone 12. I am usually midway between size 12 and size 14. Others on this thread are my height and wight and say they are size 16. i think the sizings are wrong. I have never been in a 16 in my life- even when pg. (Granted, I only shop at M&S and M and Co and that).

SpringFollows · 24/04/2011 21:01

actually- yes- just recalled when i went to fat face. I fit into nothing. Nothing at all. I slunk out.

The sizings are a little bizarre generally in shops.

CareyFakes · 24/04/2011 21:03

I dare not to step foot in Fat Face for I fear the irony would kill me.

I have a fat face

Blondilocks · 24/04/2011 21:08

5'4
about 9.5 stone
normally size 10-12, although some items in my wardrobe are size 8 (M&S) and some are size 14 (Jane Norman jeans) but still fit - so annoying that you need to take about 3 sizes in to try on sometimes!!

annapolly · 24/04/2011 21:08

weight 12 stone 13

Height 5ft 2.5

size 14.

I am a small dress size as I am a tiny person with size 4 feet and very small bones. I am much more over weight than my dress size would suggest.

WhipMeIndiana · 24/04/2011 21:10

5'9'' 12 stone size 14 is most flattering, if 14 trousers get tight I know to give up biscuits for a week Biscuit

DuelingFanjo · 24/04/2011 21:12

5ft 6
10 st 12
size14 trousers, size 12 tops and dresses.

I have big thighs.

Thinking on this, I don't think my hips will allow me to go into my previous size 10 trousers. My hips have just, well, expanded and whilst there is a bit of fat on there at the moment my actual bony hip size seems to have increased. My thighs though could slim down a lot.

Truthfully (and as motivation to me if you have) how many have got back to their pre-pg weight?

CareyFakes · 24/04/2011 21:18

Me, I'm less than I was before DD but I'm still Obese lol

bermudatriangle · 24/04/2011 21:22

I'm 5'3", weigh about 9 stone, and am a size 11- so a 10 or a 12 depending on the shop I'm in and the cut of the clothes.

yama · 24/04/2011 21:26

5ft 6
Size 10
Between 9.5 and 10 stone (guessing)

Blackcoffeeandcigarettes · 24/04/2011 21:33

Im 5"3 9 stone size 8

thetasigmamum · 24/04/2011 21:38

5'2"
7.5 stone
Size 6-8 in most shops except Gap/Banana republic where I'm a 1 which allegedly corresponds to a 4, Ithink (it's a load of rubbish though)

My stats are:

5'0"
39.5 kilos normally (6.2 stone).
Size 4/6/8 depending on the clothes shop. Most shops it's 6-8, next/monsoon/primark it's 4(well the 6 is too big).

But the best one was in Jane Norman a shop assistant looked me up and down declared I was fat and would struggle to get into a size 10!

DontCallMeBaby · 24/04/2011 23:18

springbokdoc I weigh 10lb less than my pre-pregnancy weight. DD is 7 though, so that is a long time ago ... I weigh less than I did when I got married 11.5 years ago, and would have to go back 15 years and a relationship break-up to be lighter. Virtual weigh-in further back up this thread though will reveal I still aint exactly wasting away. :o
